Chapter 6: Gin 73 Chapter6 Gin A good heavy book holds you down. It’s an anchor that keeps you from getting up and having another gin and tonic. —Roy Blount Jr. Abbey Cocktail 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with 1 oz. orange juice ice. Pour in gin and orange juice, 1 dash orange bitters and add orange bitters. Give it a 1 maraschino cherry good shake, and strain into a cock- tail glass. Garnish with maraschino cherry. Alaska 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with 1 oz. yellow Chartreuse ice. Pour in gin and yellow Char- 2 dashes orange bitters treuse, and add orange bitters. 1 lemon twist Give it a good stir, and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon twist. Alexander’s Sister 1 1 1 ⁄2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with 1 oz. green crème de menthe ice. Pour in gin, green crème de 1 oz. heavy cream menthe, and heavy cream. Give it 1 cucumber slice a good shake, and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with cucumber slice. 72 Part 2: The Recipes Angel Face 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 3 ⁄4 oz. apricot brandy Pour in gin, apricot brandy, and apple 3 ⁄4 oz. apple brandy brandy. Give it a good shake, and strain into a cocktail glass. Arthur Tompkins 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. Grand Marnier Pour in gin, Grand Marnier, and 2 tsp. lemon juice lemon juice. Give it a good shake, 1 lemon twist and strain into a sour glass. Garnish with lemon twist. Artillery 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. sweet vermouth Pour in gin and vermouth, and add 1 dash bitters bitters. Give it a good stir, and strain into a cocktail glass. Aviation 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 tsp. cherry brandy Pour in gin, cherry brandy, and lemon 3 ⁄4 oz. lemon juice juice. Give it a good shake, and strain into a cocktail glass. Barbary Coast 1 1 ⁄2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. light rum Pour in gin, light rum, Scotch whisky, 1 ⁄2 oz. Scotch whisky crème de cacao, and light cream. Give it a 1 ⁄4 oz. orange juice good shake, and strain into a cocktail 1 tsp. grenadine glass. Drip grenadine into center of cocktail. Belles of St. Mary’s 1 1 1 ⁄2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 oz. triple sec Pour in gin, triple sec, apricot brandy, 1 oz. apricot brandy and lemon juice. Give it a good shake, 2 tsp. lemon juice and strain into a cocktail glass. Bennett Cocktail 1 1 1 ⁄2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. lime juice Pour in gin, lime juice, and simple 3 ⁄4 oz. simple syrup syrup, and add orange bitters. Give 1 dash orange bitters it a good shake, and strain into a cocktail glass. Bermuda Highball 1 1 oz. gin Fill a highball glass ⁄2 full with ice. 1 oz. brandy Pour in gin, brandy, and dry ver- 1 ⁄2 oz. dry vermouth mouth. Fill to the top with ginger 4 oz. ginger ale ale, and give it a good stir. Bermuda Rose 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄4 oz. apricot brandy Pour in gin, apricot brandy, lime juice, 1 tsp. lime juice and grenadine. Give it a good shake, 1 tsp. grenadine and strain into a cocktail glass. Bernardo 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. triple sec Pour in gin, triple sec, and lemon 1 TB. lemon juice juice, and add bitters. Give it a good 2 dashes bitters shake, and strain into a cocktail glass. 1 lemon twist Garnish with lemon twist. 74 Part 2: The Recipes Bitch on Wheels 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. dry vermouth Pour in gin, dry vermouth, crème de 1 ⁄2 oz. crème de menthe menthe, and pastis. Give it a good stir, 1 tsp. pastis and strain into a cocktail glass. Blue Cowboy 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. blue curaçao Pour in gin and blue curaçao. Give it a good stir, and strain into a cocktail glass. Blue Devil 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. maraschino liqueur Pour in gin, maraschino liqueur, par- 1 ⁄2 oz. parfait amour fait amour, and lime juice. Give it a 1 oz. lime juice good shake, and strain into a cocktail 1 maraschino cherry glass. Garnish with maraschino cherry. Liquor Lingo Maraschino liqueur is a neutral-spirit-based liqueur that gets its flavor from marasca cherries. Parfait amour is a vanilla-flavored liqueur with hints of marshmallow and citrus. You can use it as a substitute for liqueur de violette or crème de violette, which can be difficult to find. Blue Flyer 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. blue curaçao Pour in gin, curaçao, and lime juice. 