Villarreal CF v Arsenal FC MATCH PRESS KIT El Madrigal, Villarreal Tuesday, 25 April 2006 - 20:45 CET Semi-finals - Matchday 12

In the three seasons since UEFA restructured the format of the UEFA Champions League by abolishing the second group stage, no team has progressed as far as Villarreal CF while scoring so few goals. However, the Spanish side must now add to their tally of eight strikes in the competition if they are to complete their fairy-tale debut by overcoming Arsenal FC to win a place in the final on 17 May.

Home struggles · Clubs playing at home first in the semi-final have not had things their own way in recent campaigns. Before this term, only three of the last ten UEFA Champions League semi-finals had produced a home win in the first leg. Of those home victors, just AS Monaco FC in 2003/04 and AC Milan last season made it to the final. Arsenal©s aim will be to improve that statistic as they defend a narrow advantage at El Madrigal.

· The odds may be against Villarreal, however, as in the 14 seasons since the UEFA Champions League was created, post-group only 16 teams have recovered from losing the first leg to win the tie.

Winning farewell · Kolo Touré©s first-half goal ± his first in 14 months since he struck against FC Bayern München in the first knockout round in February 2005 - gave Arsenal a winning farewell to their Highbury home in the last European game to be staged there before the summer move to a new stadium at nearby Ashburton Grove. It was not the worst result the Spanish visitors could have suffered but they know the difficulties they now face trying to reduce the deficit.

Nine clean sheets · Breaching the Londoners© defence has proved a task beyond their opponents in Arsenal©s last nine UEFA Champions League outings. Arsène Wenger©s men have not conceded a goal in 829 minutes and that magnificent sequence was rarely threatened at Highbury.

Goalless will do · For Arsenal to make their first UEFA Champions League semi-final a winning experience and give England a representative in the final for the second year running, they only need to replicate the result from the second-leg games in both the previous rounds. Against Real CF (home) and Juventus (away) the result was 0-0.

· But Villarreal ± attempting to follow Liverpool FC in becoming the second successive winners of the trophy who started their journey in the third qualifying round as well as the first team to reach the final in their debut campaign since Valencia CF in 1999/00 - will remember that in the quarter-finals they also trailed from the first match.

· That 2-1 defeat at FC Internazionale Milano came after Diego Forlán had shot the Spanish side ahead. At home they then pulled through with a 1-0 victory thanks to ©s second-half header which ensured a triumph on away goals. The full-back had also registered the equaliser at home in the first knockout round to enable ©s men to advance, again on away goals, at the expense of Rangers FC.

Two defeats · The San Siro loss was Villarreal©s only previous reverse in the competition. Their first term in the élite tournament has seen them remain unbeaten at El Madrigal and it is also a venue at which no English visitor has won.

· In the third qualifying round in August they overcame Everton FC 2-1 there to complete a 4-2 aggregate success and followed that by holding Manchester United FC to goalless draws home and away in the group stage.

· Before this season, Villarreal©s only meeting with Premiership opposition had come at home to Middlesbrough FC in last year©s UEFA Cup group stage when they recorded a 2-0 triumph.

Unbeaten at home · Villarreal have not lost in six home games in the current edition, including the third qualifying round. They have only conceded three goals in total, and never more than one a match.

Leading scorers · Arruabarrena©s two strikes make him joint-top scorer for the Primera División outfit ± who qualified after finishing third in Spain in 2004/05 - in the competition. Forlán and Juan Román Riquelme are also on two with the latter©s goals both coming from the penalty spot.

Recent form best · For this away match, Arsenal will be seeking to repeat the form of their last two trips to Spain when they recorded victories. In this season©s first knockout round, a 1-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu ± the first time English opposition had prevailed at Madrid - was secured by Thierry Henry©s solo goal. His tally in the tournament stands at five and assuming he plays in El Madrigal, he will be chasing his 50th European goal in his 102nd appearance in UEFA club competition.

· Henry also netted in the 2-0 home success against Juventus in the quarter-final with Cesc Fabregas getting the other.

Pirès the winner · Before the Madrid win, Arsenal©s last game in Spain had brought a 3-2 triumph at RC Celta de Vigo in the first knockout round of the 2003/04 tournament. Robert Pirès fired the winner after the hosts had twice cancelled out goals by Brazilian midfielder Edu.

