COUNT FLEET took the lead out of the gate, but then settled in comfortably in the top 3 until the stretch run when he made a late charge to win by one length pulling away. CITATION got off a bit slow out of the gate, but took the lead around the first turn and kept it, but by never more than 0.75 length. He faded down the stretch and had to settle for second. WHIRLAWAY also started slow, but joined the fray around the first turn. He charged along the rail to capture 3rd by a head. GALLANT FOX took an early lead but then settled into the top 5 fray and ended up fourth. SEATTLE SLEW was competitive all race but never challenged for the lead and took fifth place. SIR BARTON languished in the back of the pack until the final turn and then made a good charge to take sixth place by a head over the competitive SECRETARIAT who finished seventh. WAR ADMIRAL WAS competitive through the backstretch but then faded badly around the final turn ending up 12th.
