Dr. Caner Enver ÖZYURT Bu çalışma, 2002-2003 balıkçılık sezonunda kuzeydoğu Akdeniz’in Türkiye kıyılarında yer alan Karataş açıklarında gerçekleştirilmiştir. Dip trolü çekimleri aylık periyotlarla 0-20m, 20-50m ve 50-100m derinlik katmanlarından birer saatlik olmak üzere yapılmıştır. Örnekleme dönemi boyunca toplam olarak 90 balık, 15 kabuklu ve 5 kafadan bacaklı türüne rastlanmıştır. Toplam 24 adet trol çekimi sonucunda 631403.89g materyal elde edilmiş olup; ortalama CPUE değeri 26308.5g saat-1 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Derinlik katmanları itibariyle en düşük ve en yüksek CPUE değerlerine 13544.80g saat-1 ve 33319.80g saat-1 sırasıyla 50-100m ve 20-50m derinlik katmanlarında rastlanmıştır. Aylar itibariyle en yüksek CPUE değerine eylül ayında (66756.30g saat-1) rastlanmış olup; bu değer eylül ayında itibaren sürekli düşüş göstererek, en düşük değer 12478,50g saat-1 ile mart ayından elde edilmiştir. Toplam av içerisinde balıkların %79.10’luk bir değerle birinci sırada yer aldığı; bunu %13.73 ile kabukluların ve %7.17’lik bir değerle de kafadan bacaklıların izlediği belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca elde edilen toplam biyokütlenin %38.68’ini ıskarta türlerin oluşturduğu saptanmıştır. Toplam avın tür sayısı olarak %18.90’ının ve biyokütle olarak ise, %26.66’sının lesepsiyen balıklardan oluştuğu tespit edilmiştir. Ana av içerisinde %19.48’lik bir değerle Mullus barbatus’un ilk sırada yer aldığı; bunu sırasıyla Charybdis longicollis (%15.98) ve Saurida undosquamis’in (%15.56) izlediği belirlenmiştir. Bazı türler için belirlenmiş olan seçicilik parametreleri sonucunda bölgedeki türlerin aşırı avcılık baskısı altında olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Ayrıca Mullus barbatus ve Upeneus pori ile ilgili yapılan değerlendirmeler sonucu balıkçılık sezonunun kasım ayında açılmasının bölge balıkçılığına yararlar sağlayacağı sonucuna varılmıştır. Prof. Caner Enver ÖZYURT This study was carried out during 2002-2003 fishing season off the Karatas located along the Northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The deep trawl net was operated by monthly sampling interval with one-hour haul duration in 0-20m, 20-50m and 50-100m depth ranges. During the study period, on the basis of species; a total of 90 fishes, five cephalopods, and 15 crustaceans were caught. Total weight of marine organisms obtained from 24 deep trawl operations were 631403.89g and its mean CPUE value was calculated as 26308.5±18954.2g hour-1. Minimum and maximum CPUE values for 50-100m and 20-50m depth ranges were determined 13544.80g hour-1 and 33319.80g hour-1 respectively. During the study period the maximum CPUE value was obtained in September (66756.30g hour-1) and this value decreased continuously to 12478.50g hour-1 in March. Fishes represented the major proportion with respect to the total catch (79.10%), followed by crustaceans (13.73%) and cephalopods (7.17%). In addition, on average 37.9% of the total catch was discarded. Number of lessepsian fish species consisted of %18.9 of total fish species, and lessepsian proportion of total fish biomass were estimated as 26.66%. In the main catch, Mullus barbatus was the most abundant species with the proportion of %19.48 and followed by Charybdis longicollis (%15.98) and Saurida undosquamis (%15.56). Selectivity parameters for some fish species indicated that fish populations inhabiting in the study area have been under fishing pressure. In addition, some analysis were conducted by using Mullus barbatus and Upeneus pori, and found that, if the fishing season opens in November, it would be beneficial for both regional fish populations and fisheries. The upper Holocene sedimentary sequence (C) is characterized by stratified (simple to complex) to chaotic reflection configurations produced by the development of a prograding wedge of terrigenous sediment. Particular occurrences of slope- and front-fill facies and the lack of a sharp boundary, which has, however, been observed on the western shelf of this bay, between the Early Holocene and latest Pleistocene deposits are related to possible movement of underlying deposits due to local gravity mass movements or synsedimentary tectonics due to adjustment of the underlying evaporites in adjacent basin. The maximum thickness of the topmost sequence C is associated with the Tarsus– Seyhan delta, which lies to the northeast of the area and is prograding along the shelf.

