Sanjeev Kohli set for ’s Shieldinch

Scots actor Sanjeev Kohli is set to make his way to BBC Scotland’s popular weekly soap, River City, arriving in Shieldinch in the Autumn as new character Amandeep ‘AJ’ Jandhu.

Sanjeev (, Fresh Meat) will play the role of local lad made good, AJ, a former banker who returns to Shieldinch to rediscover his roots and start up a small business venture along with his wife and son. The casting of Sanjeev’s on screen family will be announced in the coming weeks.

Along with his TV family, Sanjeev will film his first scenes for River City in the Autumn and debut on screen in October 2015.

Sanjeev Kohli is looking forward to setting up home in Shieldinch: “River City is a Scottish institution and I’m chuffed to bits to be joining the cast. To be honest, I’ve been waiting for the call to join for quite some time now. I even bought a special phone – which I've been staring at for seven years - and it finally rang"

Kathleen Hutchison, River City’s Executive Producer, is thrilled to welcome Sanjeev to River City: “Everyone at River City is delighted Sanjeev will soon be part of the Shieldinch community joining our talented cast. Sanjeev is one of Scotland’s biggest stars and I’m excited about him bringing his natural warmth and wit to the show. AJ and his family are certain to turn heads when they set up home, and launch a new business, in the Autumn! It’s wonderful to see River City continue to attract such star casting as the show goes from strength to strength.”

Another new face joining the cast in the Autumn is Gayle Telfer Stevens (Scot Squad, Sketchland) who will play Caitlin McLean, the older, but not wiser, sister of Ellie (Leah MacRae). Unlike her sensible, hard-working sister, Caitlin has never worked a day in her life, and doesn’t care what people think of her. She arrives in Shieldinch with her three children, student Jenny, teenager Drew and baby of the family, 11-year-old Ruby. Together, the McLeans looks set to ruffle the features of Shieldinch’s residents.

River City is part of BBC Scotland’s commitment to produce distinctive Scottish output and complements productions including Stonemouth (BBC One Scotland & BBC Two), One of Us (BBC One), Shetland (BBC One), Sunset Song, Katie Morag (CBeebies), Bob Servant (BBC Four), Murder (BBC Two) and landmark series, Highlands (BBC One).

Legendary sportswriter Hugh McIlvanney reveals the stories behind his scoops in new Radio Scotland series Acclaimed sports journalist Hugh McIlvanney will tell the compelling story of his career in a six-part BBC Radio Scotland series which begins this weekend. The Ayrshire-born journalist, 81, will give remarkable insights into the lives of many of the stars he has interviewed and reported on during a career that stretches back more than five decades. McIlvanney was interviewed by Radio Scotland sports presenter Geoff Webster for the The McIlvanney Conversations series that begins on Sunday, June 14, at 1 pm on Radio Scotland on both FM and MW. The journalist has been an eye witness to many of sports greatest moments and has enjoyed the company of such legends as , Pele, , Sir , and Lester Piggott. He says his biggest ‘scoop’ was being invited into Muhammad Ali’s villa just hours after he’d regained the World Heavyweight boxing title from George Foreman in that epic showdown in Zaire, remembered fondly as the ‘Rumble In The Jungle’ in 1974. For two-and-a-half hours, McIlvanney filled his notebook, as Ali – unable to sleep after stopping Foreman just before the end of the eighth round – explained how he produced one of the great upsets in boxing history. He says: ‘It was by far the greatest privilege I’ve ever had as a reporter.’ Of all the footballers he’s watched, he places four above all others – Pele, Maradona, Di Stefano and Messi – and he adds there are strong cases also for George Best and . He also believes is the best Scottish he’s seen although he puts , , and not far behind. He says: ‘“I think Graeme Souness is one of the greatest players who ever played for us.To me, Souness was the best player of our . I like players who know the story, who know how the game works and Graeme really knew that and that’s why everybody around him played better.” The sports writer, who is the brother of William McIlvanney, one of the Scotland’s best-known novelists, forged close working and personal relationships with, perhaps, the four finest football managers to emerge from Scotland – Jock Stein, Sir Matt Busby, and Sir . Hugh McIlvanney has been described as Britain’s greatest-ever sports writer and, in addition to a long list of awards and honours, he has also been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He started on his local paper in before spells on The Scotsman and The led to and eventually to , where he still delivers his thoughts on a wide range of topics in a regular column. The series will include readings by McIlvanney of some of his best known writing and archive audio from milestone sporting events he reported on. The McIlvanney Conversations will focus on the sports that he covered in-depth: football, boxing and horse racing.