· Arsenal©s previous six matches in that country in UEFA club competition had brought five straight defeats and a draw.

Unbeaten run · This term they are unbeaten in eleven games so far and have conceded just one goal away from home, Markus Rosenberg©s strike for AFC Ajax with 19 minutes remaining of the Matchday 2 fixture in the Amsterdam ArenA. That was the last time the Gunners© defence was breached.

Two final defeats · Arsenal twice lost in the UEFA Cup Winners© Cup final to Spanish sides. Valencia were victors in 1979/80 and Real Zaragoza triumphed in the 1994/95 showpiece. The latter defeat came at the Parc des Princes in Paris, host city for this year©s UEFA Champions League final.

· Rodolfo Arruabarrena made his half-century of appearances in UEFA club competition in the first leg at Highbury.

· Juan Román Riquelme is three matches away from his 50th appearance in UEFA club competition, meaning he cannot reach the milestone this season.

· Alessio Tacchinardi played his 100th game in UEFA club competition, and 75th in the UEFA Champions League, on Matchday 7. He is by far the most experienced player in the Villarreal squad.

· Tacchinardi extended his loan deal from Juventus for another season after the first leg in England.

· Tacchinardi has been on the losing side in three UEFA Champions League finals (1997, 1998 and 2003). He did enjoy success with Juve in the 1995/96 season but did not play in the final.

· Tacchinardi will miss the second leg after his caution at Highbury. It is his second suspension of the European season. However, Sebastián Viera will return after sitting out the trip to Highbury for similar reasons.

· Mariano Barbosa deputised in goal on Matchday 11. Before conceding at Highbury, he had played two UEFA Champions League matches this season, on Matchdays 4 and 5, and kept a clean sheet in both games.

· After their cautions against Arsenal last time, Guillermo Franco and Riquelme have joined and Juan Pablo Sorín in facing the threat of a one-match ban if they pick up a booking. Gonzalo is in a similar position but is ruled out through injury.

· Antonio Guayre turned 26 on 23 April.

· Only five different Villarreal players have found the net in the competition proper this season, with three players having scored twice - Arruabarrena, Riquelme and Diego Forlán. AC Milan have the same record while Arsenal have had eight scorers and FC Barcelona ten.

· This is the sixth time there are two Spanish teams in the semi-finals of the European Champion Clubs© Cup since 1955. The first time was in 1958/59 when Real Madrid CF and Club Atlético de Madrid participated. In 1959/60, it was Madrid and Barcelona. In 1999/00, Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia reached the semi-final stage and Madrid and Valencia went on to play the final. In 2000/01, again Madrid and Valencia were in the semis and Valencia progressed to the final.

· Villarreal have not only made history in reaching the semi-finals in their UEFA Champions League debut, but the town is also the second smallest to make it to this stage in the competition. Villarreal has 47,000 inhabitants and the only smaller town is Monte Carlo (AS Monaco FC), with 32,000.

· Villarreal have become the fifth Spanish team to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after Madrid, Barcelona, RC Deportivo La Coruña and Valencia.

· Villarreal's 2-0 league defeat by Real Sociedad de Fútbol on Saturday was only the second time they have been beaten without scoring at El Madrigal in the league this season, the other occasion was a 2-0 loss at the hands of FC Barcelona on 4 December.

· It was their fourth match in a row without victory, in all competitions, with their last win coming on 4 April in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg when FC Internazionale Milano were defeated 1-0 at El Madrigal.

· Both Real goals came inside the first 30 minutes of the match. Overall, in league play this season, Villarreal are at their most vulnerable in the first half, with 26 of the 34 goals they have conceded coming before half-time.

· Villarreal have only conceded eight goals in the second half of league matches this season, and none in the closing 15 minutes.

· To underline their strength in the closing stages, they have scored 19 of their 42 league goals in the last half-hour.

· César Arzo was the only player in the starting lineup for the visit of Real that began the game against Arsenal three days earlier.

· Óscar López Martínez played his first game for the Villarreal first team on Saturday, a year after the defender joined from Benidorm CD and playing regularly in the B team.

· Viera returned in goal in place of Mariano Barbosa after missing the last two league games against RC Deportivo La Coruña and FC Barcelona, as well as the first leg of the tie against Arsenal through suspension.

