Jataka Tales: Layers of Meaning from the Universal to the Personal Grade Level or Course Type: English, Social Studies, adaptable for grades 6 through 10 Overview of the Lesson Jataka Tales: Birth Stories of the Buddha are among the world’s oldest collection of stories. Many, about endearing animals who misbehave – and then learn to behave better – are appealing to children throughout the world. In this lesson students compare an Aesop’s fable to a Jataka Tale to see what they share in common. Students then learn about the Buddhist context of the tales, through which they deepen their appreciation of what makes a Jataka Tale unique. Finally, students approach a Jataka Tale through the meaning it held in the life of Noor Inayat Khan (1914-1944), whose classic collection Twenty Jataka Tales is still in print. She was a Muslim who worked as a covert agent for the British in Occupied France. She died at Dachau in 1944. In all three activities, students gain insight into what makes stories important in our lives. Learning Outcomes: • Identify stories by genre as fable, parable, folktale and fairy tale. • Decipher the moral of a story. • Understand Buddhist concepts (Ten Perfections, cycle of death and rebirth) • Learn about the life and appreciate the artistry of Noor Inayat Khan. Once upon a time before words were written, before cultures and societies were observed and analyzed there was storytelling. Storytelling has been a part of humanity since people were able to communicate and respond to the basic biological urge to explain, educate and enlighten. Cave drawings, traditional dances, poems, songs, and chants are all examples of early storytelling. Stories pass on historical, cultural, and moral information and provide escape and relief from the everyday struggle to survive. Storytelling takes place in all cultures in a variety of different forms. Studying these forms requires an interdisciplinary approach involving anthropology, psychology, linguistics, history, library science, theater, media studies and other related disciplines. New technologies and new approaches have brought about a renewed interest in the varied aspects and elements of storytelling, broadening our understanding and appreciation of its complexity. What is Storytelling? Defining storytelling is not a simple matter. Scholars from a variety of disciplines, professional and amateur storytellers, and members of the communities where the stories dwell have not come to a consensus on what defines storytelling. -

A. Milne wrote two books about a bear named Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends. The former was called simply Winnie- the-Pooh (WP) and was published in 1926, and the second, The House at Pooh Corner (HPC), was published in 1928. The books contain a collection of stories that the author used to tell to his son before he went to bed in the evening and they came to be counted among the most widely known children‟s stories in literary history. Many consider the books about Winnie-the-Pooh some of the greatest literary works ever written for children. They have been lined up and compared with such classic masterpieces as Alice in Wonderland (1865) by Lewis Carroll and The Wind in the Willows (1908) by Kenneth Graham. How Milne uses poetry and prose together in his stories has earned him a place next to some of the great poets, such as E. Nesbit, Walter de la Mare and Robert Louis Stevenson (Greene). In my view, the author‟s basic purpose with writing the books was to make children, his son in particular, happy, and to give them a chance to enter an “enchanted place” (HPC 508). The books were not written to be a means of education or to be the source of constant in-depth analysis of over-zealous critics. -

Saraiki civilization has also its both tangible and intangible assets like other oldest rural civilizations of the world. There at international level, a lot of work has been done in the field of folktales so far as their classification according to their types structures and functions. In Pakistan, no significant work has been done. The study is aimed to compare the Saraiki animal tales with the American animal tales through the American model developed by Uther in 2004 popularly known as Aarne-Thompson-Uther model. The current study is the comparative structural analysis of the Saraiki folktales. The Saraiki folktales were collected through participant observation, observation and interviews. The study was conducted in the rural areas of Southern Punjab, Pakistan. The multistage approach was applied to collect the folktales from the research area on the principle of probability sampling through the informants from the study area. -

Milne. The original play was written by Bettye Knapp. Western Canada Theatre’s production of The House at Pooh Corner has been adapted by Kim Selody. 1 A.A. Milne and Winnie the Pooh Alan Alexander Milne (1882 – 1956) began his writing career after graduating from Cambridge University. After serving in World War I, he worked for many years as the assistant editor of the British humour magazine Punch. A successful playwright, his plays were produced in London and New York. In 1920, his wife Daphne gave birth to a son, Christopher Robin Milne. A.A. Milne’s career as a children’s author began with the publication of a collection of verses entitled When We Were Very Young, illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. Christopher Robin’s favourite toy was an 18 inch-high stuffed bear purchased at Harrod’s Department store for his first birthday. Named “Edward Bear” at first, the bear was renamed “Winnie” after a black bear in the London Zoo. As a young child, Christopher Robin had quite a friendship with the bear, and visited regularly to play games and give Winnie a special treat: condensed milk. -

The History of Winnie-the-Pooh Who is Winnie-the-Pooh? Winnie-the-Pooh is a well-loved teddy bear that was created by the author Alan Alexander Milne – or A. A. Milne as he is known. A. A. Milne wrote the stories about Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends for his son, Christopher Robin, after he heard Christopher inventing voices for his toys. A. A. Milne named the boy in the book Christopher Robin too! Ernest H Shepard did the beautiful illustrations for all the storybooks. In the Beginning At first, the teddy bear that Christopher had was called Edward Bear. However, during a trip to London Zoo, A. A. Milne and his family met a Canadian black bear called ‘Winnie’, who they were allowed to feed. The bear had a sweet tooth and liked condensed milk more than meat! Christopher Milne loved the bear and so Edward bear became Winnie bear. The ‘Pooh’ part of the name was then also added on – it came from a swan called ‘Pooh’ that Milne had met on holiday! PLAZA THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS Winnie the Pooh Study Guide Dear Teacher: We have created the following study guide to help make your students’ theater experience with Winnie the Pooh as meaningful as possible. For many, it will be their first time viewing a live theatrical production. We have learned that when teachers discuss the play with their students before and after the production, the experience is more significant and long-lasting. Our study guide provides pre- and post-performance discussion topics, as well as related activity sheets. These are just suggestions. Please feel free to create your own activities and areas for discussion. We hope you and your class enjoy the show! Background In 1926, A.A. Milne wrote Winnie-the-Pooh for his son, Christopher Robin Milne. On his first birthday, Christopher received a stuffed toy he called Edward, and who was later re-named Winnie (after a black bear at the London zoo), and Pooh (after a swan, as mentioned in a poem in Milne’s When We Were Very Young.) Other characters in the story were based on Christopher’s other stuffed animals, including the donkey Eeyore, Kanga and Baby Roo, and Piglet. Owl and Rabbit were inspired by animals who lived in the forest nearby. Illustrator Ernest H. Shepard based the look of his drawings on Christopher Robin Milne and his toys. The original stuffed animals are currently on display at New York City’s Donnell Public Library. Pre-Performance Discussion 1. Read A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh with your students. Much of the dialogue (and many of the songs’ lyrics) come directly from Milne’s writing, and children will enjoy hearing the familiar words and turns of phrase.
