SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY

We are planning on purchasing new octagon picnic tables for the pavilion. The new octagon tables will be much easier for our guests to enter and exit the benches, and the new tables will expand our seating capacity in the pavilion. We are asking for sponsors to help defer the cost of this project. For a donation of $400 or more, your name will be engraved on a plaque which will be mounted on a table. We will also list the names of anyone who is willing to help us out financially on a plaque that will be mounted on a wall in the Pavilion. For information, please contact John O’Brien at 216-375-2890. Thank you for your consideration in helping us improve our facility. WSIA Trustees and Officers

Heather Harvey & Christi Cruz HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY

Thank You to Christmas Decorators! There 25 volunteers who came out on Nov. 26th to put it all up, then 25+, including the Regular Tuesday Crew, came out on Jan. 3rd to take it all down. If you gave an hour or several hours of your time, is was greatly appreciated. The majority of the volunteers are seniors and the lugging, lifting, figuring, transporting, unloading, climbing, hanging, placing, taking down, packaging, labeling, encouraging, apprenticing, teaching truly shows your dedication. We desperately need more young workers! Special thanks to newcomers Eileen Chambers Boland with daughters Kate and Bridget, Maureen Donelon Chambers with daughter Bridget, and Kathleen Lally with grandson Dennis Lally – who worked with some of the Pros (Dick and Kay Bowman, Larry O’Donnell, Sarah McLaughlin, John Lackey, John Lavelle, Pat Leneghan, Tom & Kathleen Egan). Pardon if your name isn’t mentioned. Thank you to McDonough’s Brigade who provided the fine meals. While St. Patrick’s Day may be a few months away it’s not too soon for us to prepare for this special day.

We look forward to the culmination of this day which of course is the grand parade. The WSIA is proud to be a participant with the largest unit in the parade – including our impressive drill team, marching units and award-winning float.

Being the largest unit in the parade comes with substantial costs. To defray these costs, we publish an annual souvenir program booklet showcasing our sponsors and supporters. We hope you will consider participating.

The booklet will be distributed at major club functions and will be viewed by hundreds of club members and other supporters beginning March 3, 2018 and forward. Featured are the 2018 honorees: Queen – Courtney Kuntz Woman of the Year – Maureen Cseh Man of the Year– Bill Luther Co-Volunteer of the Year – Bill Rice Co- Volunteer of the Year – John Quien Co- Volunteer of the Year – Tom Lucas

The West Side Irish American Club congratulates the 2018 honorees of the United Irish Societies: Grand Marshall – Sheila Murphy Crawford; Mother of the Year – Joan Reali; Inside Co-Chair – Noreen Halley; and Outside Co-Chair – Linda Burke.

Please review the attached ad submittal form for ad selections, pricing information and instructions.

We thank you in advance for your generous support for our vibrant organization and in helping to maintain the traditions and spirit of St. Patrick’s Day.

Cordially yours,

The Board of Trustee

WORD HAS IT….. From Your Library

Book Review by Kenny Gilson: Star of the Sea by Joseph O’Connor: Published in 2004, this is a historical fiction novel that chronicles the voyage of a famine ship from Ireland to New York in 1847, which was the height of the potato famine. It is narrated by an American journalist, G. Grantley Dixon, who is also a character in the novel. Conflict is inevitable, but the author is more interested in the complexity of history and relationships and how each makes reinvention and resolution impossible. His method of writing lends a sense of authenticity to the novel. Hundreds of refugees are on the coffin ship, among them a maid with a devastating secret, a bankrupt Lord and his family, and a killer who stalks his victim with vengeance. Dixon does an insightful job relating each character’s story and how they all were affected by the famine. O’Connor presents another viewpoint and reasons for the famine and its lasting effects on the passengers.

The New York Times book review sums it up quite nicely saying “Star of the Sea is an agonizing inquiry into the nature of abandonment and the difficulty of finding anyone who will truly care about the fate of others.” All in all, the novel is a very good read; it will get to you, the plot is outstanding, the book is full of historical detail and interesting characters.

Good health, good reading,

Rose Conley