· The match against Real was the eighth time that the team has conceded two goals in a league game this season and they have not let in more than two in any one match throughout the campaign.

· It was the fourth league game that Villarreal have lost at home this term, while they have won seven and drawn six of their games in El Madrigal.

· Villarreal have only completed a league double, winning both home and away, against one team this season as they defeated RCD Espanyol in Barcelona and at El Madrigal.

· Manuel Pellegrini©s team have been beaten home and away by two different teams this season in the league as they have lost twice to RC Celta de Vigo and Barcelona.

· Villarreal failed to hit the target for the second consecutive time in the league, and the third time in all competitions, after Saturday©s defeat.

· Arsenal have not conceded a goal in any their last nine UEFA Champions League fixtures. The overall run stretches to a record 829 minutes.

· If Jens Lehmann does not let in a goal within four minutes at El Madrigal, it will be the longest personal run in terms of minutes played for a goalkeeper without conceding in the UEFA Champions League. AFC Ajax©s Edwin van der Sar went 658 minutes without conceding in successive games during the 1995/96 campaign. At the end of the first leg at Highbury, Lehmann had not been beaten in his previous 655 minutes.

· The record includes his last five consecutive games, along with his appearances on Matchday 3 and in the second leg of last season©s first knockout round against FC Bayern München. In the first leg against Bayern, Hasan Salihamidžić was the last player to score against him in European competition, when the Bosnia-Herzogovnian midfielder found the net in the 65th minute.

· Van der Sar kept six straight clean sheets in 1995/96 as did József Wandzik of Panathinakos FC in the same campaign. AC Milan©s Dida went one better in 2004/05, although the run included the second leg of their quarter-final against FC Internazionale Milano which was abandoned in the 72nd minute. Lehmann will set a new individual record of eight successive clean sheets in as many appearances if he is not breached at El Madrigal.

· No Arsenal player has played every minute of their eleven UEFA Champions League games this season.

· Cesc Fabregas is the only Arsenal player to have played some part in each of the eleven matches.

· José AntonioReyes had featured in the first ten games but was suspended for the first leg at Highbury.

· Kolo Touré and Mathieu Flamini are in danger of missing the final, should Arsenal make it, as both need one more yellow card for a ban.

· Henry remains a goal away from 50 in UEFA club competition.

· Ashley Cole is six matches away from his 50th game in the UEFA Champions League, having never played any other UEFA club competition games.

· Aside from sitting out on Matchday 1, Flamini has not missed a minute for Arsenal in this season.

· Theo Walcott, yet to make his European debut, turned 17 last month. If he finds the net against Villarreal, he will become the youngest scorer in UEFA Champions League history.

· Henry is on the UEFA Champions League top scorers© list for this season with five goals. Andriy Shevchenko leads the way with nine.

· Reyes has been fouled more times (44) than any other player in the UEFA Champions League this season.

· Arsenal©s 1-1 home draw against Tottenham Hotspur FC on Saturday denied them the opportunity to move within a point of their north London rivals in the race for the final UEFA Champions League place.

· It was the penultimate game at the club©s Highbury home. From next season, they will be playing at a new stadium at nearby Ashburton Grove.

· The Gunners have a game in hand on Tottenham but if Martin Jol©s men win their remaining two fixtures they will finish in fourth place in the Premiership regardless of Arsenal©s remaining league results. Even if Tottenham win one and draw the other of their last two games, Arsène Wenger©s men will need to win all three of their remaining matches to leapfrog their London neighbours.

· In nine full seasons in charge, Wenger has always guided Arsenal to the top two in the Premiership, but fourth place is the best he can hope for this time around.

· Should Tottenham finish in fourth place, Arsenal could still qualify for a place in next season©s UEFA Champions League at the expense of their rivals, however, by winning this season©s competition in Paris on 17 May. They would then go straight into next season©s group stage as holders, and Tottenham would enter the UEFA Cup.

· Henry©s late equaliser was his 23rd Premiership goal of the season, making him the league©s top goalscorer, two ahead of Manchester United FC striker Ruud van Nistelrooij. His fifth goal in ten appearances against Tottenham also meant that a Frenchman has scored 21 times in the last 16 north London derbies.

· Arsenal are at their most dangerous in the last 15 minutes of league matches, having scored 18 of their 57 Premiership goals between the 76th and 90th minutes.

