Paul Menzel* *Past President President’s Message by Cara Gamberdella 2016 Welcome to the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s 49th celebration of athletic accomplishment. Last year we shook things up a bit and divided this celebration into two events – the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, where we honor past athletes, coaches and community leaders, and An Evening with the Athletes, where we

honor our current high school and college Athletes of the President’s Year, scholarship recipients, special awards and Coaches of the Year. The attendees at both events, as well as our coaches, athletic directors and athlete families, were so happy with our format last year, as well as the more intimate environment of both events, that we are thrilled to continue these two special nights and a week of Cara Gamberdella celebration now and for many years in the future.

The SBART is honored to welcome the 2016 SBART Hall of Fame class. We are inducting five outstanding athletes and one very deserving coach. The athletes represent a cross-section of sports and have excelled nationally on the collegiate and professional stages; and the coach has touched countless young athletes, including future Major Leaguers, in his over 43 years in the dugout and on the field.

The 2015-16 athletic year has been a great one. If you have attended any of our Monday Press Luncheons at Harry’s, you know that our high school and college student-athletes and coaches have been celebrating great successes both on and off the field all year.

The SBART would like to extend a special “Congratulations” to the Laguna Blanca Girls’ Message Volleyball team on their CIF Championship and State Championship appearance and Message to the Santa Barbara High School Boys’ Basketball Team on their CIF Championship. We also honor all of our teams and individuals who made it to the playoffs and beyond.

I am honored to have served the first of a two-year appointment as the SBART Board President. I extend a very sincere “thank you” to all of our very generous sponsors and members. Additionally, deep appreciation for all of the hard-working members of the SBART Board of Directors. The SBART has no paid staff; we are truly a “working board” with countless committee meetings, luncheons and long hours spent, coupled with the financial generosity of our sponsors and members, to keep the SBART mission moving forward. Last, but not least, a very hearty “thank you” to our local sports media for covering our luncheons, working together to honor our student-athletes with weekly and end-of-year awards and for publically sharing all of the great sports stories from our high schools and colleges each and every day.

As a former high school teacher, I know that student-athletes learn lessons on the field and on the court that translate into academic success, social confidence and lifelong skills in teamwork, discipline, organization and goal-setting. The Round Table plays an important part in reminding all of these students that they are doing the right thing. Additionally, the camaraderie the SBART helps build among our local coaches, athletes, press and community encourages many of our athletes to give back to the athletic community for many years after their playing years are over.

Thank you to all of you in attendance tonight for showing your support for our local student-athletes, coaches, community leaders, sports media and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. 2016

Almost five decades ago, Jerry Harwin and Caesar Uyesaka sipped coffee at Caesar’s Restaurant, talking about the need for a sports group in Santa Barbara that could help the local athletic community in times of need. After Jerry and Caesar shared a couple more coffee breaks together, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table was born. Its motto: The advancement and betterment of all sports and athletics in the greater Santa Barbara area.

The SBART got off to a fast start. Its first organizational meeting was held at Santa Barbara’s East Beach on January 25, 1968. Hundreds of people attended this meeting, and over 200 joined that evening as Charter Members.

The SBART’s first annual banquet was held at Santa Barbara City College onJune 22, 1968. Through membership dues, contributions, fundraising events and local foundations, the Round Table has raised more than $2 million for local athletics.

Harry’s Plaza Café was the site of the SBART’s first press luncheon held on September

Founders Founders 14, 1970. The luncheons, initiated by the new president, Bill Bertka, were similar to a “Monday Morning Club.” All area schools were represented by the head coaches of the sports in season. For over four decades the SBART luncheons have been held at Harry’s every Monday, attended by standing-room-only crowds.

Since its first meeting back in 1968, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table has helped thousands of individuals and organizations by raising funds to support their athletic programs. The Round Table is proud to help student-athletes at all levels compete in events they would otherwise not have been able to attend.

