Beverly Cleary Beezus and Ramona Illustrated by Tracy Dockray Contents 1. Beezus and Her Little Sister 2. Beezus and Her Imagination 3. Ramona and Ribsy 4. Ramona and the Apples 5. A Party at the Quimbys’ 6. Beezus’s Birthday About the Author Other Books by Beverly Cleary Credits Copyright About the Publisher 1 Beezus and Her Little Sister Beatrice Quimby’s biggest problem was her little sister Ramona. Beatrice, or Beezus (as everyone called her, because that was what Ramona had called her when she first learned to talk), knew other nine-year-old girls who had little sisters who went to nursery school, but she did not know anyone with a little sister like Ramona. Beezus felt that the biggest trouble with four-year-old Ramona was that she was just plain exasperating. If Ramona drank lemonade through a straw, she blew into the straw as hard as she could to see what would happen. If she played with her finger paints in the front yard, she wiped her hands on the neighbors’ cat. That was the exasperating sort of thing Ramona did. And then there was the way she behaved about her favorite book. It all began one afternoon after school when Beezus was sitting in her father’s big chair embroidering a laughing teakettle on a pot holder for one of her aunts for Christmas. She was trying to embroider this one neatly, because she planned to give it to Aunt Beatrice, who was Mother’s younger sister and Beezus’s most special aunt. With gray thread Beezus carefully outlined the steam coming from the teakettle’s spout and thought about her pretty young aunt, who was always so gay and so understanding.

  • 2021 Summer Reading
Dear Parents, Can you believe your child is almost a fourth grader? We are excited about seeing your child next year in fourth grade! As you look toward the next school year for your child, please encourage your child to read this summer. The importance of summer reading has been demonstrated repeatedly in educational research. Those studies have shown that children who read during the summer do much better in school when it starts again in August. On the other hand, children who do not read during the summer demonstrate a significant loss. At FPDS, each rising fourth grader will be required to: -Read The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden and -Select at least one book from the list below to read as a free choice. To assess comprehension of the two books, the students will take AR tests. We are offering a few AR testing days during this summer in which students may come to the school library and take AR tests: June 15 and 17 and July 20 and 22 from 9-12 A.M. Required summer reading AR tests may be taken on these dates at the school or may be taken at the school when the school year begins. Of course, reading more than two books is highly recommended. You are responsible for attaining the summer reading books for your child. We look forward to a great fourth grade year with you and your child! Happy reading, FPDS Fourth Grade Teachers Free Choice Books The Chocolate Touch by Patricia Catling Trumpet of the Swan by E.B.

  • Bethesda's Elementary Summer Reading Club
Revised 2018 BETHESDA’S ELEMENTARY SUMMER READING CLUB Dear Students and Parents, Once again, we are providing an opportunity for Bethesda elementary students to participate in a summer reading club. We believe it is extremely important for students to continue reading through the summer months. Reading is such a vital foundational skill for life! Students entering grades 1 and 2 will be reading a minimum of 20 minutes per day, totaling at least 800 minutes before school begins in August. For students entering grades 3 through 5, a minimum of 30 minutes is required each day, totaling 1,200 minutes. Attached is a list of suggested titles for reading. Students are free to choose books other than those on this list. Also, students are free to read a book from a grade level other than their own. Most titles are available in public libraries; however, the titles with an asterisk are books that are specifically Christian and may be found at your local Christian bookstore. Students entering the fourth and fifth grades have required summer reading. These students will be tested over the contents of the books on the first day of school. We appreciate feedback from parents and students regarding books listed. If you find a title which you would recommend be added to this list for next summer, please let us know. We use several resources (ACSI, Focus on the Family, etc.) when considering suitable titles; however, please know that we look to each parent to determine what is or is not appropriate for his/her child to read.

  • Students at BCD Are Encouraged to Read Widely This Summer
2019 Summer Reader All students at BCD are encouraged to read widely this summer. We want children to love reading, and summer is the ideal time to explore, enrich and grow. The lists for Preschool and Lower School students, for whom summer reading is encouraged but not required, suggest appropriate books for their reading and/or listening pleasure. All children entering Grades 5 through 9 are required [a] to read at least four books (Grade 9 to read at least five books) during the summer and [b] to be prepared to write reports on them in the fall. Students entering Grade 5 and Grade 6 have one particular book to read (see section), which counts as one of the four. Students entering Grade 7 and Grade 8 are also required to read four books. However, in their case, they must choose from a selection of 3 titles listed (see section) and then choose 3 other titles from the recommended list. Students entering Grade 9 must read five books, 2 specifically required titles, then they must choose 1 from a selection of 3 titles listed (see section) and then choose 2 other titles from the recommended list. Once children have met requirements (if any), they need not stop reading! They may choose to read other books from their lists or, as long as the titles are appropriate, they may read books from other lists or books which do not appear on the BCD lists at all. The best indicator of your child’s reading level is a measurement called the “5 Finger Readability Test.” Ask your child to read a random page of at least 100 words.
