ABSTRACT The semiarid region of northeastern Brazil possesses a set of wetlands characterized by hydrographic basins with deficient drainage networks, a few large and permanent lotic systems and several permanent and temporary lagoons. Aquatic plants are widely distributed in these wetlands and the present study aims to determine if those of Ceará state have similar species compositions and differences in species richness. We hypothesized that lentic ecosystems would have more species and different growth forms of aquatic angiosperms than lotic ecosystems. A total of 1619 records of aquatic angiosperms in 43 wetland areas were analysed. The most representative families were Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Fabaceae, Alismataceae, Malvaceae, Nymphaeaceae and Pontederiaceae. Most of the species are helophytes and bottom-rooted emergent hydrophytes. Permanent lentic ecosystems had the highest number of exclusive species (27.85 %), followed by temporary lentic ecosystems (20.54 %). Contrary to our hypothesis, the different aquatic ecosystems were found to possess distinct species compositions and different proportions of growth forms, and all wetland types contributed to the macrophyte richness of the study area, although they differ in species richness. Therefore, conservation plans for the native aquatic macrophyte biota should include all wetland ecosystems in the semiarid state of Ceará. Sampling was carried out at flood in three types of aquatic vegetation, (wild-rice, floating meadow and Polygonum bank) in anabranch Bonfim (lotic) and in lake Mandioré (lentic) in plots along transects, to estimate the percent coverage and record life forms of species. We collected 59 species in 50 genera and 28 families. -

For full information and resources visit www.nms.ac.uk/pacific The following material culture styles have particularly distinctive elements but broad collections are not commonly found in Scottish museums. Hawaiian Islands The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of volcanic origin located in north east Polynesia. There are eight main islands as well as smaller islands, atolls and islets. The largest island is Hawai’i. The other main inhabited islands are: O’ahu, Maui, Kaua’i, Moloka’i, Lana’i, Ni’hau, and Kaho’olawe. The islands were first settled in 1,300 from the south, most likely the Society Islands. The distance from other parts of Polynesia meant that Hawaiians developed distinctive forms of chieftainship, religious practices and material culture. The first European recorded to have visited the Hawaiian Islands was Captain James Cook in early 1778 on his third voyage, who named the archipelago the Sandwich Islands after his patron the Earl of Sandwich. Cook met his death there in February 1779. Kamehameha, who was a late 18th century Chief on the island of Hawai’i, attempted to gain control over the whole island group. By 1810 he had established a monarchy which ruled for most of the 19th century. At this time the Hawaiian Islands were recognised by foreign powers as a sovereign nation. Kamehameha’s son Liholiho (Kamehameha II) and Queen Kamamalu visited London on a state visit to George IV where they tragically died in 1824 after contracting measles. -

Each of these entities includes very different territories, with different legal statuses and varying forms of self-administration and constitutional linkages with the UK. However, they also share similarities and challenges that enable an analysis of these territories as a complete set. The incomplete sovereignty of the Crown Dependencies and BOTs has entailed that all these territories (except Gibraltar) have not been allowed to participate in the 2016 Brexit referendum or in the withdrawal negotiations with the EU. Moreover, it is reasonable to assume that Brexit is not an exceptional situation. In the future there will be more and more relevant international issues for these territories which will remain outside of their direct control, but will have a direct impact on them. Thus, if no adjustments are made to their statuses, these territories will have to keep trusting that the UK will be able to represent their interests at the same level as its own interests. Flowers blood-red, the anthers apparently white or yellowish. The upper bract-like oblong-ovate leaves are merely crenate. Each leaf-crenation is tipped with one long cilium. Densely appressed silky-villous simple-stemmed shrub with crowded linear-lanceolate sessile leaves and long terminal racemes of leafy bracted greenish yellow or reddish tinged subtubular flowers; leaves subentire or obscurely crenate-serrulate, 8-12 cm. long, about 1 cm. wide, acute base and apex; calyx 3.5-4 cm. long, 8-10 mm. wide, sepals lanceolate, acuminate, 7-8 mm. long, 2 mm. wide at base, the petals shorter and narrower; crown irregularly and slightly dentate; capsule included or barely exserted; seeds minutely and obscurely striate. To about 1 meter high in steep, loose, rocky soils. Species distinctive in its closely appressed sericeous pubes- cence. -

UK Overseas Territories
INFORMATION PAPER United Kingdom Overseas Territories - Toponymic Information United Kingdom Overseas Territories (UKOTs), also known as British Overseas Territories (BOTs), have constitutional and historical links with the United Kingdom, but do not form part of the United Kingdom itself. The Queen is the Head of State of all the UKOTs, and she is represented by a Governor or Commissioner (apart from the UK Sovereign Base Areas that are administered by MOD). Each Territory has its own Constitution, its own Government and its own local laws. The 14 territories are: Anguilla; Bermuda; British Antarctic Territory (BAT); British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT); British Virgin Islands; Cayman Islands; Falkland Islands; Gibraltar; Montserrat; Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands; Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha; South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands; Turks and Caicos Islands; UK Sovereign Base Areas. PCGN recommend the term ‘British Overseas Territory Capital’ for the administrative centres of UKOTs. Production of mapping over the UKOTs does not take place systematically in the UK. Maps produced by the relevant territory, preferably by official bodies such as the local government or tourism authority, should be used for current geographical names. National government websites could also be used as an additional reference. Additionally, FCDO and MOD briefing maps may be used as a source for names in UKOTs. See the FCDO White Paper for more information about the UKOTs. ANGUILLA The territory, situated in the Caribbean, consists of the main island of Anguilla plus some smaller, mostly uninhabited islands. It is separated from the island of Saint Martin (split between Saint-Martin (France) and Sint Maarten (Netherlands)), 17km to the south, by the Anguilla Channel. -