A total of 153 crustacean taxa were found. Of the specimens identified at species level, 93 species were distributed in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, 12 in the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, and 4 in the cosmopolitan waters of the oceans. Three crustacean assemblages were distinguished according to the habitat types and eutrophication levels of the study sites: 1) the crustacean community of the eutrophic regions was dominated by decapods and characterized by high biomass, low faunistic characters, and high nutrient concentrations; 2) the assemblage of the bottom, vegetated with a meadow, exhibited well-diversified assemblages mainly composed of amphipod species with high faunistic characters, low biomass, and dissolved oxygen content; and 3) the assemblage of the nonvegetated undisturbed soft bottom was associated with the sedimentary parameters along the bottom depths (10–25 m, 50–100 m, and 150–200 m).

    NESciences, 2018, 3 (1): 45-53 - RESEARCH ARTICLE - The effects of age and individual size on metal accumulation of Lagocephalus sceleratus (Gmelin, 1789) from Mersin Bay, Turkey Deniz Ayas1*, Ali Rıza Köşker2 1Faculty of Fisheries, Mersin University, Mersin, Turkey 2Faculty of Fisheries, Çukurova University, Adana, Turkey Abstract In this study, heavy metal levels in muscle and liver tissues of different age groups of Lagocephalus sceleratus caught in the Mersin Bay were investigated. Six different age groups were determined among fishes caught using commercial trawlers from the Mersin Bay. The lengths of fish were measured between 17 cm and 68 cm, the weights were measured between 265 g and 3955 g. Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Chromium (Cr) and Arsenic (As) levels were investigated using ICP- MS. The heavy metal concentrations in the liver and muscle tissues in L. sceleratus were found to be As>Cr>Cd>Pb and As>Cr>Pb>Cd, respectively. It was observed that with the increased ages of pufferfish, the levels of heavy metals determined in both muscle and liver tissues were increased. Although a large body of knowledge has been generated, research efforts have been inconsistently allocated across geographic areas, species and topics. Significant gaps still exist, ranging from the most fundamental aspects, such as the distribution of major nesting sites and the total number of clutches laid annually in the region, to more specific topics like age at maturity, survival rates and behavioural ecology, especially for certain areas (e.g. south-eastern Mediterranean). These gaps are particularly marked for the green turtle. The recent positive trends of nest counts at some nesting sites may be the result of the cessation of past exploitation and decades of conservation measures on land, both in the form of national regulations and of con- tinued active protection of clutches.

The order of average heavy metal concentrations in carapace meat samples in both male and female species was Zn>Fe >Cu>Al>Mn>Cr>Pb. From the obtained results, the levels of some metals such as Cu, Zn, and Fe were higher than the acceptable values for human consumption designated by various health organizations. The comparison of our results with previous studies showed that blue swimming crab (Portunus segnis) have been contaminated with heavy metals. The occurrence of high levels of Cu, Zn, and Fe in the aquatic environment is thought to be a result of industrial and maritime traffic activities in Mersin Bay. When I worked on my first turtle beach in Georgia (U.S.A.), “Turtle Boy” was my actual job title. Like it or not, that moniker has stuck with me for decades. I’m not complaining, because it provides me with a perfect opening to start a dialogue about my favorite topic. The conversations usually begin with a litany of queries: “How old do turtles get?” “Do they migrate?” “Where do the baby turtles go?” “Are turtles endangered?”—and other frequently asked questions that many in our community encounter daily. As a handy tool to prepare us for such questions, this volume of SWOT Report introduces a new section called “FAQs about Sea Turtles” (p. 36), in which we ask experts some of the common questions that are often not so easy to answer. When the questions we are asked go beyond the curious mysteries and basic natural history traits of sea turtles, they sometimes touch on more profound issues such as: “Does it really matter if we have sea turtles on our planet? After all, the dinosaurs went extinct, and here we are”; or “Now that the status of many sea turtles appears to be improving, isn’t your job done?“; or “Aren’t there more important species to worry about?” Such questions give us the amazing opportunity to explain why our work as sea turtle girls and guys is so globally important.
