Independent Christian churches go way back to 1901 when some 20,000 people walked, drove their wagons or rode horses to a camp meeting revival near Paris, Ky. It’s not hard to picture the crowds of early settlers, horses and wagons in the fields surrounding a rustic church building. They gathered around cooking fires and lit torches for evening services. Crowds were a mix- ture of ordinary people—rich, poor, black and white, slaves and free, educated and illiterate from all denominations. They traveled to hear the preaching of Barton Warren Stone, who pleaded with people to just follow Jesus and live according to the Bible instead of a denomination. Preaching continued for several days, and in those simple, outdoor meetings, something spec- tacular happened. More than 3,000 people decided to follow Christ and were baptized. Denominational barriers crumbled as people decided to just be Christians and meet together in churches that follow the New Testament.
