(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

June 5 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Midway, one of the greatest naval battles the world has ever witnessed and a critical turning point in the Pacific during World War II. Navy bands supported commemoration events around the world. We even sent musicians to Midway Atoll, where a bugler and vocalist from the U.S. Pacific Fleet Band participated in a globally-broadcast ceremony. Inspired by the “Greatest Generation,” our Sailors and civilians carry on that legacy of adaptation and resilience. Believe it or not, we’re already nearing the end of 2017. If you would like to learn more about Japanese culture, there are a great many books on the subject. This overview is simply meant to help make your life in Japan a little bit easier. The best way to learn proper Japanese manners is to mimic those around you. Etiquette While Eating Like every other country, Japan has specific etiquette for mealtimes. When out to eat with Japanese friends or coworkers it is important to be aware of what is considered rude. いただきます itadakimasu. After sitting down to a meal, and just before beginning to eat, many Japanese will put their hands together, much like how Christians pray, and say itadakimasu. It is not actually a prayer, however, and literally translates as “I humbly receive this.” When out at a restaurant, it is not uncommon for the meals to come out as they are prepared, which may mean that you get your food before your companions, or they will get theirs first. Do not be surprised if they tell you to start eating or begin eating when the food comes. This is just Japanese custom. Generally before digging in you should say something like おさきにすみません osaki ni sumimasen, which means, “excuse me for going first.” They may urge you to eat. If this makes you uncomfortable it is perfectly ok to explain that in your culture you wait until everyone gets their food before eating, but they will not think ill of you for starting without them. -

Within the walled and strongly-guarded city was a scene, strange and fantastic. The air, heavy with war rumours, was rent by the deafening strokes of enormous brazen tam-tams, mingling with the loud shouts of dark-faced Jalins, half-naked negro fanatics of the Kunjara and the Dinka, armed cap à pie, ready for battle at a moment’s notice. The excitement, which had increased daily for many months, had risen to fever heat. (2) Model and characterize a dendronized polymethacrylate carrying second generation chiral 4-aminoproline-based dendrons and a thiophene based dendronized polymer in order to explain, in basis of their structure, the extraordinary stiffness of the first and the great conductivity exhibited by the latter in previous experimental studies. (3) Study of the interactions of thiophene based conducting polymers. The interaction of these polymers with the solvent medium as well as their intermolecular interactions such as π-stacking interactions play a key role when designing new devices based on conducting polymers. (4) Exploit the intrinsic tubular geometry of natural motifs extracted from certain proteins together with the ability of π-conjugated systems to promote charge transfer to model a tubular electronic conductor based on natural peptide sequences by replacing natural amino acids by synthetic amino acids owning an aromatic side chain. (5) Study of the role played by the solvent molecules in the actuation mechanism in the molecular actuator poly(calix[4]arene bis-bithiophene) by the examination of the structure and dynamics of the dichloromethane solvent around the calix[4]arene units. (6) Investigation of the selectivity of a polythiophene functionalized with calix[4]arene nanosensor at the microscopic level which experimentally presents a great selectivity towards Na+ with respect to K+ and Li+ alkaline cations.