· Henry is in third place in the Premier League©s all-time scorers list with 160, trailing Alan Shearer©s 260 and Andrew Cole©s 185. Newcastle United FC captain Shearer will have no more opportunity to boost his tally as a knee injury has brought his career to an end.

· Arsenal remain unbeaten against Tottenham in 14 attempts but the 1-1 draw ended a six-match home winning run against their old rivals. It also ended a six-match winning streak against all comers at Highbury that began on 12 March, when Liverpool were defeated 2-1.

· Arsenal have not finished outside the Premiership top five in ten years, and have only concluded three of the 13 Premier League seasons outside the top four (tenth in 1993, 12th in 1995 and fifth in 1996).

· Arsenal maintained their average of scoring a goal a point. Henry©s late strike was his side©s 58th goal of the season and a feat which earned the Gunners 58 Premiership points.

· Arsenal have scored in each of their last eight home league games.

· They have only scored once in their last three away games, in all competitions, and not won in any of them.

· Henry, Fabregas, Emmanuel Eboué and Fredrik Ljungberg were all rested for the Tottenham match after playing in the 1-0 victory against Villarreal the previous Wednesday, although the first three of the aforementioned players all made appearances as second-half substitutes.

· Philippe Senderos suffered a knee injury and is doubtful for the trip to Villarreal on Tuesday. Should he fail to win his fitness race in time, Sol Campbell will be hoping to have recovered in time from a recent operation on a broken nose sustained against Portsmouth on 12 April.

· Making their first appearance in the group stage proper against the side with the most matches under their belt in the competition, namely Manchester United FC with 113 before Matchday 1, did not deter Villarreal as they held their English rivals at bay to record a creditable scoreless draw.

· They would remain unbeaten throughout the group stage, winning twice and drawing on four occasions to top the standings, two points clear of SL Benfica despite scoring only three times. Villarreal©s two victories came away to Benfica (1-0) on Matchday 4 and at home to LOSC Lille Métropole (1-0) in the final series of matches. Three of their other matches ended in scoreless draws, the other result being a 1-1 stalemate at home to Benfica. Despite their lack of firepower, Villarreal conceded only once from their six outings and at no stage in the group stage did the Spanish side trail their opponents.

· In the first knockout round, Villarreal advanced on away goals against Rangers FC after the sides shared six goals. The opening leg in Glasgow ended in a 2-2 draw with the Spanish side pegged back on two occasions. Indeed, Rangers took the lead in the return leg through Peter Lùvenkrands after 12 minutes as Villarreal fought against a deficit for the first time in the competition. However, four minutes into the second half, they restored parity and booked their place in the last eight thanks to Rodolfo Arrubarrena©s equaliser.

· The Spanish side then overcame a first leg deficit to beat FC Internazionale Milano on away goals in the quarter-finals. In the first leg, substitute Obafemi Martins helped Inter to an impressive 2-1 victory at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium. Martins came on just after the half-hour but it was after the restart that he found his feet, scoring what proved to be the decisive goal on 54 minutes. The win looked unlikely early on as Diego Forlán gave Villarreal a shock lead in the first minute, but Adriano equalised six minutes later before the night was to belong to fellow forward Martins. But in the return, Villarreal full-back Rodolfo Arruabarrena (58) headed the crucial second-half goal that was the culmination of a barnstorming display, notably from Juan Román Riquelme, Forlán and Alessio Tacchinardi, during which the Italian team came under constant pressure as the Spanish side advanced on away goals.

Key facts · Villarreal have played 59 matches overall in UEFA club competition, winning 28, drawing 22, losing nine while scoring 77 times and conceding 37 goals.

2005/06 season · In the 2004/05 season, Arsenal trailed Chelsea by 12 points in the English Premiership, finishing second ahead of Manchester United FC by a further six points. The second-placed finish provided Arsenal with an automatic spot in the group stage, extending their sequence of never having played a qualifying round match in the competition.

· Arsenal advanced to the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage as one of the 16 automatic qualifiers.

· With five victories from their opening five engagements, Arsenal qualified with some ease for the knockout stages. The only blemish to their record came on Matchday 6 when they were held to a scoreless draw by AFC Ajax. Otherwise, the record books show ten goals scored and two conceded from their six matches.

