State of California September 17, 2021 EMPLOYMENT DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT Labor Market Information Division Contact: Amanda Ha 745 Franklin Street (415) 749-2002 San Francisco, CA 94102 SAN FRANCISCO-REDWOOD CITY-SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO METROPOLITAN DIVISION (SAN FRANCISCO AND SAN MATEO COUNTIES) Professional and business services posted the largest month-over growth The unemployment rate in the San Francisco-Redwood City-South San Francisco MD was 4.8 percent in August 2021, down from a revised 5.1 percent in July 2021, and below the year-ago estimate of 9.1 percent. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 7.5 percent for California and 5.3 percent for the nation during the same period. The unemployment rate was 5.0 percent in San Francisco County, and 4.6 percent in San Mateo County. Between July 2021 and August 2021, the total number of jobs in the San Francisco-Redwood City-South San Francisco MD, which includes the counties of San Francisco and San Mateo, increased by 5,200 jobs to total 1,101,600 jobs. Professional and business services improved by 2,200 jobs. The majority of the growth came from professional, scientific, and technical services (up 1,600 jobs). Leisure and hospitality added 2,100 jobs, the lowest month-over increase since February 2021. Other industries that registered payroll advances were government (up 1,700 jobs) and other services (up 1,200 jobs). In comparison, private educational and health services (down 2,200 jobs) posted the largest month- over decrease among the major industries. Healthcare and social assistance (down 2,500 jobs) was responsible for the decline. Between August 2020 and August 2021, the total number of jobs in the counties of San Francisco and San Mateo increased by 62,900 jobs or 6.1 percent. Leisure and hospitality rose by 32,400 jobs or 45.2 percent. Food services and drinking places (up 27,700 jobs) was responsible for 85.5 percent of the total surge. Professional and business services posted a growth of 18,200 jobs. While professional, scientific, and technical services (up 15,800 jobs) and administrative, support, waste management, and remediation services (up 2,400 jobs) increased employment, management of companies and enterprises remained unchanged. Other services (up 7,500 jobs) experienced the largest year-over growth since August 2011 to August 2012. Government (down 6,000 jobs) lost the greatest number of jobs.
