Särskilda lampfester, lychnapsia, antas ha hållits under romersk tid vid den egyptiska gudinnan Isis födelsedag den 12 augusti. Herodotos berättar i sin Historia om de lampfestivaler som firades i det som numera heter Sa el-Hagar i västra Nildeltat: ”När de samlar sig i staden Saïs till offerfester, tänder de alla under en viss bestämd natt en massa lampor runt omkring husen. Lam- porna är skålar, som fyllts med salt och olja, och ovanpå flyter veken. Det brinner så hela natten, och festens namn är lampfesten. De egypter, som inte infinner sig till denna allmänna fest, passar ändå noga på den natt, då offerfesten pågår, och tänder även själva allesammans sina lampor, och på det sättet brinner det inte bara i Saïs utan över hela Egypten. Men varför denna natt blir upplyst och hedrad, därom berättas en helig sägen.” (2.62) Dessa ljushögtider var ett sätt att hedra de döda, varvid de veka lampflammorna anspelade på själens flyktighet. Modergudinnan Isis, som förknippades med döden och de döda, försökte återföra sin bror och make, fruktbarhetsguden Osiris, till livet. Isis heter också den tidskrift för veten- skapshistoria som började ges ut 1913 av George Sarton. År 1936 grunda- des därtill en årsbok med namnet Osiris. Samma år kom första årgången av Lychnos, grundad av Johan Nordström, som var god vän med Sarton. Den nya årsboken för idé- och lärdomshistoria fick redan för sitt första nummer oljelampan som symbol – inpräglad i guld på det mörkblå bandets framsida – anspelande på ljuset och lampfesten tillägnad Isis och Osiris. Lychnos, årsboken för idé- och lärdomshistoria, fyller en viktig funktion för att samla forskare i Sverige inriktade mot tankarnas och idéernas his- toria, kunskapens, lärdomens, vetenskapens, medicinens och teknikens historia, de politiska, sociala, religiösa, estetiska och humanistiska idéer- nas historia. Den samlar idéhistoriker i Göteborg, Lund, Stockholm, Umeå, Uppsala och på andra håll i Sverige och i världen. Ett stort tack till den föregående redaktionen i Göteborg, Katarina Leppänen och Karolina Enquist Källgren, som förvaltat Lychnos

Alascio had graduated from Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina, in 1942, to begin his surgical training with Professor Juan Martín Allende (1895–1990), a respected thoracic surgeon in Córdoba,! followed by general surgery practice at a military hospital under the supervision of Dr Oscar Ivanissevich (1895–1976)." With Allende, Alascio specialised in thoracic surgery, which he further developed at Instituto de Tisiología and the British Hospital in Buenos Aires, and the San Juan Hospital in the city of La Plata.# Alascio was therefore an active surgeon when he wrote to Crafoord. However, to improve his skills he desired to travel abroad, and requested to be allowed to work under the supervision of the Swedish professor in his ward at the Sabbatsberg Hospital in Stockholm. Initial contacts and introductory letters seldom reveal the trajectory and outcomes of relationships and ensuing actions. Alascio’s is no excep- tion in this regard. Still, this apparently simple request might be also regarded as the starting point of the story I tell in this paper: how the Swedish surgeon Clarence Crafoord made four tours to South America.