1 ⁄2 oz. lime juice Give it a good shake, and strain into a cocktail glass. Blue Moon 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. blue curaçao Pour in gin, blue curaçao, and dry 1 tsp. dry vermouth vermouth. Boomerang 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. dry vermouth Pour in gin, dry vermouth, and 1 tsp. maraschino liqueur maraschino liqueur, and add orange 2 dashes orange bitters bitters. Boxcar 1 1 1 ⁄2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. triple sec Pour in gin, triple sec, grenadine, lime 1 ⁄4 oz. grenadine juice, and egg white. Give it a good, 1 ⁄2 oz. lime juice vigorous shake, and strain into a cock- 1 egg white tail glass. Bronx Cocktail Legend has it that mixologist Johnny Solon of New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Bar created and named the Bronx Cocktail after a visit to the Bronx Zoo. 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 oz. orange juice Pour in gin, orange juice, lemon juice, 1 tsp. lemon juice dry vermouth, and sweet vermouth. 1 tsp. dry vermouth Give it a good shake, and strain into a 1 tsp. sweet vermouth cocktail glass. Bronx River Cocktail 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. sweet vermouth Pour in gin, sweet vermouth, lemon 1 ⁄4 oz. lemon juice juice, and simple syrup. Give it a good 1 tsp. simple syrup shake, and strain into a cocktail glass. 1 lemon twist Garnish with lemon twist. 76 Part 2: The Recipes Bronx Silver 1 1 1 ⁄2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 2 tsp. dry vermouth Pour in gin, dry vermouth, orange 1 ⁄4 oz. orange juice juice, and egg white. Give it a good 1 egg white shake, and strain into a sour glass. Cabaret 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄4 oz. dry vermouth Pour in gin, dry vermouth, and 1 ⁄4 oz. Benedictine Benedictine, and add bitters. Give it a 2 dashes bitters good shake, and strain into a cocktail 1 maraschino cherry glass. Garnish with maraschino cherry. Café de Paris 1 2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. pastis Pour in gin, pastis, heavy cream, and 1 ⁄2 oz. heavy cream egg white. Campari Campari. Give it a good shake, and strain into a cocktail glass. Caprice 1 1 2 ⁄2 oz. gin Fill a cocktail shaker ⁄2 full with ice. 1 ⁄2 oz. Now that the New Year’s celebrations are over, allow me to elaborate on what could be possibly one of the most revolting drinking games I had ever taken part in. At some point in time or another, many of us, particularly those of us in our unwise years of youth have partaken in some silly drinking games, which invariably result in being gruesomely sick for the next two days vowing never to touch alcohol again. One such occasion I can remember all too well— sometime around 1987--when my father, two others and I decided to let loose for a very silly drinking game concocted by my father, a man not well known for being one who takes responsibility seriously. Suffice it to say, that this happened more than three decades ago, around the time I was eighteen or so, when we completed the gruelling renovation of an ocean-going fishing trawler, called Manitou Enterprise, which had been converted for passenger use. The drinking game he came up with had the innocent sounding name of Around the World in 80 Days, in which, not unlike Phileas Fogg in his hot air balloon travels around the world, you had to ‘travel’ around the world by drinking a wide mix of liquors, cocktails and spirits—no beer or wine--associated with each country starting from England going east around the globe eventually to return back to the start.

Not only do they give a large selection of Cocktails, but they publish the Index to their Reference Library. At first sight this may not appear to be anything out of the ordinary, but when one realises that at last our Bartenders, who mix the correct recipes, can definitely prove this to any doubting customer, and that the duplication of names can now be avoided by reference to the Index, we all ought to be grateful for the removal of two grievances— the doubt as to the correct recipe and the duplication of titles. Assuming you are using a pourer on your bottles, to measure 1/2 oz. of 1 Teaspoon 1/8 ounce liquor, count "1001... 1002 ... 1003" as you are pouring. After a while, you should be able to do it by eye. 1 Tablespoon 3/8 ounce To make highballs, fill glass two-thirds full of ice 1 Pony 1 ounce before adding liquor. Always pour liquor in before the mixer. Do not stir drinks containing carbonated 1 Jigger/Bar glass 1 1/2 ounces mixers. 1 Wineglass 4 ounces To make cocktails, lowballs, and other shaken or stirred drinks, fill shaker half-full of ice. For 1 Split 6 ounces lowballs, fill the glass about half-full of ice before pouring drink. 1 Cup 8 ounces Most shaken drinks which contain light cream can also be made as blended drinks, substituting Metric Conversions vanilla ice cream for the light cream. 1 fluid ounce 29.573 milliliters To make blended drinks, first fill blender half-full of ice. If necessary, add more ice as you are blending. 1 quart 9.4635 deciliters Always keep fruit juices and other mixers refrigerated.