It is with our deepest regards and warmest thanks that we acknowledge and celebrate the vision and hard work of our founders, Caesar Uyesaka, Jerry Harwin and Bill Bertka.

It’s a long, long way from Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium to the NFL.

Chris Gocong put in the work and made his way down that long, difficult road to reach the big time. He played seven years in the NFL as a linebacker for the and the .

A quarterback and linebacker for the Warriors, Gocong made Carpinteria proud when he was taken by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft. After missing the ’06 season due to an injury, he made his debut on Sept. 9, 2007. He played three seasons with the Eagles before being traded to Cleveland. He ended his career with the Browns in 2012 after rupturing his Achilles tendon.

Fame Gocong was a force on the field and in the weight room at Carpinteria.

“Chris’s natural strength and explosiveness were phenomenal,” said Carpinteria assistant football coach and head track coach Van Latham. “Our weight room has never seen the amount of weight moved as when Chris and teammate Noah Bryant were here. It was a treat.”

Gocong earned All-CIF honors in football and track in 2000 and 2001 and was named All-State in football in 2001.

He won a CIF-Southern Section title in the discus.

“With Chris’s strength and explosiveness, throwing heavy objects was also a natural for him. He didn’t start throwing until his sophomore year but it was only a year later he became a CIF champion,” said Latham.

Hall of He played at Cal Poly and developed into an outstanding defensive player. In 2005, he was named a unanimous All-American and was recipient of the as college football’s best I-AA defensive player. In his college career, he recorded 212 tackles and set a NCAA career-record with 42 sacks for minus 284 yards. His 61.5 stops for losses of 330 yards rank fourth in Division 1-AA history.

Next stop, the NFL.

“His ability to combine his great athletic ability and work ethic to maximize his potential and reach the highest level of sport is very gratifying as a coach,” Latham said. “It is a rare combination. You often get athletes who possess one or the other of these qualities but not both the way Chris did. It is also very satisfying that he graduated from Cal Poly with a degree in engineering.”

Gocong resides in Carpinteria with his wife, Amanda, and daughter, Layla. 2016 GARY PEARCE Outstanding Athlete

FRED WARRECKER Coach Inductee

Fred Warrecker is Santa Barbara’s Mr. Baseball. For 43 years, he ran the Santa Barbara High baseball program, producing five Major League players, countless collegiate players and, more importantly, respectful, disciplined young men. Respect is Warrecker’s mantra. The kids who played for him learned how to respect the game. They also learned the value of hard work and keeping things in balance. One of his favorite sayings is “Rock Steady.” When things are going great, or rockin,’ it’s important to keep an even keel, or be steady, and not let the success go to your head. His youngest son, Donny, who took over the reins of the Dons baseball program this season, follows that same approach. Baseball has played a big part in Warrecker’s family. Eldest son Wes is Donny’s assistant at SBHS, and Teddy, the second youngest, is an assistant at Cal Poly after 10 years of being head coach Fame at SBCC. Willy, the second oldest, is an orthopedic surgeon for the Oakland A’s and Cal-Berkeley athletics. Fred Warrecker started his baseball and coaching life in Santa Barbara in the mid-1950s at UCSB. He was named the team MVP as a senior. He also played for the Santa Barbara Foresters from 1957-60. After a stint in the U.S. Army, he returned to Santa Barbara and earned a second degree at UCSB in English Literature – his first is in Physical Education “because the line was shorter to register,” he jokes. Warrecker started his teaching and coaching career at Dolores School before moving to Bishop Diego, where he coached football, basketball and baseball. Santa Barbara High principal Gene Snyder hired him in 1970, and he coached alongside local legends Sam Cathcart, Mike Moropoulos, Chuck Sylvester, Lito Garcia and Craig Moropoulos. He had a 41-game winning streak as the freshman football coach for the Dons. He was part of Sylvester’s staff with the baseball team and was handed the head coaching

