1. Introduction

Panchkula is the northern most and smallest district of the State of . It was formed on the 15th of August 1995, carved out of the district of . Panchkula district has five , namely, Panchkula, Barwala, , , and Rani. Panchkula is a planned , and along with (in ) is a to the Union of . Collectively, the three are known as Chandigarh Tricity. The prestigious Headquarters of the Indian , is also located in Panchkula city. The only Hill station in Haryana called is also in this district.

2. Panchkula District at a Glance

Panchkula was newly formed as the 17th district of Haryana on 15th August 1995. It comprises two Sub Divisions, Panchkula and Kalka; three Tehsils named Panchkula, Kalka & , and two Sub Tehsils namely Morni and Barwala. It has four development Blocks namely Pinjore, Raipur Rani, Morni and Barwala. As per the 2011 census, Panchkula district has 236 out of which 12 villages are un-inhabited and 224 are inhabited villages. There are five towns in the district named Panchkula, Barwala, Pinjore, Kalka and Raipur Rani.

According to the 2011 census, the district has a total population of 561,293, of which 2,99,679 (53.4%) are males and 2,61,614 (46.6%) females. At 3,13,230, the urban population of Panchkula district constitutes 55.80% of the total population, and the remaining 2,48,063, or 44.20 % of the total population, if rural in nature. The total SC population of the district is 1,01,830 constituting 18.14 % of the total population. Literacy rates in the district stand at 72.21% or 4,05,318, of which, 229862 (56.71%) male are literate and 175456 (43.29%) females are literate.

2.1. Urban Estate Panchkula

The new urban estate of Panchkula is developed on outskirts west of Chandigarh, amongst the picturesque background of the Shivalik hills and the Ghaggar River. The areas of Shivalik Enclave and Manimajra are towards the Northwest of Panchkula Urban Estate. The Cantonment of Chandimandir is north of Panchkula urban estate, towards the Urban estate’s southern edge is in Punjab. The Chandigarh railway station is near the Chandigarh Panchkula boundary, and has an exit toward Panchkula. Most of the developed sectors are west of the Ghaggar river. The highway cuts through the estate mostly parallel to the Ghaggar. The has been sub-divided into residential

District Profile of Panchkula 4 sectors, industrial sectors, parks and areas for regional recreation, major institutions, markets, and government and semi-government offices. The Eastern sectors are on the edge of Ramgarh, through which a road runs south to in Punjab via Mubarakpur. East of Ramgarh on the road to (in ) is Barwala where an industrial estate has been set up and Raipur Rani where Sabeer Bhatia is proposing to set up a Nano city. The road to - Paonta- goes through these towns. Short of Raipur Rani is a turn that goes to Dosarka between Ambala and .

A large area south of Old Panchkula between Ambala-Kalka national highway and the Ghaggar River has been developed for recreation. The area has a Golf Course, and a Sports Complex named Tau Lal Sports Complex. Tau Sports Complex has been popular due to the ICL Cricket Tournaments here.

North of Chandimandir are hills and Pinjore as well as Kalka, due west of Pinjore is the industrial area of Baddi. HMT factory is in Pinjore and An ancillary industrial estate of HMT with built-up sheds has been established. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL-A government of Enterprise) was set up on approximately 23 hectares of land in Panchkula Industrial Area and today employs a large work force.

Urban estate Panchkula has 3 phases so far

Phase I: Sectors 1 through to 19, and Industrial area is shaped like a large triangle, with the railway line being one side of the triangle and the Zirakpur Kalka road being another. The Industrial area is largely along the railway line. All the prime sectors and a well developed market encompasses this triangle.

Phase 2: Sectors 20 through to 30 has some sectors across the Zirakpur-Kalka road and many on both sides of the banks of the Ghagghar

Phase 3: These are the newly announced sectors beyond Ramgarh, to the east of the existing sectors.

2.2. Weather

Panchkula district has a sub tropical continental climate where the seasons are, hot summer, cool winter, good monsoon rainfall and great variation in temperature (0 °C to 43 °C). In winter frost sometimes occurs during December and January. The district also receives winter rains from the western disturbance. The rainfall is mostly received in the monsoon. Morni hills constitute the highest point of the district as well as of Haryana.

Hindi and Punjabi are the main spoken languages in Panchkula. Panchkula attracts many Haryanvis residents, by virtue of the many department headquarters situated in the city, because of which the is widely spoken and understood here. English is also prevalent.
