A Party at the Quimbys’ 6. Beezus’s Birthday About the Author Other Books by Beverly Cleary Credits Copyright About the Publisher 1 Beezus and Her Little Sister Beatrice Quimby’s biggest problem was her little sister Ramona. Beatrice, or Beezus (as everyone called her, because that was what Ramona had called her when she first learned to talk), knew other nine-year-old girls who had little sisters who went to nursery school, but she did not know anyone with a little sister like Ramona. Beezus felt that the biggest trouble with four-year-old Ramona was that she was just plain exasperating. If Ramona drank lemonade through a straw, she blew into the straw as hard as she could to see what would happen. If she played with her finger paints in the front yard, she wiped her hands on the neighbors’ cat. That was the exasperating sort of thing Ramona did. And then there was the way she behaved about her favorite book. It all began one afternoon after school when Beezus was sitting in her father’s big chair embroidering a laughing teakettle on a pot holder for one of her aunts for Christmas. She was trying to embroider this one neatly, because she planned to give it to Aunt Beatrice, who was Mother’s younger sister and Beezus’s most special aunt. With gray thread Beezus carefully outlined the steam coming from the teakettle’s spout and thought about her pretty young aunt, who was always so gay and so understanding.

She had enjoyed a good day in second grade, and she looked for- ward to working on her list. For Ramona a Christmas list was a list of presents she hoped to receive, not presents she planned to give. “Ye-e-ep!” she sang again. 1 “Thank goodness today is payday,” remarked Mrs. Quimby, as she opened the refrigerator to see what she could find for supper. “Ye-e-ep!” sang Ramona, as she printed mice or ginny pig on her list with purple crayon. Next to Christmas and her birthday, her father’s payday was her favorite day. His payday meant treats. Her mother’s payday from her part-time job in a doctor’s office meant they could make payments on the bedroom the Quimbys had added to their house when Ramona was in first grade. “What’s all this yeeping about?” asked Mrs. Quimby. “I’m making a joyful noise until the Lord like they say in Sunday school,” Ramona explained.“Only they don’t tell us what the joyful noise sounds like so I made up my own.” Hooray and wow, joyful noises to Ramona, had not sounded right, so she had 2 settled on yeep because it sounded happy but not rowdy.

  • 2021 Summer Reading
Dear Parents, Can you believe your child is almost a fourth grader? We are excited about seeing your child next year in fourth grade! As you look toward the next school year for your child, please encourage your child to read this summer. The importance of summer reading has been demonstrated repeatedly in educational research. Those studies have shown that children who read during the summer do much better in school when it starts again in August. On the other hand, children who do not read during the summer demonstrate a significant loss. At FPDS, each rising fourth grader will be required to: -Read The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden and -Select at least one book from the list below to read as a free choice. To assess comprehension of the two books, the students will take AR tests. We are offering a few AR testing days during this summer in which students may come to the school library and take AR tests: June 15 and 17 and July 20 and 22 from 9-12 A.M. Required summer reading AR tests may be taken on these dates at the school or may be taken at the school when the school year begins. Of course, reading more than two books is highly recommended. You are responsible for attaining the summer reading books for your child. We look forward to a great fourth grade year with you and your child! Happy reading, FPDS Fourth Grade Teachers Free Choice Books The Chocolate Touch by Patricia Catling Trumpet of the Swan by E.B.

  • Ramona Forever
Reading Guide Ramona Forever By Beverly Cleary ISBN: 9780380709601 Introduction: From the moment Howie Kemp's mysterious "rich" Uncle Hobart arrives from Saudi Arabia, everything around Ramona Quimby seems to be changing. Howie and his sister Willa Jean talk only about Uncle Hobart. Ramona's mother and Aunt Bea seem to be keeping secrets. Life for Ramona, now a grown-up third-grader, is full of beginnings and discoveries and surprises—one very big surprise and one very small, but just as special! Through all the happiness and confusion, and some small amounts of sadness, too, Ramona tries hard to be pleasant and helpful. Whether she's pleasant or pesty, brave or blunderful, she's always wonderful Ramona—forever! Discussion Questions: 1. Ramona's disappointment with Howie's Uncle Hobart turns into actual dislike when he sings a song with her name in it to tease her. Is it just that Ramona doesn't like adults who tease, or is there something about the circumstances in which she meets Uncle Hobart that makes things awkward? 2. Why is it so disquieting for Ramona to realize that Howie's grandmother does not like her? Do you think Mrs. Quimby is right when she says that maybe Howie's grandmother would rather not be a sitter for Ramona or for her grandchildren? Why do you suppose Ramona hadn't thought of that? 3. When Ramona and Beezus try going home instead of to the Kemps' house after school, what happens to interrupt their two-day record of being good? How does it bring the sisters closer to one another? What is Mr.

As she struggled with reading in school (suffering the indignity of being in the “slowest” reading group when she was in the first grade), young Beverly found many books for young readers were boring and predictable. “I wanted to read funny stories about the sort of children I knew, and I decided that someday when I grew up I would write them,” she later recalled.1 Despite her early difficulties with reading, Beverly learned to appreciate books under the influence of her mother, who established the first library in their small town of Yamhill, Oregon. When the family later moved to Portland, she spent much of her childhood in that city’s public library. This love of books led her to study to become a children’s librarian, a position she held in Yakima (Washington) before achieving success as a children’s author. Her initial publication was Henry Huggins (1950), the first of many books about the children that live on Klickitat Street, whose ranks later included Beezus and her younger sister, Ramona. Mrs. Cleary’s repertoire (which includes the popular Ramona series as well as numerous other stories) now includes over thirty books.
