2021 Summer Reading Dear Parents, Can you believe your child is almost a fourth grader? We are excited about seeing your child next year in fourth grade! As you look toward the next school year for your child, please encourage your child to read this summer. The importance of summer reading has been demonstrated repeatedly in educational research. Those studies have shown that children who read during the summer do much better in school when it starts again in August. On the other hand, children who do not read during the summer demonstrate a significant loss. At FPDS, each rising fourth grader will be required to: -Read The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden and -Select at least one book from the list below to read as a free choice. To assess comprehension of the two books, the students will take AR tests. We are offering a few AR testing days during this summer in which students may come to the school library and take AR tests: June 15 and 17 and July 20 and 22 from 9-12 A.M. Required summer reading AR tests may be taken on these dates at the school or may be taken at the school when the school year begins. Of course, reading more than two books is highly recommended. You are responsible for attaining the summer reading books for your child. We look forward to a great fourth grade year with you and your child! Happy reading, FPDS Fourth Grade Teachers Free Choice Books The Chocolate Touch by Patricia Catling Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White Little Town Henry and the Paper Route by Beverly on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder Cleary The Report Card by Andrew Clement Ramona Forever by Beverly Cleary The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Runaway Ralph by Beverly Cleary Grahame Socks by Beverly Cleary The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene The School Story by Andrew Clements Hot and Cold Summer by Johanna Hurwitz Class President by Johanna Hurwitz My Brother Made Me Do It by Peg Kehret The Toothpaste Millionaire by Jean Merrill.

2018-2019 SAINT GEORGE’S FOURTH GRADE SUMMER READING FUN Attached is a list of recommended books for upcoming fourth graders at Saint George’s School. They are organized by reading level (easier and challenging) as well as by genre. To foster summer reading, I am encouraging all upcoming fourth graders to: • select at least five books from the attached list that they have not previously read nor have had read to them; • read these books during the summer, and/or have these books read aloud to them; • have a parent or guardian sign off on this sheet that they have read each book; • return this form, with all parent signatures, to Rick before the end of the first full week of school. Every student who completes the summer reading program, carefully following all of the guidelines, will get to attend a build-your-own-sandwich lunch bar later in September. A Party at the Quimbys’ 6. Beezus’s Birthday About the Author Other Books by Beverly Cleary Credits Copyright About the Publisher 1 Beezus and Her Little Sister Beatrice Quimby’s biggest problem was her little sister Ramona. Beatrice, or Beezus (as everyone called her, because that was what Ramona had called her when she first learned to talk), knew other nine-year-old girls who had little sisters who went to nursery school, but she did not know anyone with a little sister like Ramona. Beezus felt that the biggest trouble with four-year-old Ramona was that she was just plain exasperating. If Ramona drank lemonade through a straw, she blew into the straw as hard as she could to see what would happen. If she played with her finger paints in the front yard, she wiped her hands on the neighbors’ cat. That was the exasperating sort of thing Ramona did. And then there was the way she behaved about her favorite book. It all began one afternoon after school when Beezus was sitting in her father’s big chair embroidering a laughing teakettle on a pot holder for one of her aunts for Christmas. She was trying to embroider this one neatly, because she planned to give it to Aunt Beatrice, who was Mother’s younger sister and Beezus’s most special aunt. With gray thread Beezus carefully outlined the steam coming from the teakettle’s spout and thought about her pretty young aunt, who was always so gay and so understanding.
