For many years it seemed that Europeans lived on a continent of shared values and a common destiny. No one paid attention to the alarm bells warning of growing divisions across the continent, which have become more insistent since the economic and social crisis. Europe and We need to talk its values, previously taken for granted, are now being contested. These clouds are casting a shadow across Europe’s future, and old demons, long dormant, have started to raise their voices again. about Europe With a deepening values divide there is an urgent need for public debate and a reconsideration of how Europeans can strengthen the European project. Is a “Europe united in diversity” still feasible? Can a consensus be forged on a set of values pertaining to a common European identity? What should be done to preserve European unity? The Council of Europe, with its membership covering Europe from Vladivostok to Lisbon and from Reykjavik to Ankara, and its mission to promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law, provides an excellent framework for discuss- ing the current state of thinking and dynamics behind the concept of European identity. For these reasons, the Council of Europe, together with the École nationale d’administration in Strasbourg, held a series of European Identity Debates fea- turing eminent personalities from a variety of backgrounds including politics, civil society, academia and the humanities. • America's Sweethearts
America's Sweethearts Dir: Joe Roth, 2001 A review by A. Mary Murphy, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada The whole idea of America's Sweethearts is to have a little fun with the industry of film stars' lives, and the fact that their marriages, breakdowns and breakups have become an entertainment medium of their own. Further to this is the fact that not only does the consumer buy the product of stars' off-screen lives, but so (at times) do stars. Of course, part of the fun of this film is that it just happens to be populated by some very large careers, which makes for good box-office (and ironic) appeal -- with Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Billy Crystal, and John Cusack as the front-line members of the cast. Everyone should be thoroughly convinced by now that Julia Roberts was born to play romantic comedy. Those liquid eyes and that blazing smile go directly to an audience's collective heart, and make it leap or ache as required. On the occasions when she steps out of her generic specialty, it's just an embarrassment (for example Mary Reilly [1996]); and reminds us that she is not a great dramatic actor -- the Academy Award notwithstanding. However, when Roberts stays within her limits, and does what she is undeniably talented at doing, there's nobody better. She's not the only big-name actress in America's Sweethearts, so she doesn't get all the screen time she's accustomed to, but she makes good use of her allotment. However, there are a couple of problems with the premise for her character, Kiki.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Waterloo Library Journal Publishing Service (University of Waterloo, Canada) Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Art of Film By Tadeusz Miczka Spring 1997 Issue of KINEMA ”WE LIVE IN THE WORLD LACKING IDEA ON ITSELF: KRZYSZTOF KIEŚLOWSKI’s ART OF FILM” OUR ”little stabilization” -- this ironic phrase by Tadeusz Różewicz, the poet and playwright, rightly charac- terized the low living standards of Poles and the state of apathy of the society in the 1960s. It also reflected well the situation of the Polish culture which, at that time, was put under strong political pressure and, except for very few instances, half- truths and newspeak replaced the clear dichotomy of truth and falsity. However, it finds its strongest expression if seen against the background of the Polish cinema ofthattime, since the cinema was, so to say, the ”light in the eyes” of the Workers’ Party activists devoutly building the ’real socialism’ state. After the period of the political thaw which, among other things, brought to life artistically courageous works of the ’Polish film school’, the political authorities again demanded to be the only power shaping people’s opinions and their style of life in the country. The film art could meet viewers’ needs only to a very small extent. Its major task however, was to shape those needs and that is why cinema was part of the mechanism used for indoctrinating the society. Very few film directors were able to liberate themselves from the rigid ideological rules and fight the censorship efficiently.