 The first episode of The McIlvanney Conversations airs this Sunday, June 14, at 1 p.m on Radio Scotland, 92-95 FM and 810 MW. The series will be broadcast within Sportsound, Radio Scotland’s regular sports programme.

BBC Scotland Investigates: The Fall of Labour in Scotland Monday, 22 June BBC One Scotland, 9.00 – 10.00 pm

Following Labour’s heavy defeat in Scotland at the General Election, BBC Scotland Investigates examines the reasons for the decline of the party at the polls and where it might go from here. Former leaders Henry McLeish and Jack McConnell are among the contributors who air their views on the recent setbacks and how the party can rebuild. The programme includes a look at the Labour Party’s place in Scotland’s social history and hears candid opinions from activists on where the problems began and how solutions could be found. It will examine how Labour went from a party that could have been said to have shaped Scotland - one seen as almost a saviour of the miners and other groups of workers in the first half of the last century - to one which now has only one Scottish MP.

This week in Shieldinch… Kelly-Marie’s attempts to pay-off Alex’s debts to Lenny prove unsettling; Alex gets blood on his hands during a dodgy deal set up by Shug; and there’s friction between Alan and Duncan’s family when Josie unwittingly becomes school gossip. After a profitable night at Chrome, Kelly-Marie goes to Lenny with double the usual amount owed – keen to pay off Alex’s debt sooner rather than later. However, Alex is spooked when he discovers the money he had earmarked for Shug has gone. Unwilling to be out of pocket, Shug offers Alex the chance to settle his debt – take part in a lorry hijack and sell the booze illegally. Alex plays the deal down to Kelly-Marie, telling her they can pay Lenny off quicker this way. Initially reluctant to do anything illegal, Kelly-Marie has a change of heart, persuaded by Alex’s promise it’s a victimless crime. However, Shug makes sure Alex is implicated in the lorry hijack, forcing him to take part in beating up the lorry driver. As word of the crime spreads, cracks begin to appear in Kelly-Marie and Alex’s relationship – all under the watchful, and concerned, eye of Gabriel. Elsewhere, Josie becomes the victim of hurtful rumours at school. Kirsty warns Josie a boy in their year is circulating a topless picture of her but her advice is met with a hostile reception. Believing Kirsty is deliberating spreading rumours about the fake picture, Duncan confronts Alan as friction grows between the families.

Kelly-Marie is played by Carmen Pieraccini, Alex by Jordan Young, Lenny by Frank Gallagher, Shug by Robert Jack, Alan by Stephen McCole, Duncan by Stewart Porter, Josie by Rachael Anne Keiller, Gabriel by Garry Sweeney and Kirsty by Bobby Rainsbury.

As heavy snows pound Donner Summit, Edgar Stratton races to a frozen lake where he must save an SUV that's fallen half way through the ice. To make matters worse, the driver is still stuck inside. Every treacherous winter on California's US Interstate 80, near Donner Pass and the small town of Truckee, three teams of hardcore tow truck drivers risk their lives rescuing stranded and wrecked motorists littered across one of the most dangerous roads in America. It is all about high risk and high reward, with each driver responding to as many as fifteen calls a day, sending them out in blinding blizzards and ice storms in the dead of night.