· A daunting trip to the Santiago Bernabéu to face Real Madrid CF was the Gunners© reward for topping their group, but a Thierry Henry goal separated the sides before they battled out a scoreless draw in the return leg in the English capital, thus providing Arsenal with their third trip to the quarter-finals in the last six years.

· Arsenal then reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time in their history after a goalless draw away to Juventus earned them a 2-0 aggregate win. The Gunners had earlier won in London as goals in each half from Cesc Fabregas (40) and Thierry Henry (69) gave them a two-goal advantage that Juve were unable to breach.

Key facts · To date, the Gunners have played 79 matches in the UEFA Champions League, winning 36, drawing 22 and losing 21. In that time, Arsenal have scored 111 goals and conceded 83.

· Their overall European Champion Clubs© Cup record (including all qualifying round matches) reads, played 89, won 41, drawn 23 and lost 25 with 132 goals scored and 93 conceded.

· Overall, Arsenal have played 143 matches in UEFA club competition with 68 wins, 38 draws and 37 losses. In those matches, they have scored 225 times while conceding 147 goals.

Competition facts

· UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF tied Manchester United FC©s record of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United©s streak came to an end this season, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. Regarding other teams in this season©s knockout phase, both AC Milan and Juventus have qualified for the last four knockout stages, one ahead of Arsenal FC, FC Bayern München, Chelsea FC and .

Last eight: Milan have advanced to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League in each of the past four seasons, winning the 2002/03 final against Juventus but losing the 2004/05 showpiece to Liverpool FC. Both finals went to penalty shoot-outs. Milan were eliminated at the quarter-final stage in the 2003/04 season by RC Deportivo La Coruña. Lyon are making their third consecutive trip to the quarter-final stage, but on the previous two occasions the French side have ended on the losing side: in 2003/04 to eventual competition winners FC Porto and then in 2004/05 to PSV Eindhoven.

Semi-finals: Semi-final opponents Arsenal and Villarreal CF are appearing in the last four of the competition for the first time in their history. Barça have qualified for the UEFA Champions League semis on three occasions, their only success coming in the 1993/94 season when defeating Porto 3-0. The Catalan side then faced Milan in the final, only to lose 4-0. Barcelona will be looking to avenge that defeat as they meet Milan in this season©s semis, but will be wary of the fact that the Italian side have reached this stage of the competition on five occasions before this season and they have yet to be denied a place in the final.

No qualifiers: Arsenal are the only club in this season©s knockout phase never to have played a UEFA Champions League qualifying-round match. To date, all of Arsenal©s matches have been restricted to the group stage and beyond.

Debutants: Villarreal CF are the only debutants to advance to this season©s knockout phase as FC Artmedia, FC Thun, Real Betis Balompié and all failed to advance beyond the group stage. To date, three debutants have won the competition (1992/93, first UEFA Champions League final), AFC Ajax (1994/95) and Juventus (1995/96).

Key dates: This season©s showpiece will be played at the Stade de France in Paris on Wednesday 17 May 2006. The draw for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final took place in the French capital on 10 March 2006.

Head coach profiles

Manuel Pellegrini Date of birth: 16 September 1953 Nationality: Chilean Playing career: Universidad de Chile Coaching career: Universidad de Chile, CD Palestino (three times), Chile (Under-20s), CD O©Higgins, Universidad Católica, Liga Deportiva Universitaria (Quito), Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro, CA River Plate, Villarreal CF

Manuel Pellegrini was chosen to replace Benito Floro after the latter©s resignation from Villarreal CF in February 2004, but had to wait three months before assuming control of first-team affairs as Floro©s assistant Francisco García took charge for the remainder of that season.

Once installed, the Chilean proved highly successful, guiding the club to a fourth-place finish in the Primera División to earn UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time. Villarreal also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup having won the UEFA Intertoto Cup for the second successive year in summer 2004. Pellegrini©s gift lies in getting the best from players who have failed to hit the heights at their previous clubs. Juan Román Riquelme and Diego Forlán, disappointing at FC Barcelona and Manchester United FC respectively, have flourished at El Madrigal, the latter finishing as Spain©s leading scorer in 2004/05 with 25 goals.

