vipersonality ABel Canto Life CHARLES STANTON

text by cheryl rose

From his perfect postureorhis graceful movements, your first assessment of Charles Stanton might be dancer. However, fromchildhood, Stanton knew what he would become: opera singer. His mother tells the story that when her children were small and were asked what theywanted to be when theygrewup, her daughters said “princess” and “astronaut.”Stanton’s replywas “opera singer.” He even dressed as an opera singer forhis Halloween costume several times. So when he got his big break in classical vocal performance, his mother simplysaid, “Of course.” Stanton, abaritone vocalist and production director, isthe impresario behind the nascent Opera Beaumont. The previous incarnation, Beaumont Civic Opera, has been defunct forabout ten years, but Stanton believesthat classical singing in a staged situation would be appealing to the community.Arelatively recent transplant, Stanton has an impressive recordofinitiating operatic companies in various commu- nities that continue to thrive. “I’mone of those people whojust says if youwant it to happen then just do it -- make it happen!”Stanton said. This blend of passion and confidence comes across clearlyinStanton, from his expressive features to his warm laugh. Though pursuing adoctorate in musical arts in vocal performance at the University of Houston and working as agrant writer fora nonprofit organization, Stanton sawavoid in the local arts options and knewhecould organize the initial steps to arenewedopera. “For better or worse, Ican saythat I am always passionate about everything Ido,”Stanton said. “I’ve always been the type of person wholikes to have lots of irons in the fireand things that fulfill the commu- nity.” Stanton grew up in the small town of Cherryville, N.C., as partofalarge fam- ily. Bit by the opera bug early, his first breakthrough opportunity came at 19,when he auditioned forarole with Opera Carolina in Charlotte. He was“discovered,”and soon had aNew York agent and, unlike most college students, wasjetting off foraudi- tions and national performances. Aturning point came when he movedtoGermanytoperform foranopera fes- tival. Foraseason and ahalf,Stanton “sang his face off”and livedasafull-time, professional singer.“Iadored singing, but I’mabig familyperson,”Stanton said. “I reallydidn’t want to be at such ahigh levelthat I’dhavetobegone all the time.” Soon Stanton wasbeing offered teaching positions, and through coaching young voices, found his love of directing. Though he still sings well and competitively,he also loveshis role as afacilitator forindividual performers and communities. “I have been fortunate to have adiversity of opportunities in singing, directing and teaching,”Stanton said. “I’ve lovedevery step of this journey. This is my profes- sion and my passion. Getting to this point in my career has allowedmetobalance afull lifewith apassion formusic. This is whereIlanded years ago and I’mfortu- nate to have been hereeversince.”
