The fact that much of our solo literature was written for the natural horn does not invalidate our performances of it on the modern double horn. However, in order to present the music correctly, we must be aware of the development of the horn and historical context. In this document, I explore four pieces from different points in horn history. I assert the reasons each composer wrote the way he did by considering the physical makeup of the horn at the time, the expectations of form, the specific horn players composed for, and the composer's intent. This document accompanies a recital given on April 13, 2014 at the Doudna Fine Arts Center at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. 2 1: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 3 in Ejlat Major, K. 447 The Physical Horn, Performance Practice, and Idiomatic Writing In the eighteenth century, the horn was not a favored solo instrument. Valves would not be adopted until about 1840, and so the horn was simply a coil of brass. It was severely limited. In the 1780s, Mozart wrote four significant horn concertos that are standard repertoire for any advanced horn player today. In all four concertos, he wrote idiomatically for the natural horn, carefully working around its limitations. I will use Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 3, K. 447, as an example. The natural horn player changes the key of his instrument by switching crooks. The system of crooks was invented in 1753 by Anton Joseph Hampel. 1 A crook is a removable piece of tubing that is inserted in the horn to change the length of the instrument, therefore changing the horn's key. Crooks also alter the timbre and response of the horn. Mozart wrote in the key of E flat. The E-flat crook is an ideal choice because it has the best intonation and the smoothest tone.2 Mozart wrote in this key for the horn player despite the fact that E flat is not the most desirable key for the string orchestra. Mozart was mindful of the harmonic series when he wrote his melodies. The open natural horn can only sound the notes on the harmonic series. This is also why horn parts appear in so many transpositions: it was a help to the natural hornist, who needed to know where the notes fit in the harmonic series. On today's valve horn, transpositions other than F require the hornist to transpose. 3 F ~r qr f 2= J r iJ J J ~r r F r •r r Q w II 12 14 15 1(1 3 2 '.l 4 5 6 7 :!( ·~ Figure 1: The harmonic series Every note in between the ones shown in the Figure 1 is accomplished by lip bending or by fully or partially stopping the horn with the hand. The technique of hand-stopping was codified by Anton Joseph Hampel around 1750.4 The goal of natural horn players was to achieve a timbre that is as homogenous as possible - to make the muted notes sound like the open ones.5 To minimize this difficulty and to capitalize on the good tone of the open horn, Mozart wrote his melodies to fit closely into the harmonic series, using the open tones as much as possible. This can be seen by examining the horn's opening theme in the first movement. In order to illustrate the relationship to the harmonic series and to provide for easier discussion of stopped and open notes, I have provided the notes that the horn player reads in Figure 2.

There are, in addition, some fragments indicating that Mozart had in mind at least two more concertos. All of these worksw stem from Mozart's years in Vienna from 1781 to the end of his life. Mozart sketched out the Rondo KV 371 on March 21,178 1, five days after he had left Munich at the command of his patron, Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo, to join the court musicians of Salzburg in Vienna to give musical luster to the festivities in honor of the newly crowned emperor, Joseph 11. He must havecomposed thedraft of an opening allegro, KV 370b, for a horn concerto in E-flat major at about the same time. In all probability, the Rondo KV 371 formed its finale. The themes of this experimental concerto, KV370b+371, are completely characteristic of Mozart: the march-like open- ing of the first movement occurs frequently in the piano concertos and the rondo theme set in 214 time anticipates the second finale of Figaro (Ex. 1). No trace has been found of plans he probably had for a second movement. Example 1 The Allegro KV 370b In 1856, Mozart's son Carl Thomas (1784-1858), in connection with his father's 100th birthday, cut up a large part of this first movement and distributed the pieces as "Mozart relics." Today, 127 measures of this movement survive, in which, as in the Rondo, the horn part is fully worked out while the accompaniment is only partially indicated.

And even, what is an orchestra? Does the Morley Consort Lessons count as an orchestra? What about Gabrieli with a couple of brass choirs, or even four brass choirs, belting it out at each other across the nave of San Marco? Or the vast resources of the Striggio etc Royal Wedding and the Florentine Intermedii, which seem to have included the original four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie, or at least a group of musicians popping out of the pastry. I’m not sure that any of these count as orchestras. The Morley Consort Lessons are a chamber group playing at home; Gabrieli’s lot wasn’t really an orchestra; The Royal Wed- dings and so forth were a lot of small groups, of the usual renais- sance sorts, playing in turn. Where I am inclined to start is with the first major opera, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo. Even that tends to be the usual renaissance groups taking turn about, but they are all there in a coherent dra- matic structure, and they certainly add up to an orchestra.

    THE PHYSICALITY OF SOUND PRODUCTION ON ACOUSTIC INSTRUMENTS A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Tristan Rhys Williams School of Arts Brunel University September 2010 (funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council) Abstract This thesis presents practical research into sound production on instruments, working collaboratively with players, in order to build an understanding of the sounds available. I have explored the way in which instrumental technique can be extended in such a way as to function as the basis for musical material. The function of ‘figuration’ has also be brought into question, by employing seemingly primitive, residual material pushed to such a degree that it is possible to hear what happens underneath a gesture. Research in this area has been conducted by, among others, Helmut Lachenmann and Rebecca Saunders; I am drawn to the way their work highlights the tangible quality of sound. The exploration of the physicality of sound production inevitably encounters the problem that the finished work becomes a catalogue of extended techniques. My research has drawn on the work of these composers and has attempted to resolve this problem by exploring the way in which texture can suggest ‘line’ and the structural implications of sculpting self-referential material through angular and polarized divisions. This facilitates a Braille-like reading of a sound’s progress by foregrounding a non-thematic sound-surface of resonance and decay. This takes a positive and active approach to the problems of musical language, by questioning the functions and expectations put upon music. The possible solutions have been worked through in a series of works for mixed chamber ensembles, in order to investigate the palette possibilities of fusing instruments in intimate settings.

Daigle All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Carol Hayward, Advisor The purpose of this study was to determine novice middle school and high school band directors’ knowledge of techniques and pedagogy specific to the horn. Ten band directors currently teaching middle or high school band and who were in their first through fourth year of teaching were interviewed. Questions were derived from current brass methods textbooks and placed in one of the following six categories: (a) collegiate background; (b) teaching background; (c) embouchure, posture and right hand placement; (d) construction of single and double horns; (e) muted, stopped and miscellaneous horn pedagogy; (f) care and maintenance. Findings from this study indicate that novice middle and high school band directors have varying amounts of knowledge and expertise of the horn and, in general, are lacking fundamental knowledge of specific horn techniques. In addition, it appears that directors have more knowledge and understanding of concepts relating to the horn that are common to all brass instruments as opposed to concepts associated specifically with the horn. iv This thesis is dedicated to everyone who has helped inspire and motivate me to make music more than a hobby.