Throughout the years behind the Iron Curtain Polish filmmakers proved many times that despite the isolation they were still the citizens of the world, who significantly contributed to the discussion of its condition through their output. Today their films are an important part of Polish culture. For years, they have been shaping our national identity, raising important existential questions, and uniting us around certain values. They have also brought on the social, political and moral changes and encouraged us to act. We owe them successes at international film festivals as well as rendering the Polish school of cinematographers famous. Polish films have many admirers around the world and thanks to the digital restoration the spectators can watch the most acclaimed ones in their best quality on HD TV, in cinemas as well as on DVDs and Blu-rays. 3 DIGITALLY RESTORED of POLISH CINEMA MASTERPIECES of POLISH CINEMA CLASSICS Antczak Jerzy 12 The Lady of the Camellias / Dama Kameliowa 13 Nights and Days / Noce i dnie Bajon Filip 14 Aria for an Athlete / Aria dla atlety Bareja Stanisław 15 A Bunet Will Call / Brunet wieczorową porą 16 Teddy Bear / Miś 17 There’s No Place Like Home / Nie ma róży bez ognia 18 Wanted: Male or Female / Poszukiwany, poszukiwana 19 What Can You Do to Me If You Catch Me / Co mi zrobisz, jak mnie złapiesz DIGITALLY RESTORED

JYVÄSKYLÄ STUDIES IN HUMANITIES 37 Kaisa Hiltunen Images of Time, Thought and Emotions Narration and the Spectator´s Experience in Krzysztof Kieslovski´s´ Late Fiction Films JYVÄSKYLÄN YLIOPISTO ´ ´ ´ Copyright © , by University of Jyväskylä ABSTRACT Hiltunen, Kaisa Images of time, thought and emotions: narration and the spectator’s experience in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s late fiction films Jyväskylä: University of Jyväskylä, 2005, 203 p. (Jyväskylä Studies in Humanities ISSN 1459-4331; 37) ISBN 951-39-2119-0 Summary Diss. The thesis deals with narration and style in and the spectator’s experience of the late fiction films of the Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski. It analyses A Short Film About Killing (1988), A Short Film About Love (1988), the television series The Decalogue (1988/89), The Double Life of Véronique (1991), and The Three Colours trilogy (1993/94). The earlier documentary and fiction films are discussed briefly to establish a stylistic and thematic continuity between the socially conscious early films directed when Kieślowski worked in the national Polish film industry and the late art films made as European co-productions. The narratives of these films are examined on the one hand as structures and on the other as processes, paying special attention to the spectator’s experience and understanding of them. Narration is analysed as a process taking place between the spectator and a film. Phenomenological approaches and cognitive film theory provide the theoretical framework for the study. A central question is how time is organised in Kieślowski’s narratives and how it is connected with their meanings and the representation of their protagonists’ inner lives.

  • 1 Joanna Bardzińska Kieślowski in Spain
Joanna Bardzińska Kieślowski in Spain: History, Reception and Inspiration The films of Krzysztof Kieślowski arrived in Spain comparatively late, and when they did, this was mainly due to the Film Festivals at San Sebastian and Valladolid, as well as with facilitation by independent producers. In 1988, A Short Film About Love (Krótki film o miłości, 1988), under the Spanish title No Amarás, was presented in the San Sebastian Festival’s main competition, winning the Jury’s Special Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize. While the still-fresh triumph of A Short Film About Killing (Krótki film o zabijaniu, 1987, prem. 1988) at Cannes must have echoed throughout the Spanish press, it was only the second Dekalog film and its release in cinemas that first revealed the cinematographic world of the Polish director to the Spanish public and film critics. The author of one contemporary review, Eduardo Rodriguez Merchán, admitted outright that: “Krzysztof Kieślowski is almost unknown to the Spanish public, even though he is currently one of the most prominent Polish Directors”.[1] The same reviewer, writing in 2015, refers back to this comment, admitting that: “today I have come back to the review I wrote then (of A Short Film About Love) and almost cannot believe the ignorance of the critics then – myself included – when it came to the Polish Director”.[2] Admittedly, this is indeed hard to imagine today, especially considering that Kieślowski is among the Polish Directors best known to the average Spaniard. The numerous events and film screenings which took place in Spain in 2016 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the artist’s death serve as the most incontrovertible proof that, as a Polish filmmaker, Kieślowski’s fame and recognition in the homeland of Buñuel remains unparalleled.
