Abstract This dissertation investigates the genre of autofiction, which has traditionally been understood either as a hybrid, that merges autobiography and novel, or as a postmodern autobiography. While these theoretical lines have supported the ambiguity of genre based on the nominal identity as well as the presence of shared autobiographical elements between author, narrator and protagonist, this dissertation proposes autofiction as a fictional genre and tries to identify the strategies used within autofiction to establish itself as a fiction that does not depend on degrees of factuality/fictionality, but rather on verisimilitude.