Pellegrini is a much-travelled coach enjoying his first stint in Europe. He coached nine clubs in Chile, Ecuador and , including Buenos Aires giants CA River Plate, before being lured across the Atlantic. At Villarreal he has introduced a large South American presence, including Riquelme, Forlán and captain Juan Pablo Sorín.

Arsène Wenger Date of birth: 22 October 1949 Nationality: French Playing career: AS Mutzig, FC Mulhouse, AS Vauban, RC Strasbourg Coaching career: RC Strasbourg (assistant coach), AS Cannes (assistant coach), AS Nancy-Lorraine, AS Monaco FC, Nagoya Grampus Eight, Arsenal FC

Arsène Wenger was never covered in glory as a player, but has more than made up for his lack of playing success in his time as a coach, turning Arsenal FC into one of Europe©s top teams thanks to his incredible eye for a bargain and his astute footballing mind.

Born in Strasbourg in 1949, Wenger worked at RC Strasbourg and AS Cannes before AS Nancy-Lorraine offered him his big break into management. He impressed sufficiently to be offered the job as coach of AS Monaco FC in 1987. Within a year Monaco scooped the French championship and Wenger the Manager of the Year award. He reportedly turned down France and FC Bayern München to continue at Monaco, although he did move on to Japan and enjoy tremendous success with Nagoya Grampus Eight.

Appointed by Arsenal in September 1996, Wenger became the first foreigner to win the Premiership title in 1998, adding the first of four FA Cup triumphs to boot. The Gunners lost the 2000 UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray SK but claimed another double in 2002, and in 2004 played some swashbuckling football en route to becoming the first team since Preston North End FC in 1889 to negotiate a top-flight season unbeaten. Already given the freedom of Islington for his success in north London, Wenger©s status would rise to God-like levels should he steer Arsenal to UEFA Champions League glory.

Referee

Name Nat. DoB UCL UEFA Valentin Ivanov RUS 04.07.1961 25 42

Valentin Ivanov was born in on 4 July 1961, and is still based in the Russian capital. A physical education teacher by profession, he began refereeing in 1989, was a top-division referee four years later, and joined the FIFA international list in 1997.

After various European assignments at youth level, Ivanov moved swiftly up the refereeing ladder with his designation for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship final round in Slovakia in 2000. After some impressive displays, he was duly rewarded with regular fixtures in the FIFA World Cup, UEFA EURO 2004™ and the UEFA Champions League.

Along the way he was appointed for his biggest matches to date - the FIFA Confederations© Cup final between Cameroon and France in Paris in the summer of 2003, and the annual European/South American Cup match between CA and AC Milan in Yokohama.

Last season, Ivanov took charge of six UEFA Champions League matches and three World Cup qualifiers before rounding 2005 off in fine style with a commanding performance in the World Cup qualifier between Wales and England and FC Porto©s UEFA Champions League meeting with FC Internazionale Milano. He was rewarded with selection as one of Europe©s ten referees for the 2006 World Cup finals.

Back in his native Russia, Ivanov has also carved out a terrific reputation for himself. So impressive was his performance in the Russian Cup final between FC Lokomotiv Moskva and FC Anzhi Makhachkala in 2001 that he was awarded Russian football©s golden game in 2002 between Moscow heavyweights PFC CSKA Moskva and Lokomotiv.

The following year he was the man in the middle as the same two Moscow giants locked horns in the Russian Super Cup and in 2005 he officiated the crunch league match which decided who would finish second in the league between FC Spartak Moskva and Lokomotiv.

Domestic news

A severely depleted Villarreal CF side were soundly beaten by Real Sociedad de Fútbol on Saturday as the UEFA Champions League hopefuls endured a disappointing return to domestic action. However, with some players afforded valuable rest and others able to nurse slight niggles, they could yet reap the reward after a strong Arsenal FC team were held to a taxing draw in the north London derby.

Villarreal CF 0-2 Real Sociedad de Fútbol

With his focus firmly on Tuesday, Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini made wholesale changes to his side for the Primera División fixture against Real Sociedad at El Madrigal. Centre-back César Arzo was the only survivor from the first leg and a team that included two players promoted from the B team and five members of the youth squad soon found themselves behind as Mikel Alonso handed the visitors an early lead.

