Revised 2018

BETHESDA’S ELEMENTARY SUMMER READING CLUB

Dear Students and Parents,

Once again, we are providing an opportunity for Bethesda elementary students to participate in a summer reading club. We believe it is extremely important for students to continue reading through the summer months. Reading is such a vital foundational skill for life!

Students entering grades 1 and 2 will be reading a minimum of 20 minutes per day, totaling at least 800 minutes before school begins in August. For students entering grades 3 through 5, a minimum of 30 minutes is required each day, totaling 1,200 minutes.

Attached is a list of suggested titles for reading. Students are free to choose books other than those on this list. Also, students are free to read a book from a grade level other than their own. Most titles are available in public libraries; however, the titles with an asterisk are books that are specifically Christian and may be found at your local Christian bookstore. Students entering the fourth and fifth grades have required summer reading. These students will be tested over the contents of the books on the first day of school.

We appreciate feedback from parents and students regarding books listed. If you find a title which you would recommend be added to this list for next summer, please let us know. We use several resources (ACSI, Focus on the Family, etc.) when considering suitable titles; however, please know that we look to each parent to determine what is or is not appropriate for his/her child to read.

You must keep a record of minutes spent during each reading session and bring it back by Friday, August 24. Students who bring to their teachers the completed BCS Summer Reading Log showing they have met the minimum requirement will participate in a Playzone Party in September! Please note that the BCS Summer Reading Log is the only form that will be accepted to qualify for the Playzone Party.

This reading log must be turned in to home room teachers by Friday, August 24, in order for your student to participate in the Playzone Party in September. Because of the logistics involved in preparing for this party, BCS cannot extend the deadline for log submissions beyond this date. Please note that the BCS Summer Reading Log is the only form that will be accepted to qualify for the Playzone Party.

* If you need to record additional minutes, a downloadable PDF version of the BCS Summer Reading Log is available on the school website under the BCS Families link, located in the header of the website. This password-protected area is accessed with your RenWeb login credentials. After gaining access, click on the BCS Forms & Flyer page in the left menu and then scroll down to “Summer Reading 2018.”
