In line with this tradition, in this special English language issue, we present a selection of articles published in “Kino” in the last year. They include reviews, interviews, as well as articles concerning the history of Polish cinema and opinion columns. However, we focus on the most interesting Polish feature films (of which 41 have been made there between the beginning of 2007 and May 2008), as well as documentary and animated films of the last year. Some of them could be seen at various international festivals, where they received numerous awards. The most prestigious award, an Oscar, came to the short animated film, “Peter and the Wolf”, which is a British-Polish co-production, directed by Suzie Templeton and made in the Studio Se-Ma-For in Łódź. On the other hand, the most awarded Polish film was “Tricks” by Andrzej Jakimowski, which till April 2008 received 12 awards, including at the festivals in Gdynia, Venice, Tokyo, Mannheim, Sao Paulo and Miami. However, what counts more than awards is the fact that Polish viewers have regained pleasure in watching Polish films. -

PhDr. Jiří Vykoukal, CSc Abstract This work aims to demonstrate differences in national memory of Communism in the Czech Republic and Poland. It looks into the principles surrounding the practice of collective memory and then uses this to create a working methodology for the study of it in these two nations. In evaluating memory in these countries it relies upon the “Three Pillars” of past events, cultural output and popular opinion and stresses the interconnected nature of these academic areas. A further emphasis is placed upon the role of belief in shaping personal and group self-identity. The overall conclusions stress that both of the national memories of these countries have been shaped by their history, culture and popular opinion, and that this has created a divide between the Polish and Czech views of events during the Communist period. The divide is seen as characterised by particular “Czech” and “Polish” viewpoints which are the product of discourse on previous aspects of what it means to belong to these respective groups. National memory in essence builds upon itself, and will continue to do so. -

Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema Throughout North America
INTRODUCTION In December 2011, filmmaker Martin Scorsese traveled to Poland to accept an honorary doctor- al degree from The Polish National Film, Television, and Theatre School in Łódź. There, Mr. Scors- ese met with Jędrzej Sabliński (a digital restoration expert, now with DI Factory), and reviewed a list of new digital restorations of Polish films. In the months following this visit, with the help of The Film Foundation, the two men came up with the idea of a North American tour of a series of restored Polish cinema classics. From an extensive catalogue of digitally restored films, Mr. Scorsese chose twenty-one masterpieces. The Film Foundation executive director, Margaret Bodde then worked with Mr. Sabliński to develop the program and recommended Milestone Films as the North American distributor for the series. Milestone will be touring the 21-film retrospective Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema throughout North America. Premiering in New York City at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on February 5th, 2014, the series features films from some of Poland’s most accom- plished and lauded filmmakers, spanning the period from 1957–1987. Curated by Mr. Scorsese, each film has been digitally re-mastered and brilliantly restored on newly subtitled DCPs. Presner, Co-Chair Professor Roman Koropeckyj, Co-Chair My dissertation investigates the cinematic representation of forced migration (due to the border changes enacted by the Yalta and Potsdam conferences in 1945) in East Germany, West Germany, and Poland, from 1945–1970. My thesis is that, while the representations of these forced migrations appear infrequently in feature film during this period, they not only exist, but perform an important function in the establishment of foundational national narratives in the audiovisual sphere. Rather than declare the existence of some sort of visual taboo, I determine, firstly, why these images appear infrequently; secondly, how and to what purpose(s) existing representations are mobilized; and, thirdly, their relationship to popular and official discourses. -
Introduction
INTRODUCTION AESTHETIC UNFINALIZABILITY Narrative Irresolution at a Time of Great Conclusions The Polish science fiction writer Stanisław Lem’s novel Imaginary Magni- tude (Wielkość urojona, 1973) consists entirely of introductions to nonexistent books. “The art of writing Introductions has long demanded proper recogni- tion,” states Lem’s narrator, and he complains that contemporary art has be- come a forgery, “a promissory note without (transcendental) cover, a (counter- feit) pledge, and (unrealistic) forecast.”1 The author deems himself a “liberator” of the genre of introductions, setting beginnings free from such false promises, and his ode to introductions surfaces at a moment in Polish political history that can itself be charged as being one of “(counterfeit) pledges” and “(unrealistic) forecasts.” Poland in the late socialist era is remembered for its frequent revo- lutions and burgeoning public resistance, and yet it was still marked by an ideol- ogy of the permanence of the communist system. The end that followed nearly a half century of socialist rule, however, was not Communism fulfilled but indeed its shocking collapse. How did Polish cinema and literature figure into that uncertain moment when endings were so charged? What was the role of conclu- sions during a decades-long wait for a utopic eternity? And what happened with fictional endings at this time that itself turned out to be “the end”? I will address 1 © 2018 University of Pittsburgh Press. Corresponding with Lem’s prompt to emanci- pate introductions, artists at this time began to not only redeem beginnings but to reject narrative endings. -

