Automated airport check-in: developing an agent-based model Cláudio Miguel Costa Esteves Dissertation to obtain the Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering Supervisors: Dr. Vasco Domingos Moreira Lopes Miranda dos Reis Dr. Maria do Rosário Maurício Ribeiro Macário Examination Committee Chairperson: Dr. Nuno Gonçalo Cordeiro Marques de Almeida Supervisor: Dr. Vasco Domingos Moreira Lopes Miranda dos Reis Members of Committee: Dr. Carlos Paulo Novais Oliveira da Silva Cruz : Dr. Amílcar José Martins Arantes March 2018 Acknowledgments I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my principle supervisor doctor Vasco Reis for his insightful comments and guidance throughout this research project. Without his encouragement and valuable advice this project would not have reached its best. Thanks to all my colleagues who also gave me advice and support. I am most grateful to Mariana and João for supporting me in this research project and helping me with difficulties during my research. Express my gratitude to Liliana and Duarte for helping me with difficulties in programming and bringing new insights to this research. A special thanks to my family for supporting me financially and to always encourage me to become an engineer. One final thanks, once more, to my everyone involved for all their love and encouragement. I am most grateful to all of you. Thank you! i ii Abstract Need for airports to improve capacity by optimizing spaces and the need for airline carriers to bring down their operational costs creates the opportunity of increasing the use of self-service technologies at the passenger check-in process. Developments such as kiosks alongside automatic baggage drop-off are gaining ground in the short-term.

Gerasimov AIR TRANSPORT IN RUSSIA AND ITS IMPACT ON THE ECONOMY The study aims to collect and analyse statistics of Russian air transport, show the in- fluence of air transport on the national economy over the period from 2007 to 2016, compare the sector’s role in Russia with the one in other countries. The study reveals the significance of air transport for Russian economy by comparing airlines’ and air- ports’ monetary output to the gross domestic product. On the basis of the research, the policies in the aviation sector can be adjusted by government authorities. Ключевые слова: Russia, aviation, GDP, economic impact, air transport, statistics. Introduction According to Air Transport Action Group, the air transport industry supports 62.7 million jobs globally and aviation’s total global economic impact is $2.7 trillion (approximately 3.5% of the Gross World Product) [1]. Aviation transported 4 billion passengers in 2017, which is more than a half of world population, according to the International Civil Aviation Organization [2]. It makes the industry one of the most important ones in the world. It has a consid- erable effect on national economies by providing a huge number of employment opportunities both directly and indirectly in such spheres as tourism, retail, manufacturing, agriculture, and so on. Air transport is a driving force behind economic connection between different regions because it may entail economic, political, and social effects.

  • Desind Finding
NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE ARCHIVES Herbert Stephen Desind Collection Accession No. 1997-0014 NASM 9A00657 National Air and Space Museum Smithsonian Institution Washington, DC Brian D. Nicklas © Smithsonian Institution, 2003 NASM Archives Desind Collection 1997-0014 Herbert Stephen Desind Collection 109 Cubic Feet, 305 Boxes Biographical Note Herbert Stephen Desind was a Washington, DC area native born on January 15, 1945, raised in Silver Spring, Maryland and educated at the University of Maryland. He obtained his BA degree in Communications at Maryland in 1967, and began working in the local public schools as a science teacher. At the time of his death, in October 1992, he was a high school teacher and a freelance writer/lecturer on spaceflight. Desind also was an avid model rocketeer, specializing in using the Estes Cineroc, a model rocket with an 8mm movie camera mounted in the nose. To many members of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), he was known as “Mr. Cineroc.” His extensive requests worldwide for information and photographs of rocketry programs even led to a visit from FBI agents who asked him about the nature of his activities. Mr. Desind used the collection to support his writings in NAR publications, and his building scale model rockets for NAR competitions. Desind also used the material in the classroom, and in promoting model rocket clubs to foster an interest in spaceflight among his students. Desind entered the NASA Teacher in Space program in 1985, but it is not clear how far along his submission rose in the selection process. He was not a semi-finalist, although he had a strong application.
