Hitchcock, Systematic Agrostologist of the United States Department of Agriculture, u entitled Types of American grasses: a study of the American species of grasses described by Linnaeus, Gronovius, Sloane, Swartz, and Michaux," is an important contribution to our knowledge of American grasses. It is regarded as of fundamental importance in the critical sys- tematic investigation of any group of plants that the identity of the species described by earlier authors be determined with certainty. Often this identification can be made only by examining the type specimen, the original description being inconclusive. Under the American code of botanical nomenclature, which has been followed by the author of this paper, "the nomenclatorial t}rpe of a species or subspecies is the specimen to which the describer originally applied the name in publication." The procedure indicated by the American code, namely, to appeal to the type specimen when the original description is insufficient to identify the species, has been much misunderstood by European botanists. It has been taken to mean, in the case of the Linnsean herbarium, for example, that a specimen in that herbarium bearing the same name as a species described by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum must be taken as the type of that species regardless of all other considerations. -

The following list of grasses, based entirely upon specimens in the United States National Herbarium, is a preliminary paper, in which the scattered data upon Mexican grasses have been brought together and arranged in a convenient form. The species included have been accepted, for the most part, in their traditional sense. It has been impracticable to examine the types of many of the earlier described species since these specimens are located in European herbaria. For this reason the synonymy has been confined mostly to those names that could be fixed by an examination of American types, or concerning the application of which there was little doubt. The largest number of unidentified names are found in Fournier's work on Mexican grasses.1 This results from the incomplete or unsatis- factory descriptions and from the fact that the specimens cited under a given species either may not agree with the diagnosis, or may belong to two or more species, at least in different herbaria. An examination of the original specimens will undoubtedly lead to the identification of the greater part of these names. There are several specimens that have been omitted from the list because they have not been identified and are apparently unde- scribed species. They belong to genera, however, that are much in need of critical revision and further study of them is deferred for the present. In subsequent articles it is hoped to work out the classifi- cation of the tropical American grasses upon a type basis KEY TO THE GENEBA. -

Bhullar Department of Agronomy, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab 141 004 Received: 27 September 2017; Revised: 8 November 2017 ABSTRACT Wrinkle grass (Ischaemum rugosum Salisb.) is a highly competitive weed in rice production that can cause huge yield reductions. Information on germination ecology of this weed is essential for the development of effective integrated weed management systems. No information is available on germination ecology for populations of this weed from Indo-Gangetic plain region of India. This study was conducted to generate information on effects of major environmental factors, viz. light, temperature, burial depth, moisture, salinity and pH on germination/emergence of this weed. Seed germination was independent of light and more than 50% germination was recorded under a wide temperature range of 20/ 10 to 35/25 °C day/night (12/12 h). Maximum emergence was observed when seeds were placed on surface or buried up to 1 cm; but considerable emergence was also observed from deeper soil layers (up to 6 cm depth). Germination was above 75% at 160 mM but completely inhibited at 320 mM of NaCl. Germination was sensitive to moisture stress and was completely inhibited at water potential of -0.8 MPa. • THE NORTH AMERICA.N SPECIES OF ISACHNE. By A. S. HITCHCOCK. INTRODUCTION. This tropical genus of grasses is, in technical characters, anomalous in the tribe Paniceae, to which it belongs, in that the spikelet has two fertile florets instead of one. That is, throughout the tribe, with the exception of lsachne, the spikelet has one terminal fertile . floret and one sterile floret, this consisting of a lemma only, of a lemma and palea, or of a lemma, palea, and a staminate flower. In lsachne the lateral floret contains a perfect flower and normally develops a seed. There are seven species in North America, a few more in South America, and several in the tropics of the Old World. DESCRIPTION OF THE GENUS ANll SPECIES. • ISAClDIE R. Br. Isackru R. Dr. Prodr. Fl. Space and Tim Flynn 1 The Government of Niue requested assistance from the US Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry, to conduct a survey of invasive plant species of environmental concern, similar to surveys previously conducted in Micronesia and American Samoa. The survey was carried out from 15-19 May 2000. The objectives, as with previous surveys, were to: (1) identify plant species that are presently causing problems to natural and semi-natural ecosystems; (2) identify species that, even though they are not presently a major problem, could spread more widely or are known to be problem species elsewhere; (3) confirm the absence of species that are a problem elsewhere and, if introduced to Niue, could be a threat there; and (4) make appropriate recommendations. During our visit local experts2 showed us sites of known infestations. We also had available copies of botanical surveys conducted in the past (see Appendix 1, References). A visit of such short duration does not permit an exhaustive survey of the weed flora of the island. However, the intent was only to conduct an overall survey. Additional surveys of individual species or sensitive areas can and should be conducted as needed. This report summarizes our findings and makes some suggestions for further action. -

Of 134 exotic weeds, 25 were classified as invasive species and the number of invasive species ranged from 8 to 15 per park. An assessment of the risk of invasive species was made for three national parks based on an invasive species assessment protocol.