Rather than adhering to formalist conventions in portraying the Holocaust in cinema, Holland breaks the genre’s representational taboos, avoiding a binary narrative and instead engaging in a morally challenging confrontation with the past. Moreover, by focusing on the shared suffering of Poles and Jews during the war and occupation, Holland’s Holocaust films recast the memory of the war to better reflect its complex and at times ambiguous nature. This critical perspective offers a reconciliatory discourse in the competing national memories of both Catholic Poles and Jewish Poles. Specifically, this investigation examines Angry Harvest, Europa Europa, and In Darkness to conclude that the Holocaust films of Agnieszka Holland present a more complete and nuanced portrait of wartime conditions during World War II in Eastern Europe, and Poland in particular. -

Kinga Kosmala Northwestern University Ida and Mother Joan of the Angels: God-like Camera and Women in Habits Paweł Pawlikowski’s Ida and Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s Mother Joan of the Angels portray young nuns in a beautiful, sparsely populated, and oppressive Polish landscape. Ida shows a story of a young nun about to take her vows and having to face the world for the last time in all of its bewildering complexity. Mother Joan of the Angels is a tale of a 17th-century Polish convent, which becomes a local attraction for its nuns pos- sessed by the devil. Both films use sophisticated cinematography keeping the black and white films in hard focus using suggestive lighting, often showing the characters’ faces in partial shadow, and maintaining a contemplative distance on the portrayed world. Becoming a nun means to become “a bride of Christ”, to abandon independent agency, and to serve according to male-established precepts. In my article I consider to what extent the two nuns adhere to this pattern and how the unique work and presence of the camera conveys their adherence to or deviation from it. Both films show nuns who, of course, live in a quite different time and place but who are not certain that the consecrated life is what they truly desire. Both films talk about women who are constrained – by society, history, tradition, their own choices, or someone else’s choices. At the end of both films choices are made, knowledge is learned, even crimes are committed. Ida, who is the main protagonist of the film with her name as the title, is a young nun who discovers that she is Jewish. -

This paper analyses Polish feature films which deal with the subject of POW camps during World War II, especially the so-called oflags (German: Offizierslager), i.e. Wehrmacht camps for officers. In Poland, nearly 200 feature films about World War II and the Nazi occupation were made in 1945–1999, with only eight raising the topic of POW camps. Eroica directed by Andrzej Munk is one of the first examples, and the best-known one. It depicts the social world of the oflags in a grotesque and ironic light, which was acclaimed by film experts but criticised by historians. The theoretical and methodological approach used in the sociology of art and in historical sociology can be invoked to analyse all the elements of the communication system: the creator, the work, and the audience in their social and historical context. The sociological analysis presented here only con- cerns the content of the film (the juxtaposition of “the truth of time” and “the truth of the screen”) and its social reception among different categories of viewers, each with their specific competences. The theoretical concepts developed by S. Ossowski, A. Kłoskowska, P. Francastel, E. Panofsky and P. Bourdieu are used here, alongside historical and sociological analyses of POW camps (D. Kisiele- wicz, A. Matuchniak-Mystkowska). The paper presents a certain research idea and describes methods that can be used to pursue it.
