COOK AND PROFESSOR THOMAS D. SEYMOUR — PREFACE The student who diligently peruses the lines of a great poem may go far toward a realization of its char- acter. He may appreciate, in a degree, its loveliness, strength, and direct hold upon the catholic truth of life. But he will be more sensitive to these appeals, and receive gifts that are richer and less perishable, accord- ing as he comprehends the forces by whose interaction the poem was produced. These are of two kinds the innate forces of the poet's character, and certain more external forces, such as, in the case of Milton, are represented by Hellenism and Hebraism. Their activ- ity is greatest where they meet and touch, and at this point their nature and measure are most easily dis- cerned. From a contemplation of the poem in its gene- sis one returns to a deeper understanding and enjoyment of it as a completed whole. The present study, though it deals with but one of the important cultural influ- ences affecting Milton, and with it but in part, endeav- ors by this method to deepen and clarify the apprecia- tion of his art and teaching. My interest in the present work has found support and encouragement in the opinions of Mr. Churton Collins, as expressed in his valuable book. -

Helen is discovered alone before the tomb. Helen These are the lovely pure streams of the Nile, which waters the plain and lands of Egypt, fed by white melting snow instead of rain from heaven. Proteus was king [turannos] of this land when he was alive, [5] living [oikeîn] on the island of Pharos and lord of Egypt; and he married one of the daughters of the sea, Psamathe, after she left Aiakos' bed. She bore two children in his palace here: a son Theoklymenos, [because he spent his life in reverence of the gods,] [10] and a noble daughter, her mother's pride, called Eido in her infancy. But when she came to youth, the season of marriage, she was called Theonoe; for she knew whatever the gods design, both present and to come, [15] having received these honors [tīmai] from her grandfather Nereus. My own fatherland, Sparta, is not without fame, and my father is Tyndareus; but there is indeed a story that Zeus flew to my mother Leda, taking the form of a bird, a swan, [20] which accomplished the deceitful union, fleeing the pursuit of an eagle, if this story is true. Helen’s Autopsy: A Forensic Approach to Myth in Herodotus’ Histories Julie Felix Reed College June 2015 I’d like to start by explaining the title of my talk: “Helen’s Autopsy, A Forensic Approach to Myth in Herodotus’s Histories.” Herodotus wrote The Histories in the 5th century BC. He is sometimes called the Father of History, because he was the first person to attempt to document the past factually, based on evidence, and he was the first to call that process ‘Historie’, which is the Greek word for ‘inquiry’. As for Helen’s autopsy, there is no autopsy as we would understand the word. Autopsy, or opsis in Greek, means to be an “eyewitness,” and it was one part of Herodotus 3-step method of inquiry. I called his approach ‘forensic’ because Herodotus is the first known writer to apply a method for testing the factuality of the information he recorded. His 3-step process included: opsis, his own eyewitness account; akoē, gathering oral information from people he interviewed; and gnōmē, his analysis of his findings. The Histories documents the Greco- Persian wars, a half-century long conflict between Greece and Persia, and Herodotus spent decades traveling the Mediterranean recording firsthand accounts of the war, speaking to record-keepers, and visiting monuments and significant sites. But he didn’t just record what he learned, he added meaning to his narrative in the way he presented it, using symbols, epic language, and thematic structuring. One way he add layers of subtext into his work is through the use of mythic material, and this is why we are looking at how he presents Helen of Troy in The Histories. -

Sommerstein Excerpt More Information INTRODUCTION 1 AESCHyLuS Aeschylus was born, probably at Eleusis, in or about 525/4 bc;1 his father Euphorion is said to have been a member of Athens’ ancient aristocracy, the Eupatridae (A. T 1.2 TrGF). He made his debut as a tragic dramatist between 499 and 496 (T 52), but he did not win irst prize until 484 (T 54a); in 490 he had taken part in the battle of Marathon (T 1.10; 2.2–3; 11–13; 54; 162.3–4), where his brother Cynegeirus met a heroic end (Hdt. 6.114 = T 16), and a decade later he fought at Salamis and Plataea (T 1.11–12, partly conirmed by his younger contemporary Ion of Chios, FGrH 392 F7 = T 14). From 484 to the end of his career A. won irst prize 13 times in all; par- ticularly after the death of his great rival Phrynichus about 473,2 he must have been victorious almost every time he competed, though he is said to have been defeated by the young Sophocles in 468.3 Probably in 4704 he was invited to visit Sicily by Hieron, tyrant of Syracuse; on this visit he restaged Persians (T 56) and produced a specially composed play, Aitnaiai 1 This was clearly the preponderant ancient tradition, as evidenced by statements that he put on his irst production at the age of 25 (A. T 2.4 TrGF) in the 70th Olympiad (500/499–497/6) (T52), that he was 35 when he fought at Marathon in 490 (T 11), and that he died in 456/5 at the age of 69 (T 3) – though some sources (T 1.50, 2.9, 5.3) imply various later birth dates. -