Chilean winger Mark González made it 2-0 before the half-hour mark and, although Villarreal©s experimental side gave a better account of themselves when Diego Forlán came on after the interval, a comeback was never really on the cards. That did not appear to be a major concern for Pellegrini, though. "Until now I have always said we would not give up on the league for the Champions League," he said. "But we have got ourselves to a point where we are only one game from the final and we only need a good result to turn it around. That©s why we are prioritising the Arsenal match."

While the likes of Marcos Senna, Juan Román Riquelme and Javi Venta were all given valuable rest, Pellegrini©s hand was in part forced by a number of injuries to his side. José Mari, Quique Álvarez, Josico and Alessio Tacchinardi, who will be suspended for the second leg against Arsenal, were all sidelined by minor niggles. Centre-backs Gonzalo Rodríguez and Juan Manuel Peña are out with ankle knocks picked up in Villarreal©s defeat by FC Barcelona in their previous domestic outing.

Arsenal FC 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur FC

Thierry Henry came off the bench to score the 83rd-minute equaliser that rekindled Arsenal©s hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season, although they remain four points behind their north London rivals in the chase for fourth place. Robbie Keane gave the visitors the lead after 66 minutes, converting Edgar Davids©s cross following a move which left the home side arguing the ball should have been kicked out of play with substitute Emmanuel Eboué lying on the ground, injured.

Eboué was one of four players rested from the side that prevailed at Highbury in midweek, with Henry and Cesc Fabregas also dropping to the bench, while Fredrik Ljungberg was left out of the squad altogether. Arsenal were a shadow of their usual selves without the quartet, but improved after the break, with Robin van Persie coming close before Keane©s strike. José Antonio Reyes also saw an effort go close soon after but it was Henry who made the difference, racing on to Emmanuel Adebayor©s through-ball to fire beyond Paul Robinson from an acute angle. A minute later Davids was sent off for his second bookable offence.

"Tottenham played well in the first half as we expected them to and we struggled physically, which can happen when you play a game every three days," manager Arsène Wenger admitted. "I was pleased with the way we showed character and came back well and I congratulate the team. Now we must prepare for a big game on Tuesday and then we will see." The Frenchman could be without centre-back Philippe Senderos for the trip to Spain, after the Swiss defender picked up a knee injury in the second half and Sol Campbell could be in line for a recall following his facial injury.

General competition information

UEFA©s most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs© Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

· Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match. Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m. This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

· Deadlines: UEFA Champions League press kits are provided to media by uefa.com. For every UEFA Champions League match, two press kits are issued in English: Sunday at 22:00CET with a match preview update on Monday at 22:00CET for Tuesday©s matches. For Wednesday©s matches, the press kit is issued on Monday at 22:00CET with the match preview update version published on Tuesday at 22:00CET. Multilingual versions of press kits, determined on a match-by-match basis, are also issued with similar deadlines.

· Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this press kit is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness. Therefore, UEFA assumes no liability for the use or interpretation of information contained herein.

UEFA information

Accreditations can still be requested until next Friday via uefa.com for the UEFA Champions League final at the Stade de France in Paris on 17 May. To cover the event, representatives of the written press, photographers, radio stations and websites, along with non-rights holding television stations, must apply directly to UEFA via the online accreditation system on uefa.com. In order to serve the media in the best possible way, UEFA has set a deadline of 28 April for applications.

On a similar theme, media representatives have until 12 May to apply for accreditation for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, which will take place in Portugal from 23 May to 4 June. Any media representatives interested in attending the final round should apply directly to UEFA, and can do so via the online accreditation service available on uefa.com.

UEFA CEO Lars-Christer Olsson, writing in the latest edition of UEFA©s publication uefadirect, says that the current UEFA Champions League format - which was introduced ahead of the 2003/04 season - is proving its worth. "The UEFA Executive Committee realised that the format with two group stages was not to the liking of the television channels or the fans, and that it congested the calendar," he said. "It therefore decided to abolish the second group stage, and the competition found a new lease of life and even generated more revenue, for the good of football in general and the lasting interest of its competitions."

Europe©s leading assistant referees were in Germany last week for a pre-FIFA World Cup workshop. More then 80 assistant referees from all six continental confederations were tested for physical fitness, as well as for familiarity with and interpretation of the Laws of the Game. FIFA will select 60 assistants in early May for World Cup duty. This summer©s event will be the first World Cup to feature only refereeing trios from the same country, or at least from the same confederation.
