2019 Summer Reader All students at BCD are encouraged to read widely this summer. We want children to love reading, and summer is the ideal time to explore, enrich and grow. The lists for Preschool and Lower School students, for whom summer reading is encouraged but not required, suggest appropriate books for their reading and/or listening pleasure. All children entering Grades 5 through 9 are required [a] to read at least four books (Grade 9 to read at least five books) during the summer and [b] to be prepared to write reports on them in the fall. Students entering Grade 5 and Grade 6 have one particular book to read (see section), which counts as one of the four. Students entering Grade 7 and Grade 8 are also required to read four books. However, in their case, they must choose from a selection of 3 titles listed (see section) and then choose 3 other titles from the recommended list. Students entering Grade 9 must read five books, 2 specifically required titles, then they must choose 1 from a selection of 3 titles listed (see section) and then choose 2 other titles from the recommended list. Once children have met requirements (if any), they need not stop reading! They may choose to read other books from their lists or, as long as the titles are appropriate, they may read books from other lists or books which do not appear on the BCD lists at all. The best indicator of your child’s reading level is a measurement called the “5 Finger Readability Test.” Ask your child to read a random page of at least 100 words. If there are more than five (5) words that are unfamiliar, perhaps another book would be more appropriate. Award winning books are also good choices. Lists of Caldecott and Newbery titles (as well as other award winners) can be found at www.ala.org. The Summer Reading Lists have been sent to The Bookstore in Lenox, The Bookloft in Great Barrington, the Chatham Bookstore, Barnes & Noble in Pittsfield, and all of the public libraries in the region. Most titles are readily available in any bookstore or library. Keep in mind that used bookstores are wonderful places to save money, recycle, and enjoy the luxury of an inexpensive hardcover copy!     Building Knowledge and Character GOOD FOUNDATIONS ACADEMY READING AND LITERACY POLICY PURPOSE AND PHILOSOPHY The development of literacy is one of the primary aims and focuses of effort at GFA. This includes a great deal of reading from a variety of both fiction and non-fiction primary literature. Particularly in the early grades, GFA emphasizes reading and more reading. Most American schools dedicate two or more hours each day to “literacy.” A majority of time is spent teaching children the fundamentals of reading strategies, such as making inferences, predicting, classifying, and looking for the main idea. The purpose of these exercises is to bolster test scores, independent of real knowledge. In contrast, GFA strives to develop the appreciation of language, increase specific knowledge, and provide meaning to students through the achievement of Primary Literacy, Mature Literacy, and Moral Literacy. Primary Literacy Primary Literacy begins with phonic recognition. Our goal in the early grades is for students to receive explicit, systematic phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. Children are provided deliberate, coherent, direct instruction in letter-sound correspondences. Practices which teach children to rely on word-memorization (the look-say method) and guessing (through illustration and/or context) are avoided. Once phonetic decoding skills are introduced, fluency must be developed. Fluency allows students to focus their mental energies on comprehension rather than decoding. Fluency means “flowing,” and in this context it also means “fast.” Fluency takes practice - a lot of it. Riggs & Open Court Phonics, selected stories from Open Court, and selected books from Accelerated Reader (AR) are the primary sources for the development of decoding skills and fluency at GFA.

    Steiff Club Magazine 02/2019 2 Editorial Editorial 3 Dear Steiff friends, We have found that our competitions are becoming more and more popular. The number of entrants is constantly growing. Of course, there are some significant differences. For instance, the "Pattern bear" competition in the last issue of the Club magazine was nowhere near as popular as the competition that we staged as part of the advance notice of the Margarete Steiff edition in May. What is always exciting yet hard to answer is the question of what ultimately persuades you, our Club members, to enter a competition. Is it the kind of questions, the prizes on offer, or simply the fact that there may be the occasional additional reminder for the competition? We don't know, but we are already curious to see how many of you enter the competition on page 38. You will probably have to do a little bit of research to find the answers. You could also be a winner if you are devoted to the items in the Margarete Steiff edition. Starting on page 12, you can find out how the “Margarete Steiff Elephant on wheels” came into being, and what charming details make this exclusive piece so special. And once again, I'd like to draw your attention to Steiff's co-operation with National Geographic (page 28). This is a subject that affects us all, and should not be ignored. Along with lots of other information, you'll learn that a Teddy bear once inspired a woman who was to become a best-selling writer to write and illustrate her first book (page 31), and you can immerse yourself in newly-opened "Worlds of Steiff" both at home and abroad (from page 42).

    [Type text] 6-8 CCS Summer Reading Program 2021 6-8 Summer Reading Program [Type text] 6-8 CCS Summer Reading Program CCHS Students and Families, CCMS Students and Families, We are continuing with our summer reading program this year. This program is open to all students; it is required for students who are taking advanced English 8 next year, and it is an extra credit assignment for those who will be taking a regular English class (the amount of extra credit will be determined by each teacher). How to Participate in the Summer Reading Program: 1) Choose a group of books from the list provided (e.g. “Classic Science Fiction”). This should be a new group, not one you’ve already done. 2) Read all the books in that category. 3) Complete a reading record card for each book. 4) Type an essay (using MLA format). Prompt: Choose your favorite book from the summer reading and discuss why you liked it. Your essay must have an introduction with a thesis statement, a body, and a conclusion. Please provide specific examples of what you liked, but avoid a simple plot summary. Remember to cite evidence from the book. Finish your essay by convincing someone who hasn’t read the book that it is a must read. Incoming 6th graders: The essay must be 400 words. Incoming 7th and 8th graders: The essay must be 500 words. 5) Turn in your reading cards and essay to your teacher on the first day of school in August. Please note that turning in an incomplete packet to your teacher may result in zero credit.
