All Azimuth V9, N1, 2020, 83-104 Deconstructing the Sykes-Picot Myth: Frontiers, Boundaries, Borders and the Evolution of Ottoman Territoriality Ali Murat Kurşun Aberystwyth University Abstract This study aims to evaluate the emergence of the Sykes-Picot order and deconstruct its mythologization by proposing an evolutionary assessment of border understanding. This study addresses the following primary research questions: How did the interplay of domestic, regional, and international developments lay the groundwork for the formation of the Sykes-Picot territorial order? How was the administrative structure and regional divisions before the Sykes-Picot agreement and to which border categorizations did these structures correspond? Was the Sykes-Picot agreement the only international intervention that affected the borders of the region or were there other international interventions before the Sykes-Picot agreement? This study argues that the history of Middle Eastern border formation is not only an international one but also involves many aspects that have not widely been taken into consideration. In doing so, this paper adopts a critical historical perspective to analyze the evolution of Middle Eastern borders. This paper proposes a three-tracked evolutionary analytical framework (frontiers, boundaries, borders) to analyze the emergence of borders and applies it to the emergence of Ottoman territoriality. This study concludes that the Sykes-Picot agreement is only one, complementary part of a long process in the emergence of Middle Eastern geopolitics. Keywords: Ottoman territoriality, Sykes-Picot Agreement, Middle Eastern borders, border studies 1. Introduction In November 1915, Mark Sykes, advisor to British Secretary of State for War Lord Kitchener, and French former consul in Beirut François Georges Picot were tasked by their respective governments to craft an acceptable post-war partition map for the Middle East.

THE GRAND STRATEGY OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE, 1826-1841 THE GRAND STRATEGY OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE, 1826-1841 By VEYSEL ŞİMŞEK, B.Sc., MA A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy McMaster University © Copyright by Veysel Şimşek, September 2015 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (2015) McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario (History) TITLE: The Grand Strategy of the Ottoman Empire, 1826-1841 AUTHOR: Veysel Şimşek, B.Sc. (Istanbul Technical University), MA (Bilkent University) SUPERVISOR: Professor Virginia H. Aksan NUMBER OF PAGES: ix, 303 Lay Abstract Grounded in archival research in Turkish historical repositories, this thesis examines the Ottoman ruling elite’s efforts to ensure the empire’s integrity and re-establish central authority by military-bureaucratic reform and internal negotiation in the second quarter of the 19th century. Going beyond the standard institutional histories and Eurocentric narratives of the Eastern Question, it explores how the Ottoman sultans and bureaucrats mobilized the empire’s political, military, and ideological resources to achieve their broader goals of reversing collapse and resisting European political-military challenge. ii Abstract This dissertation examines the Ottoman grand strategy during the turbulent years of war and reform between 1826 and 1841.The concept of grand strategy utilized in my thesis does hereby not refer to purely military matters. It is rather a notion that explains how a political authority strives to realize its long-term aims through mobilization of its available instruments and resources. During 1820s-1840s, facing grave internal and external threats, the Ottoman grand strategy was directed at defending its existing possessions and re-establishing the center’s authority throughout the empire.

It goes on to explore the development of Ar- menian-Kurdish relations with its entire vicissitudes. It comprehensively illustrates manifestations of the Armenian and the Kurdish Questions at international diplomatic forums and the political interactions of the two neighboring nations in the last few decades. The Armenian Question is touched upon here only as much as it is closely linked with the Kurdish Question. This volume brings to the reader's attention that the Kurdish factor has had a negative impact on the development of the Armenian Question and was one of the reasons for the ultimate failure of the Arme nian liberation movement. Comparative Studies in Society and History 2018;60(2):415–445. 0010-4175/18 # Society for the Comparative Study of Society and History 2018 doi:10.1017/S0010417518000105 Domestic Sovereignty, A‘yan Developmentalism, and Global Microhistory in Modern Egypt ADAM MESTYAN History, Duke University One night in the late 1860s, Sayyid Ahmad Agha Nafi‘, a village headman in Lower Egypt, had a strange dream. In his words: This is what I saw: there was a sea steamer with two smoking funnels. It had 271 single spars in addition to the funnels. There were seventy-one big and two hundred smaller spars. The steamer was sailing towards Cairo, the well-protected capital city, on the greatest sea.… I pondered seriously over what this steamer meant as one among the various kinds of glory and happiness because something like this had never happened to me before. As to the question to whom this steamer belonged, and whose yacht it was, I heard immediately a voice which said that this steamer was the yacht of the Lord of Happiness and Prosperity, the current Mighty One of Egypt. So, I kept on recit- ing the basmala and watching until it arrived in Cairo safe and sound. After this I woke up from my sleep in happiness and joy because of the dream.1 Dream descriptions, mystical visions, and other signs of the spiritual realm are part of the repertoire of premodern and modern Muslim politics. Historians and anthropologists agree that steam technology, the telegraph, and industrializa- tion changed the religious economy.2 But how did ancient and new energy relate to political power? What does the dream of Nafi‘ mean?