Danaus βουγενής: Greco-Egyptian Mythology and Ptolemaic Kingship Alexandros Kampakoglou HE THIRD BOOK of Callimachus’s Aetia opens with an elegy that celebrates the chariot victory of Queen Berenice II in the Nemean games (frr.54–60j).1 Accord- T 2 ing to the introductory couplet, the Victoria Berenices is offered by Callimachus to Zeus and Nemea as a gift on behalf of his patron, Berenice II: Ζηνί τε κα⸤ὶ Νεµέηι τι χαρίσιον ἕδνον ὀφείλω⸥, νύµφα, κα[σιγνή]τ̣ων ἱερὸν αἷµα θεῶν, ἡµ[ε]τ̣ερο.[......].εων ἐπινίκιον ἵππω̣[ν]. To Zeus and Nemea I owe a gift of gratitude, nymph, sacred blood of the sibling gods, our victory song […] of horses. Zeus and Nemea appear as the receivers of Callimachus’ gift because of their connection with the Nemean games: the myth of the Victoria Berenices narrates the killing of the Nemean lion but memorializes the creation by Heracles of the wreath that Nemean victors received as a prize. The mythic part of the poem concludes with a sacrifice to Zeus performed jointly by Heracles and Molorcus (fr.60c.8–10). The frame mirrors, in this regard, the actions of the myth: Heracles offers a sacrifice to his divine father with the assistance of his host, Molorcus; Berenice consecrates the elegy to Zeus, the divine progenitor of 1 I cite the edition of A. Divine Riddles: A Sourcebook for Greek and Roman Mythology March, 2014 E. Edward Garvin, Editor What follows is a collection of excerpts from Greek literary sources in translation. The intent is to give students an overview of Greek mythology as expressed by the Greeks themselves. But any such collection is inherently flawed: the process of selection and abridgement produces a falsehood because both the narrative and meta-narrative are destroyed when the continuity of the composition is interrupted. Nevertheless, this seems the most expedient way to expose students to a wide range of primary source information. I have tried to keep my voice out of it as much as possible and will intervene as editor (in this Times New Roman font) only to give background or exegesis to the text. All of the texts in Goudy Old Style are excerpts from Greek or Latin texts (primary sources) that have been translated into English. Ancient Texts In the field of Classics, we refer to texts by Author, name of the book, book number, chapter number and line number.1 Every text, regardless of language, uses the same numbering system. Homer’s Iliad, for example, is divided into 24 books and the lines in each book are numbered. Hesiod’s Theogony is much shorter so no book divisions are necessary but the lines are numbered. Below is an example from Homer’s Iliad, Book One, showing the English translation on the left and the Greek original on the right. When citing this text we might say that Achilles is first mentioned by Homer in Iliad 1.7 (i.7 is also acceptable). -

Robert Graves – The Greek Myths 1955, revised 1960 Robert Graves was born in 1895 at Wimbledon, son of Alfred Perceval Graves, the Irish writer, and Amalia von Ranke. He went from school to the First World War, where he became a captain in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. His principal calling is poetry, and his Selected Poems have been published in the Penguin Poets. Apart from a year as Professor of English Literature at Cairo University in 1926 he has since earned his living by writing, mostly historical novels which include: I, Claudius; Claudius the God; Sergeant Lamb of the Ninth; Count Belisarius; Wife to Mr Milton (all published as Penguins); Proceed, Sergeant Lamb; The Golden Fleece; They Hanged My Saintly Billy; and The Isles of Unwisdom. He wrote his autobiography, Goodbye to All That (a Penguin Modem Classic), in 1929. His two most discussed non-fiction books are The White Goddess, which presents a new view of the poetic impulse, and The Nazarene Gospel Restored (with Joshua Podro), a re-examination of primitive Christianity.
