Band/2003, 239–255 © 2003 by Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien ANGELIKI LYMBEROPOULOU / BIRMINGHAM THE MADRE DELLA CONSOLAZIONE ICON IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM: POST-BYZANTINE PAINTING, PAINTERS AND SOCIETY ON CRETE* With two plates A small portable icon (350 × 270 mm), now in the British Museum, Department of Medieval and Later Antiquities (reg. No. 1994, 1–2, 6), depicts the Virgin and Child (fig. 1). It is painted on a single panel of pine wood, apparently without fabric between the ground and wood support. The icon was bequeathed by Guy Holford Dixon JP, who bought it from the Temple Gallery. A label on the back, attached when the icon was in the possession of the Temple Gallery, describes it as being Russian of the six- teenth century. In a preliminary Museum catalogue, however, the origin was given as Italy or Crete and the date as seventeenth century.1 The truth about the origin and the dating of the icon, as we shall see, lies in the mid- dle: I will argue that it is from Crete and of the sixteenth century. The Virgin is depicted half-length, holding the Christ-Child in her right arm while touching His left leg gently with her left hand. Her head is tilted towards the Child, although she does not look at Him. She wears a green garment and a purple maphorion on top, which bears pseudo-kufic decoration on the edges; decorative motives are also visible on the gar- ment’s collar and left sleeve. The maphorion is held together in front of the Virgin’s chest with a golden brooch, which apparently used to have decora- tion, now lost.

Marco in Rome: 'You then do me the pleasure of sending me the news of Batoni's indulgence about the small sketches. ."' One wonders what Raphael Mengs, just finishing his Villa Albani ceiling, thought of Tiepolo's sketches. Three decades younger than Tiepolo, Mengs was now a famous painter whose opinion would have carried weight. Both Batoni (1708-1787) and Mengs were favored by the new Venetian pope, Clement XIII (whom they painted in 1760 and 1758 respectively), and by this pope's dis tinguished family; also, both artists at least indirectly can be connected with the Venetian church in Rome, S.

  • “Mary Has Filled Me with Amazement That She Gave Milk to the One Who Feeds the Multitudes”: Notes on the Byzantine Iconography of Maria Galaktotrophousa
IKONOTHEKA 27, 2017 Małgorzata Smorąg-Różycka The JaGiellonian universiTy “Mary has filled me with amazement that she gave milk to the One who feeds the multitudes”: Notes on the Byzantine Iconography of Maria Galaktotrophousa From 23 June to 9 October 2016 the National Museum in Cracow hosted an exhibi- tion entitled Maria Mater Misericordiae, which was organised to celebrate World Youth Day in Cracow (26–31 July 2016).1 The exhibition consisted of paintings and sculptures showing various depictions of the Virgin Mary that had been popular in European art in the period from the 12th to the 18th century. They were arranged in six thematic groups, of which the largest, twenty-six paintings, comprised represen- tations of the Virgin Mary breastfeeding the Christ Child. Representations of Virgo lactans, the Nursing Virgin, were not among the principal Marian images, but they were nevertheless popular throughout Europe. This beautiful and suggestive image of motherly tenderness must have spoken to the pious imagination of believers, who may have found it an echo of the most moving lines of poetry dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The iconographic formula, formerly considered to have originated in Egyptian images of Isis breastfeeding the infant Horus, is currently associated mainly with Italian art, in which it was present from the 12th century onwards. In general, however, Byzantine elements of the style and iconography of many early Italian representations have prompted questions as to the possible Byzantine origin of this image – the issue remains a topic of scholarly investigation. All that seems certain at the current stage of research is that images of the Nursing Virgin gained consider- able popularity in the post-Byzantine icon painting of the Cretan school, chiefly in the circle of Andreas Ritzos (1421 to before 1503), as well as in the Italo-Byzantine circles in Italy.

In this unprecedented time of global pandemic and lockdown, our own movement has been so drastically curtailed, aeroplanes are grounded, galleries have been closed and art can no longer be physically shared, the question of whether art is beyond borders is more important than ever. For this ninth issue of re•bus, ‘Mobility, Movement and Medium: Crossing Borders in Art’, the editorial team has put together four articles which explore themes of mobility, movement and borders from varying perspectives of media, place and time. Drawings, paintings, installations and the human body itself are examined in terms of how they cross borders physically, sociologically and even politically. The chronological sweep of this issue takes us from the Early Modern era through the seventeenth century, the 1970s and right up to the present day, whilst the geographical range is no less wide, encompassing the Adriatic, Bavaria, South Korea and Paris.
