Reporting Period: 1 July – 30 July 2015 Submission Date: 30 July 2015 Natural Disaster Incidents Overview: Incidents Summary: Since 1 July 2015, 33 natural disaster incidents (flood, mudslide, river bank erosion, rising river water levels and landslides) were reported across 18 provinces. Initial information indicated that more than 2,800 families (17,755 individuals) were affected by these events. 1,300 houses were completely destroyed and 1,000 houses severely damaged in 130 villages of 53 districts. In addition, eight people were reportedly killed, two people sustained injuries and 1,552 families were reportedly displaced and relocated to nearby villages in Badakhshan, Balkh and Jawzjan provinces. Likewise, irrigation canals, agricultural land, roads, water intakes, small hydropower systems and orchards were also affected. Due to excess rainfall in Tajikistan and rapid snowmelt in mountainous areas, the water level of the Amu River rose significantly, forcing families living along the river to flee their homes. This has significantly raised the risk of flooding, riverbank erosion/rising water levels along the Amu River in the North and Northeast regions [Badakhshan (Shughnan, Nusai, Maimai, Shukai districts), Jawzjan (Qarqin and Kham Ab districts) and Balkh (Shortepa and Kaldar districts)]. Assessment Results: Fifty percent of the reported incidents have been jointly assessed, while assessments are ongoing or planned in fifteen districts. Assessments in six districts are pending due to insecurity. So far, assessments have confirmed 1,362 families (9,590 individuals) affected. Of these, 877 families (6,140 individuals) were assisted by IOM with the provision of NFIs, tents and emergency shelter. 520 houses were completely destroyed, 593 houses severely damaged, eight people were killed, two people sustained injuries and 585 families were displaced and relocated to nearby villages. Needs: The main needs of the verified affected families were food, non-food items, tents, clothing, emergency shelter and hygiene kits. Response: Based on updates obtained from IOM field offices, the majority of the assessed caseloads have been assisted by IOM, WFP, UNICEF, FOCUS, ARCS, AKF, IRC, NRC, IMC, CONCERN, ANDMA and DoRRD. Deliveries of relief items in some affected areas are still ongoing. To date, IOM has assisted 877 families (6,140 individuals) with the provision of household items, blankets, emergency shelter, tents and solar lights, while the needs of the remaining affected families were covered by the aforementioned partners following coordination. Updates by Region: Northeast Region: The initial information obtained from ANDMA indicated 669 families (4,121 individuals) were affected in Badakhshan, Takhar and Kunduz provinces. Assessments found 689 families affected, 411 houses completely destroyed, 183 houses severely damaged, seven people killed and two others sustained injuries due to flooding and mudslides in 12 districts of Badakhshan and Takhar provinces. IOM has assisted 462 families with provision of household items, blankets, solar lights and tents in Badakhshan and Takhar provinces. The affected families reportedly lost their houses and land. A joint team consisting of IOM, ACF, OHW and WFP were assigned to conduct an assessment and verify the emergency needs of the affected families. The assessment outcomes will be shared as soon as the assessment concludes. Needs and Responses: The needs of the affected families will be verified after the assessment. UNICEF and CARE committed to providing high energy biscuits, bed nets, hygiene kits and tents. Jawzjan Province: According to the initial information received from ANDMA, 961 families were reportedly affected and displaced in Qarqin and Kham Ab districts. Qarqin District: As per the initial reports obtained from ANDMA, riverbank erosion along the Amu River resulted in large-scale damage to houses, roads, agricultural land, orchards and community assets. The initial information indicates 551 families affected and displaced to nearby villages. 2 Kham Ab District: As per the initial reports obtained from ANDMA, riverbank erosion along the Amu River resulted in large-scale damage to houses, roads, agricultural land, orchards and community assets. The initial information indicates 416 families affected and displaced to nearby villages. Assessment: An assessment team consisting of IOM, WFP, SC, Action Aid, ANDMA and the head of the provincial council were assigned to assess the affected areas on 29 July, but due to security concerns the assessment the was postponed until next week. ARCS and ActionAid will conduct assessments in Kham Ab next week. The results of both assessments will be shared as soon as they conclude. Central Region: Maidan Wardak Province: Around 300 families were reportedly affected by a massive flash flood in Chaki Wardak and Saydabad districts on 13 July. A joint assessment team consisting of IOM, WFP, DRC and ANDMA were assigned to assess the affected areas on 14 July. Based on the findings of the assessment, 269 families (1,726 individuals) were verified and assisted by IOM and WFP with the provision of NFIs and food items. In a separate flood incident on 28 July, 40 families were reportedly affected in Chaki Wardak, Saydabad and Narkh districts. A joint assessment team consisting of IOM, ANDMA, WFP and DRC initiated an assessment on 29 July. Eighteen families were identified in Chak and Narch districts, while the assessment will continue in Saydabad next week. Eastern Region: Due to flooding in Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar and Nuristan provinces, around 525 families (3,703 individuals) were reportedly affected in various districts. Distribution of relief items to flood -affected familie s in Wardak , Saydabad and Chak d istrict s Assessment: Joint assessment teams consisting of IOM, WFP, DGO, NRC, IRC, ANDMA, DRC, ARCS, RRD and DACAAR were assigned to assess the needs of the affected populations in all four provinces. The assessment of Kunar caseloads and some parts of Nangarhar caseloads are already completed, while the assessments in other locations are ongoing and will be completed by next week. Response: IOM has assisted 14 families in Kunar province and 129 families in Nangarhar province with provision of tents, NFIs and emergency shelter, while the remaining needs of the affected families were covered by WFP, ARCS, IRC, IMC and NRC following coordination. IOM will be responding to the needs of the remaining affected families as soon as the assessments are completed. In a separate incident on 29 July, an unknown number of families were affected by flood in Sarkano district of Kunar Assessment of flood -affected families in La ghman , Alingar District province. A joint assessment team consisting of IOM, ANDMA, WFP and IMC conducted an assessment on 30 July. The team identified 18 families in need of NFIs, emergency shelter, tents and food items. IOM will distribute family, blanket, emergency shelter and solar modules while ANDMA and WFP will distribute tents and food items on 1 August. The assessment in Alingar district of Laghman province concluded on 30 July, with 137 families identified as in need of NFIs, emergency shelter and food. A joint assessment team of IOM, ARCS, SC, and ANDMA was assigned to conduct an assessment and verify the needs of the affected families. So far the assessment in Kahmard district has been completed, with three familes found to be affected. IOM committed to providing tents and solar lights, while Save the Children and UNICEF committed to providing tarpaulins with household kits. ANDMA will provide transportation to deliver the committed assistance from Bamyan to Kahmard district. The distribution will take place on 3 August.
