The curtain is set to go up on one of Melbourne’s most-loved charity events, albeit a little differently. Sacred Heart Mission’s 13th annual Heart of St Kilda Concert, its annual fundraiser for the Meals Program, will take place as a live stream concert on Wednesday, 2 December from its spiritual home, the Palais Theatre. SHM will present the concert in a new format, resulting in an exciting and totally unique line up. International, interstate and local artists will perform exclusively for us this year and audiences can tune in globally, supporting those in Melbourne experiencing homelessness, social isolation and disadvantage. Hosted by Brian Nankervis live from the Palais and streamed into the comfort of your home, the Heart of St Kilda Concert offers a stunning line-up of Australian and international musicians and comedians. “The 13th annual Heart of St Kilda Concert in 2020 promises to be totally unique! I’ve been part of this wonderful celebration of music, comedy and the Mission’s important work in and around St Kilda from the beginning,” Brian says. “I’m excited to say that the response to the concert this year has been exceptional – aside from featuring artists that we’ve been chasing since the first concert back in 2008 – The Living End, Missy Higgins, Jimmy Barnes – it’s brilliant to see that this year’s livestream event has attracted some of the biggest names in the business. “They’ll be recording songs and special messages in home studios all over the world! All for Sacred Heart Mission and those we support. Since 2002 the line up consists of Chris Cheney (vocals, guitar), Scott Owen (double bass, vocals) and Andy Strachan (drums). The band rose to fame in 1997 after the release of their double A- sided single, "Second Solution" / "Prisoner of Society", which peaked at No. 4 on the Australian Singles Chart and went on to sell triple platinum. They have released seven studio albums and two reached the No. 1 spot on the Australian Albums Chart: self-titled album (12 October 1998) and State of Emergency (4 February 2006). They have also gained chart success in the United States and United Kingdom. At ARIA Music Awards (Aus Grammys) ceremonies they have been nominated 27 times and have won six awards. The band have won an APRA Award (Aus version of Ivor Novello Awards) for Song of the Year in 2009. The band’s frontman, Chris Cheney is the only Australian musician to have a Gretsch guitar made specifically for him, and the company even made a limited edition for sale. MISSY HIGGINS Australian singer/songwriter Missy Higgins has enjoyed phenomenal success with her irresistible melodies and ‘arrow through the heart’ lyrics, delivered by a striking voice that clearly means it. After touring the globe with her undeniable songs and unforgettable live performances, Missy’s highly acclaimed ‘The Sound Of White’ (ARIA Album Of The Year featuring the hits ‘Scar’, ’Ten Days’ and ’The Special Two’), ‘On A Clear Night’ (featuring North American top 20 airplay hit ‘Where I Stood’ plus Australian #1 single ‘Steer’) and ‘The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle’ (featuring ‘Everyone’s Waiting’ and ‘Hello Hello’) have sold over two millions copies globally. Missy capped off the year with the release of standalone single ‘When The Machine Starts’. KEV CARMODY was born in Cairns in 1946 to an Irish-Australian father and Aboriginal mother. His maternal heritage is the Bundjalung country in New South Wales which is the Ballina/Byron Bay/Cabbage Tree Island. His indigenous grandfather was a Lama Lama man from Cape York. Carmody’s father did rural work and the family lived on a block they rented from the Government on the Western Darling Downs. Carmody did not learn to read and write until he was sent to school in Toowoomba at 10 but a world of the imagination was already alive to him, in the land and the sky, or listening to the wireless with an aerial run up a gum tree out on the stock route. A new audience was alerted to Carmody through the 2007 album Cannot Buy My Soul, produced by Paul Kelly, with versions of his songs by artists including Bernard Fanning, Missy Higgins, Troy Cassar- Daley and Archie Roach plus Carmody’s own performances. The album has been refreshed for this 2020 edition, produced by Sian Darling, with the original 32 tracks and six new versions of his songs. Carmody was 22 when he wrote the words to I’ve Been Moved. Aboriginal people had only won the right to be counted in the national census through a referendum the year before, in 1967. He carried the poem around with him for years before setting it to music