Esimene terviklik nimestik parmlastest on koostatud H. Remmi poolt 1953. aastal ning neid andmeid ei ole 63. aasta jooksul uuendatud. Bakalaureusetöö eesmärkideks olid Eestis leidavate parmude liigilise koosseisu väljaselgitamine, nende uurimine ja kirjeldamine, illustreerimine fotodega ning parmude perekondade dihhotoomse ja interaktiivse määraja koostamine. Töö autor viis Eestis siiani kasutusel olevad parmlaste vananenud nimed kooskõlla valiidsete ning kogu maailmas kasutatavate nimedega. Määramiseks ja kirjeldamiseks koguti parmlaste valmikuid 2015. aastal juunist–septembrini ning samuti külastati parmlaste liigilise koosseisu välja selgitamiseks Eesti Maaülikooli ja Tartu Ülikooli zooloogilisi kogusid, kus leidus arvestatavalt siiani määramata materjali, mis määrati liigini. Töö tulemustes selgus, et laialdaselt kasutatava ja autoriteetse andmebaasi Fauna Europaea Eestis esinevate parmlaste nimestikus eksisteeris ainult 19 liiki, kellest kaks puuduvad ülejäänud allikate põhjal Eestist. Eesti Maaülikooli ja Tartu Ülikooli putukakogu lähemal uurimisel selgus aga, et lisaks H. Remmi poolt märgitutele, esineb Eestis veel üheksa liiki parmlasi kuid kogudest puudusid kolm parmlase liiki, kes esinevad Eestis Remmi (1953), Chvála et al. (1972) ja Olsufjevi (1977) andmetel. Kõikide andmete summeerimisel selgus, et Eestis on hetkeseisuga 36 liiki parmlasi. Analoogselt on hästi uuritud Eesti suurliblikate fauna pidevas muutumises: viimase paarikümne aastaga on Eestisse jõudnud üle 30 lõunapoolsema liigi ja kümne liigi puhul on täheldatud nende taandumist. Olukord, kus liikide tõendusmaterjali on vähe, nõuab kindlasti edasisi süvendatud uuringuid ja analüüsi. Selleks, et parmlaste täpsem liigiline koosseis kindlaks teha oleks vaja teostada mitmel järjestikusel aastal püüke Eesti eri paikadest, mis hõlmaksid endas nii saarte kui mandri osa. Samuti leiab autor, et töö edasiarendusena on vajalik koostada ka kõiki liike hõlmav interaktiivne määraja. See aitaks kiiremini ja lihtsamini Eestist leitud parme määrata ning teadvustaks nende olulisust laiemale üldsusele. The first comprehensive list of flies was compiled by H. Remm in 1953 and this data had not been updated in 63 years. The aims of this Bachelor’s thesis were to identify the horse fly species of Estonia, to examine and characterize the material, illustrate them with photographs and create a dichotomous and an interactive identification key for the genera of horse flies. Outdated horse fly names that were still being used in Estonia were coordinated with valid and globally used ones. The research author collected horse fly adults between June and September of 2015 to determine the species and describe them. The author also visited the zoological collections of the Estonian University of Life Sciences and the University of Tartu to identify the horse fly species therein. There was still a considerable amount of undetermined material at the universities, which was ascertained to species. During this work, it became evident that in Fauna Europaea, in the list of Estonian horse flies, there were only 19 species, two of which were not present in Estonia according to other sources. A closer examination of the zoological collections at the Estonian University of Life Sciences and at the University of Tartu revealed that, in addition to those indicated by H. Remm there are nine more species of horse flies in Estonia. However, there were still three species that were missing from the collections, which should be present in Estonia according to the data of Remm (1953), Chvála et al. (1972) and Olsufjev (1977). The summation of all the data showed that at the moment there are 36 species of horse flies in Estonia. Similarly, the large butterfly fauna, which is well–studied in Estonia, is constantly changing: in the last twenty years, more than 30 southern species have reached Estonia and ten species have started to retreat. The current situation where there is little evidence of species (being present), certainly requires further in–depth research and analysis. In order to identify all the local horse fly species, catches from different parts of Estonia, both on islands and mainland, should be conducted in several consecutive years. The author of the thesis finds that, to streamline the work, it is necessary to develop an interactive identification key which includes all species of horse flies in Estonia. This would help to