Super-Curricular Suggestions
Super- curricular suggestions Strong applicants to Cambridge and other competitive universities tend to have explored their chosen subject through wider reading outside the classroom, as well as doing very well in their GCSEs and A-levels. We call this sort of exploration ‘super-curricular’, as it builds on and enhances what you are studying in school. We do not expect you to pay for this sort of exploration and have endeavoured to provide resources that are mostly freely available. This selection of suggested reading lists and resources has been gathered from the Cambridge departmental and College websites, other universities and other sources on the internet. These lists are certainly NOT ‘required reading’ for Cambridge applicants. They simply provide some suggestions for places to start exploring your own interests in your chosen subject independently - you do not need to engage with any of the specific websites, books, podcasts etc mentioned and can easily find your own alternatives. The following lists are suggestions only. It is important to read critically by thinking carefully about the arguments, assumptions and evidence presented by the author. Reading is a great way to explore subjects that you find interesting – but there are many other ways to deepen your understanding: investigate your local museums, monuments, galleries and natural features, and think analytically about nature, machinery or the built environment. After the COVID-19 lockdown, perhaps you can visit some of these! The best thing about super-curricular activities is that there are no exams or deadlines to worry about – you are free to follow your own lines of enquiry into the areas that interest you the most. -

RECTOR’S NEWS It must be spring: only last week, the Classicists coming back from Mods were being showered with celebratory buckets of water – hardly necessary, given the downpour. And a crocus is blooming in a corner of the front quad, protected by the President of the JCR who has asked that the grass be left uncut while it flowers. FRANCES CAIRNCROSS But it has been a grey and rainy term, with the Thames in flood and Torpids nearly cancelled. We have cheered ourselves up in a number of ways this term. Our rowers did not do brilliantly but our rugby team won the Cuppers Plate. After some debate, we marked our commitment to equality and diversity by flying the Rainbow Flag at the end of February. The Ken Colyer New Orleans Legacy Jazz Band led the annual march around the three Turl Street quads as part of a wonderfully successful Turl Street Arts Festival, and then blew their horns for a Prohibition themed party in Hall, under the stern gaze of Rector Farnell, who once said that such jazz “comes from the devil”. As part of our build-up to next year’s 700th anniversary celebrations, Sir Paul Nurse gave a memorable lecture on “Great ideas of biology, both historical and looking THE WINNING RUGBY forward” to an audience of students, alumni and friends of the College. It was as TEAM riveting for non-scientists as it was for scientists. -

Mesons with Beauty and Charm: New Horizons in Spectroscopy Estia J. Eichten∗ and Chris Quiggy Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory P.O. Box 500, Batavia, Illinois 60510 USA (Dated: June 18, 2019) + ¯ The Bc family of (cb) mesons with beauty and charm is of special interest among heavy quarko- + ¯ nium systems. The Bc mesons are intermediate between (cc¯) and (bb) states both in mass and size, so many features of the (c¯b) spectrum can be inferred from what we know of the charmonium and bottomonium systems. The unequal quark masses mean that the dynamics may be richer than a simple interpolation would imply, in part because the charmed quark moves faster in Bc than in the + J= . Close examination of the Bc spectrum can test our understanding of the interactions between heavy quarks and antiquarks and may reveal where approximations break down. Whereas the J= and Υ levels that lie below flavor threshold are metastable with respect to strong decays, the Bc ground state is absolutely stable against strong or electromagnetic decays. Its dominant weak decays arise from ¯b ! cW¯ ?+, c ! sW ?+, and c¯b ! W ?+ transitions, where W ? designates a virtual weak boson. Prominent examples of the first category are quarkonium + + + + transmutations such as Bc ! J= π and Bc ! J= ` ν`, where J= designates the (cc¯) 1S level. The high data rates and extraordinarily capable detectors at the Large Hadron Collider give renewed impetus to the study of mesons with beauty and charm. Motivated by the recent exper- imental searches for the radially excited Bc states, we update the expectations for the low-lying spectrum of the Bc system. -

This historic achievement for the College was celebrated by carrying Mr Mac (a boat with significant history at Keble) through town past the College. I was held aloft, riding the boat, crowds surging and chanting out Keble’s victory. The most surreal experience of my athletic career, and what a way to finish! PANELIST BIOGRAPHIES CATE ADAIR Catherine Adair was born in England, spent her primary education in Switzerland, and then returned to the UK where she earned her degree in Set & Costume Design from the University of Nottingham. After a series of apprenticeships in the London Theater, Catherine immigrated to the United States where she initially worked as a costume designer in East Coast theater productions. Her credits there include The Kennedy Center, Washington Ballet, Onley Theater Company, The Studio and Wolf Trap. Catherine then moved to Los Angeles, joined the West Coast Costume Designers Guild, and started her film and television career. Catherine’s credits include The 70s mini-series for NBC; The District for CBS; the teen film I Know What You Did Last Summer and Dreamworks’ Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. Currently Catherine is the costume designer for the new ABC hit series Desperate Housewives. ROSE APODACA As the West Coast Bureau Chief for Women's Wear Daily (WWD) and a contributor to W, Rose Apodaca and her team cover the fashion and beauty industries in a region reaching from Seattle to Las Vegas to San Diego, as well as report on the happenings in Hollywood and the culture-at-large. Apodaca is also instrumental in the many events and related projects tied to WWD and the fashion business in Los Angeles, including the establishment of LA Fashion Week, and has long been a champion of the local design community. Zimermmane-Santos São Carlos Institute of Physics, University of São Paulo, PO Box 369, 13560-1970 São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil HPQCD Collaboration http://www.physics.gla.ac.uk/HPQCD/ Lattice QCD can provide a direct determination of meson electromagnetic form factors, mak- ing predictions for upcoming experiments at Jefferson Lab. The form factors are a reflection of the bound-state nature of the meson and so these calculations give information about how confinement by QCD affects meson internal structure. The region of high squared (space-like) momentum-transfer, Q2, is of particular interest because perturbative QCD predictions take a sim- ple form in that limit that depends on the meson decay constant. We previously showed in [1] that, up to Q2 of 6 GeV2, the form factor for a ‘pseudo-pion’ made of strange quarks was significantly larger than the asymptotic perturbative QCD result and showed no sign of heading towards that value at higher Q2. Here we give predictions for real mesons, the K+ and K0, in anticipation of arXiv:1902.03808v1 [hep-lat] 11 Feb 2019 + JLAB results for the K in the next few years.
