Institutional Support and Commitment to Continuous Improvement I.1. Identity & Self Assessment I.1.1. History Mission The APR must include the following: • A brief history of the institution, its mission, founding principles, and a description of how that is expressed in the context of 21st century higher education • A brief history of the program, its mission, founding principles, and a description of how that is expressed in the context of the 21st century architecture education. • A description of the activities and initiatives that demonstrate the program’s benefit to the institution through discovery, teaching, engagement, and service. Conversely, the APR should also include a description of the benefits derived to the program from the institutional setting. • A description of the program and how its course of study encourages the holistic development of young professionals through both liberal arts and practicum-based learning. Institution The University of Kentucky was established by the state of Kentucky in 1865 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of the Kentucky University. “Since its inception, the University of Kentucky has been more than a public research University; we have been home to the state’s greatest aspirations – an idea of a new and brighter tomorrow. We are a community of global scholars committed to academic excellence, collaborative scientific discovery, and undergraduate and graduate student engagement. With over 200 academic programs across 16 colleges and professional schools, our worldwide renowned faculty take a multi-disciplinary approach to serving our community and are the foundation of progress and purpose for our Commonwealth. We are a home away from home for a diverse community of students from all 120 Kentucky counties, each of the 50 states, and 115 countries worldwide. Values – The University of Kentucky is guided by its core values: Integrity Excellence Mutual Respect and Human Dignity Diversity and Inclusion Academic Freedom Shared Governance Work-life Sensitivity Civic Engagement Social Responsibility 6 University of Kentucky Architecture Program Report September 2012 The Board of Trustees has the full legal authority and responsibility for the governance of the University. The President is the chief executive officer. The President and Central Administration are responsible for University wide policies and planning as well as coordination of academic, student, business and administrative service. The provost is responsible for the operations of the academic programs, established University policies, procedures, and has broad discretion in planning and day to day decisions. Since the last visit, a new university president was named. Dr. Eli Capilouto, the previous provost of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, became the twelfth president of the University of Kentucky in 2011. Also since the last visit, the previous provost, in 2012, accepted the job to become the president of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Currently, the Dean of Pharmacy, Dr. Timothy Tracy is serving as the Interim Provost. One of the first actions taken by the President was to commission an outside study to address four fundamental questions confronting the university. The preliminary report can be reviewed at www.uky.edu/ President/HuronReports.edu. The finding of this report will form the foundation of a new strategic plan. As is the case at the college and school level, the active and engaged debates that are taking place within the academic community will energize and refresh the university community. We as an academic unit are participating, at the university level, as these dialogues move forward. Each year the Office of the Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness publishes the UK Factbook. The 2011-2012 edition, as well as previous editions, is located at http://www.uky.edu/IRPE/fast_facts/fact_ booklet.html. This document provides a statistical profile of the university. College The College of Design was established in January 2003, incorporating the School of Interior Design, the Department of Historic Preservation and the School of Architecture. The College of Architecture had its origins in the 1920’s as an architectural option in the College of Engineering. Professor Charles P. Graves joined the Civil Engineering faculty in 1958 charged with converting the architectural option to a professional degree program. The curriculum changed from a mathematical and applied science concentration to courses in the arts, science, humanities, architectural design and history. In 1960, the Board of Trustees established the Department of Architecture in the College of Engineering, with the understanding that the department would be granted autonomy upon accreditation. The first class to complete the new professional degree program graduated in 1964. The School of Architecture was established in 1965 with Professor Graves as Dean. That year, the program also received its first accreditation from the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The School became a college in 1967. As the College’s enrollment increased it moved to temporary off-campus quarters in the Reynolds Building, an old tobacco warehouse. In 1965, the program moved to the physics building, Pence Hall. Its conception is often attributed to human actors—the architects Kallmann McKinnell & Knowles and the competition jury that chose their design—and the intentions of character and resolve, articulated governance, and openness to civic life that they proposed on paper long before any building went up. These intentions have nearly always been described as abstract ideals removed from any particular political situation that may necessitate such “character and resolve.” There was not a word mentioned, either in the commission or in the architects’ statements, of the political nature of the civic project, nor the national and international tensions of the time—non-human actors that inevitably had a hand in the making of Boston City Hall, but have rarely been addressed.

Introduction The Mid 20th Century Architecture in New Hampshire Context: 1945‐1975 was prepared by Lisa Mausolf, Preservation Consultant, under contract for the New Hampshire Department of Employment Security. The context was prepared as mitigation for the sale of the Employment Security building at 32 South Main Street in Concord. The modern curtain wall structure was designed by Manchester architects Koehler & Isaak in 1958. A colorful landmark on South Main Street, discussion of the architectural significance of the building draws commentary ranging from praise “as an excellent example of mid‐ century Modern architecture and ideals of space, form, and function”1 to derision, calling it one of the ugliest buildings in Concord. The report focuses primarily on high‐style buildings, designed by architects, and excludes residential structures.

While on its surface this style seems inimical to New England architecture, a confluence of economic, political, and social forces rendered it aptly suited to the region at this pivotal time. Concrete buildings served not only functional purposes but also as monuments that both reflected and shaped public perceptions of New England.

The research is an examination into “how” dominant architectural institutions and their figureheads are undermined through the subversive collaboration of younger, unrecognised architects. By appropriating theories found in Jacques Derrida’s writings in philosophy, the thesis interprets the evolution of post World War II polemical architectural thinking as a series of political friendships. In order to provide evidence, the thesis involves the rewriting of a portion of modern architectural history, 1949-1987. Modern architectural history is rewritten as a series of three friendship partnerships which have been selected because of their subversive reaction to their respective establishments. They are English architects, Alison Smithson and Peter Smithson; South African born architect and planner, Denise Scott Brown and North American architect, Robert Venturi; and Greek architect, Elia Zenghelis and Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas. Crucial to the undermining of their respective enemies is the friends’ collaboration on subversive projects. These projects are built, unbuilt and literary. Warring publicly through the writing of seminal texts is a significant step towards undermining the dominance of their ideological opponents.

    The Half-Life of Buildings Are “great” buildings still great THETERM “instant classic” is often used to describe a new building, but how forty years later? long does architecture really last? Time can be cruel to bestselling authors (who today reads Thomas B. Costain or Grace Metalious?), hit movies (tried to watch “The Ten Commandments” lately?), and popular fashions (remember bell-bottom trousers and Nehru jackets?). Are build- ings immune? Perhaps the most graphic example of short-lived greatness currently in the news is Boston City Hall. In 1962, Boston held a national architectural competition for a new city hall, attracting 256 entries.