identify horse fly species faster and more easily and would make the general public more aware of their importance. The aim of the Wild Species series is to provide an overview on which species occur in Canada, in which provinces, territories or ocean regions they occur, and what is their status. Each species assessed in this report received a rank among the following categories: Extinct (0.2), Extirpated (0.1), At Risk (1), May Be At Risk (2), Sensitive (3), Secure (4), Undetermined (5), Not Assessed (6), Exotic (7) or Accidental (8). In the 2010 report, 11 950 species were assessed. Many taxonomic groups that were first assessed in the previous Wild Species reports were reassessed, such as vascular plants, freshwater mussels, odonates, butterflies, crayfishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Other taxonomic groups are assessed for the first time in the Wild Species 2010 report, namely lichens, mosses, spiders, predaceous diving beetles, ground beetles (including the reassessment of tiger beetles), lady beetles, bumblebees, black flies, horse flies, mosquitoes, and some selected macromoths. The overall results of this report show that the majority of Canada’s wild species are ranked Secure.

    Insect Orders V: Panorpida & Hymenoptera • The Panorpida contain 5 orders: the Mecoptera, Siphonaptera, Diptera, Trichoptera and Lepidoptera. • Available evidence clearly indicates that the Lepidoptera and the Trichoptera are sister groups. • The Siphonaptera and Mecoptera are also closely related but it is not clear whether the Siponaptera is the sister group of all of the Mecoptera or a group (Boreidae) within the Mecoptera. If the latter is true, then the Mecoptera is paraphyletic as currently defined. • The Diptera is the sister group of the Siphonaptera + Mecoptera and together make up the Mecopteroids. • The Hymenoptera does not appear to be closely related to any of the other holometabolous orders. Mecoptera (Scorpionflies, hangingflies) • Classification. 600 species worldwide, arranged into 9 families (5 in the US). A very old group, many fossils from the Permian (260 mya) onward. • Structure. Most distinctive feature is the elongated clypeus and labrum that together form a rostrum. The order gets its common name from the gential segment of the male in the family Panorpodiae, which is bulbous and often curved forward above the abdomen, like the sting of a scorpion. Larvae are caterpillar-like or grub- like. • Natural history. Scorpionflies are most common in cool, moist habitats. They get the name “hangingflies” from their habit of hanging upside down on vegetation. Larvae and adult males are mostly predators or scavengers. Adult females are usually scavengers. Larvae and adults in some groups may feed on vegetation. Larvae of most species are terrestrial and caterpillar-like in body form. Larvae of some species are aquatic. In the family Bittacidae males attract females for mating by releasing a sex pheromone and then presenting the female with a nuptial gift.

E-mail: [email protected] Received: August 31, 2020 Accepted: September 26, 2020 doi:10.5296/jbls.v11i2.17806 URL: https://doi.org/10.5296/jbls.v11i2.17806 Abstract The distribution and species diversity of tabanids and stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans Linnaeus, 1758, in the research area, Hästhult (wood pasture) in Sweden, as well as the behavioral responses of biting flies to visual and olfactory cues were highlighted by this study. Beyond the control of tabanids and stable flies through the Nzi and Horse Pal traps that act as a surrogate host, this study sought to demonstrate the attractiveness of biting flies to these traps by comparing the results of the two periods in which the traps were unbaited and baited. The odor attractants, such as urine (a mixture of more than phenol) and acetone used to increase trap yields, made the difference to the Horse Pal and Nzi traps for S. calcitrans (L) because the number of flies caught was significantly higher. Through this study, Nzi trap with bait and Horse Pal trap with and without bait were tested for the first time as regards the tabanids and S. calcitrans (L) in Scandinavia. Surprisingly, the number of tabanids caught in the Nzi trap was equal in both situations with or without bait. The result underlined the idea that the Nzi trap manages to catch a large number of tabanids even in the absence of attractants.