but in I’ve Been Moved he already had shown the strong foundation for his music: the clarity, the imagery, the truth. BILLY BRAGG has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for over 35 years. Honoured with the PRS Outstanding Contribution to British Music award at the Ivor Novello awards in May 2018, he is regarded a valuable statesman and activist. Highlights among the former Saturday boy’s albums are his punk-charged debut Life’s a Riot with Spy Vs Spy, the more love-infused Workers Playtime, pop classic Don’t Try This at Home, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee-timed treatise on national identity England, Half-English, his stripped-down tenth, Tooth and Nail – his most successful since the early 90s – and Shine a Light: Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad with Joe Henry. The intervening three-and-a-half-plus decades have been marked by numerous milestones, including a number one hit single, having a street named after him, meeting the Queen, being the subject of a South Bank Show, appearing onstage at Wembley Stadium, curating Leftfield at Glastonbury, and once sharing spotted dick with a Cabinet minister in the House of Commons cafeteria. Earning a mention in Bob Dylan’s memoir, he is the author of three non-fiction books, the second of which, Roots, Radicals & Rockers, was shortlisted for the Penderyn Music Book award and fed into a BBC4 documentary about the skiffle classic Rock Island Line. His most recent book, The Three Dimensions of Freedom, argues that liberty needs to be tempered by equality and accountability.     JEN CLOHER Jen Cloher Album Biography: June 6, 2017 Album Release: August 11, 2017 “It’s self-titled.” The three-word answer is all that Jen Cloher requires to describe her new album, a letter in triplicate addressed to music, to Australia and to love. It’s the most honest album she’s ever written. Jen liKes best to tell the truth. Jen Cloher is the culmination of a period of artistic and personal growth in which the artist tooK her rightful place as the punk-rocK figurehead of Melbourne’s famous DIY music scene. The NIDA graduate is an outspoKen advocate for artist rights, a label boss and band-leader, she also happens to be the partner of acclaimed songwriter Courtney Barnett. Cloher’s fascinating life-story is enough justification to taKe notice here, but it’s the music that will have you returning to this album again and again. Cloher says: “It’s a classic rocK album, recorded live in one room with minimal overdubs… I’m not too good at going into descriptive language around my own music but I suppose it is intimate without ever feeling too precious.” The bulK of Cloher’s album was recorded in October 2016 by Greg WalKer amidst the rolling greenery of Jumbunna in Victoria’s Gippsland, these are songs of distance and songs of driving. Four years on, the band that first played together on Cloher’s acclaimed third album, the Australian Music Prize nominated In Blood Memory, are bold and assured. The songs are split here and there by the melodic intricacy of guitarist Courtney Barnett while drummer Jen Sholakis and bassist Bones Sloane add weight and space, playing only what is needed, leaving room for the songs to breathe, transform and soar.

They can give us justice for the past and hope for the future. The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria will be our voice as we work towards Treaties. The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria will be set up this year, with its first meeting set to be held in December. The Assembly will be a powerful, independent and culturally strong organisation made up of 32 Victorian Traditional Owners. If you’re a Victorian Traditional Owner or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person living in Victoria, you’re eligible to vote for your Assembly representatives through a historic election process. Your voice matters, your vote is crucial. HAVE YOU ENROLLED TO VOTE? To be able to vote, you’ll need to make sure you’re enrolled. This will only take you a few minutes. You can do this at the same time as voting, or before you vote. The Assembly election is completely Aboriginal owned and independent from any Government election (this includes the Victorian Electoral Commission and the Australian Electoral Commission). This means, even if you vote every year in other elections, you’ll still need to sign up to vote for your Assembly representatives. Don’t worry, your details will never be shared with Government, or any electoral commissions and you won’t get fined if you decide not to vote.
