February 2020 A brief history of QMUL

QMUL has its roots in 4 historic London Colleges:

• Queen Mary College (founded 1887) • Westfield College (founded 1882) • St Bartholomew’s Hospital (founded 1123) • The London Hospital (founded 1740) A brief history of QMUL

Queen Mary College dates back to the opening of the People's Palace on Road in 1887.

People’s Palace founded as part of a Victorian drive to improve the social and educational conditions of the people of the East End.

These foundations are evident today • QMUL UK’s 1st Living Wage Campus • Champions public engagement, and research that makes a contribution to both the international research community and local people • Support of local schools St. Paul’s Way Trust and Drapers’ Multi-Academy Trust • Seeks to foster a vibrant but inclusive research community A brief history of QMUL • Queen Mary was admitted to the University of London in 1915 • In 1989, merged with Westfield College to become Queen Mary and Westfield College (QMW) • Westfield College was founded in 1882, and was the first University of London College to admit women • In 1995, St Bartholomew’s Hospital (founded 1123) and The Royal London Hospital (founded 1740) merged, and joined Queen Mary to form the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry – so creating Queen Mary University of London as we know it today So where are we now? • ca. 26,000 students - including ca. 2000 PhD students - and ca. 4500 staff • Working in 3 Faculties: Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, and the School of Medicine and Dentistry • Across 5 campuses: at Mile End, , Charterhouse Square, West Smithfield, and Lincoln’s Inn Fields • Also one of the world’s 20 most international universities – with students from 162 different countries, and 35% of staff born outside of the UK • International teaching in China (BUPT and Nanchang) and Paris (LLM). A Research Intensive University • 8 Nobel Prize winners • £144m annual research income • In top 100 of World’s Universities, THE world rankings • – placing us in top 0.1% of universities globally • Ranked 9th in the UK for quality of research in 2014 • Research Excellence Framework (REF) • Top 10 in the UK for a number of subjects including : Drama, Geography, English, Electrical Engineering, Linguistic, and Medicine • A member of the of research intensive universities Internal Organisation • Humanities and Social Sciences - Business and Management, Economics and Finance, English and Drama, Geography, History, Languages, Linguistics and Film, Law, Politics and International Relations

Sir Gareth Roberts 2002 • 2 Forms of training • Research training necessary to conduct your research: e.g. specialist methods, laboratory techniques • Researcher (or Personal and Professional Development) training necessary to develop as a researcher : e.g. how to win funding, how to complete an ethics application, advice on publishing

• Delivered through 5 routes: • Schools and Institutes – research training courses; many also have bespoke researcher training tailored to your discipline (e.g. how to publish in History) • Research Council Doctoral Training Centres – specialist research training courses, some researcher development activities • External Training Provision – specialist research training as necessary e.g. LTCC, can apply for funding to cover costs • Researcher Development – highly developed, researcher development programme tailored to the different needs of Year 1, 2 and 3 students • Doctoral College – researcher development training organised around ‘cohort events’ (Year 1 Networking; Year 2 Public Engagement, Year 3 Employment), GradFest and other events Leading to a Queen Mary Diploma in Researcher Development when 210 training points have been accrued Year 1 PhD Induction – 5th February 2020 – Morning Session Time Location Activity Presenter 09:30-9:50 Foyer, Rotblat Registration Building 10:00-10:10 G02, Rotblat Welcome to QMUL Dr Paul Allen Building Opportunities for Development 10:15-10:25 Overview of training at QMUL Dr Paul Allen 10:25-10:30 The Doctoral College Zi Parker 10:30-10:45 The Researcher Development Programme and the Points-Based System Fryni Panayidou 10:45-10:50 The Research Degrees Office Mary Childs 10:50-11:00 Equality and Diversity Zi Parker 11:00-11:25 Foyer, Rotblat Coffee and Networking Building 11:25-11:30 G02, Rotblat Careers Fryni Panayidou 11:30-11:35 Building Library Sarah Molloy 11:35-11:40 Internal Funding Opportunities Dr Paul Allen 11:40-11:45 Public Engagement Natt Day 11:45-11:50 The Language Centre Alan Hart 11:50-11:55 IT Services Pinal Patel 11:55-12:00 IT Research Andrew Cooper 12:00-12:05 Ethics Approval Hazel Covill 12.05-12.10 Intellectual Property Ben Golland 12:10-12:15 Widening Participation Gideon Woldeslassie / Sally Moore 12:15-12:20 Welfare Advice and Counselling Support Kevin Halon 12:20-12:30 PGR Rep and NUS Megan Annetts & Nazia Uddin Year 1 PhD Induction – 5th February 2020 – Afternoon Session Your induction pack can be downloaded at: www.qmul.ac.uk/doctoralcollege/ 12:30-14:00 TheShield 2 Lunch and Information Fair