Hall of reins in 1972. His teams won 615 games, 13 Channel League titles and made 22 CIF playoff appearances in more than four decades of wearing the Dons uniform. He guided the Dons to the CIF Finals in 2000. Players from his program who made it to the Major Leagues include Jesse Orosco, Ryan Spilborghs, Virgil “Matt” Vasquez, Dylan Axelrod and Cord Phelps. Fred and his wife Marcia are the proud parents of six sons: Wes, Willy, Jonathan, Tony, Teddy and Donny. Russ Hargreaves Memorial Award LITO GARCIA 2016 Lito Garcia, Principal of Santa Barbara Junior High School, is recognized for his ongoing efforts to provide organized, after- school sports programs in Santa Barbara junior high schools, where for the past three years he has overseen the SB Unified School District Junior High After-School Sports Program.

Under Garcia’s leadership, the Santa Barbara School District provides after school sports for students at Goleta, La Cumbre, La Colina and Santa Barbara Junior High Schools. Over 850 youth participate annually in six sports including: basketball, soccer, volleyball, flag football, lacrosse, track and field and board games. The SBUSD Junior High After-School Sports Program is a collaboration among the SBUSD, the City of Santa Barbara Parks

and Recreation Department and the City of Goleta. Special

Garcia’s passion is working with junior high school age youth, understanding it is a critical time in their lives. He enjoys helping students decide who they want to become and directing them in their path. Although at a slower pace, you may still find Garcia jumping into the occasional lunch time or P.E. class dodge ball, soccer or basketball game.

Garcia has worked for the Santa Barbara Unified School District for 22 years – six years asa teacher, 11 years as an Assistant Principal and the past five years as Principal.

Russ Hargreaves was a dedicated member of the Santa Barbara Recreation Department. He spent a lifetime creating opportunities for others to enjoy the benefits of recreational activities. He loved jogging and was committed to total body fitness. He knew that a healthy mind and body were the first steps to a happy and productive life. This award is given to a person recognized by the Parks &

Recreation Department as a leader in maintaining quality sports programs Awards R.F. MacFarland Memorial Trophy Awards JOHN DVORAK John Dvorak co-founded Presidio Sports with Blake Dorfman in 2008 and operated the Santa Barbara sports website for nearly eight years. The site posted more than 22,000 local sports articles, 5,000 images, and 500 videos during its lifespan. He moved with his family from Newport Beach to Santa Barbara at age 3 and was soon playing in local AYSO, PONY Baseball, and Santa Barbara Boys & Girls Club basketball leagues. He attended Montecito Union Elementary School and Cate School. Dvorak studied print journalism at New York University, witnessing the World Trade Center fall on 9/11, which was the first day of school during his senior year. After living in both Vail, Colo. and on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, he returned to Santa Barbara and worked in the sports department of the Santa Barbara News- Press from 2006 to 2008 before launching his internet business. “Even though we had zero business experience, Blake and I felt like we could create a better way to deliver local sports news to Santa Barbara in the form of a website,” Dvorak said. “More stories, more photos, video highlights, reader interaction, scores the same night instead of having to wait until next morning. “We were able to do that with a tiny, tiny budget in large part because of the financial sacrifice made by Blake, myself and Barry Punzal.”

R.F. MacFarland was one of the founders of Semana Nautica in 1936. This award is given annually to the person or organization who best exemplifies community leadership in the area of sports and athletics. It is sponsored by The City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department, local media and the Semana Nautica Association. After a stand-out collegiate career as an All-American high jumper at Cal State Northridge, McDonald saw multiple top-15 finishes in the USA National Championships in the high jump. After retiring from the high jump to have a baby girl in 1993, she picked up the pole vault and became one of the top pioneer female pole-vaulters in the United States. In 1996, McDonald was ranked 7th in the US and qualified as a finalist in the first-ever women’s pole vault in the 1996 Olympic Trials in Atlanta. In 1999, McDonald made an attempt at qualifying for Olympic Trials in the high jump at age 37.
