Introduction

As we prep3re to celebrate the Centennial of Kansas Statehood next year, we are becoming more concerned with our historical roots than we have been evsr before. We suddenly want to catch up with the past, learn by studying it, and preserve what we can of it for posterity.

The map in this pamphlet shows the routes of the m3jor trails across Kansas as well as some of the sites that played an important role in the early history. They form the foundation of the develop ment of our state.

By the same token, no literature is more engrossing than that about Kansas. The reading listed here has been compiled with the belief that the pride of any Kansan will be intensified as he reads of his Kansas heritage, whether it be native or adopted.

Public libraries may wish to devise a reading program for their patrons, based upon this map and the books listed. These books are only suggestions, however. You will know of others. Those included are limited to books dealing with Kansas and Kansans and covering the period from Coronado through the nineteenth century. There are four categories in the booklist: adult non-fiction, adult fiction, non-fiction for younger readers, and fiction for younger readers. These are arbitrary library categories, which should never be "fences" to an interested reader.

Most of the books are entirely about Kansas. Some deal with more than Kansas, but give vital background to the total picture. Several of the books are not easily purchased anymore and many Kan sas libraries would be happy to receive a "homeless" copy as a gift. Most of the books are available for purchase through regular pub lishing channels. Since many Kansas libraries are building a special collection of Kansas books, the biggest portion of these titles can be borrowed within the state.

Along with reading about Kansas, you may wish to visit sites highlighted on this map. Each location has original or reconstructed landmarks for you to see todaye Many of the books on this list tell about these landmarks in detail and lead you to more.

It is our hope this list will be a start on the present-day trail to many hours of conversation about Kansas history and many years of deepening pride in the beginnings of our state. We feel that any person who delves into the early cannot possibly resist becoming an avid booster! 1
