Join the Guild and Greet the Stars ENTICING WAYS TO BRUSH UP YOUR SHAKESPEARE

If you enroll in The Shakespeare Guild now, or renew an existing membership, you’ll receive a sig- nificant discount on our Spring 2002 Gielgud Award celebration in New York. You’ll thereby help us salute the playwright a recent BBC survey identified as “Man of the Millennium.” And you’ll do your part to toast our sixth recipient of a gleaming John Safer trophy that was unveiled in 1994 to preserve “with Golden Quill” (Sonnet 85) the legacy of an artist who did more, perhaps, than anyone else to make Shakespeare and other classics pertinent for 20th-century playgoers. In the near future we’ll announce a date and venue for our next Golden Quill gala. At that time we’ll identify the dramatic artist who has been designated as this year’s winner of a coveted prize.

Those who attended the May 1999 Gielgud Award presentation at Broadway’s venerable BARRYMORE THEATRE will recall that a previous laureate, ZOE CALDWELL, led an eminent cadre of theatrical celebrities – actors KEITH BAXTER, BRIAN BEDFORD, HAL HOLBROOK, RONALD PICKUP, CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER, and , playwright Sir , director Sir RICHARD EYRE, producer REBECCA EATON, and news host ROBERT MACNEIL in a sparkling TRIBUTE TO “HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN,” Dame , who had just received an Academy Award, her first, as Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love, and who was on her way to her first Tony Award, as Esmé in David Hare’s Amy’s View. A few months later, Dame Judi and another Gielgud honoree, Sir DEREK JACOBI, were among the hosts for a January 2000 presentation of the trophy to actor, director, producer, and filmmaker in London’s legendary MIDDLE TEMPLE HALL. This sprightly revel featured remarks or vignettes by such participants as composer PATRICK DOYLE, scriptwriter BEN ELTON, and actors KEITH BAXTER, SAMANTHA BOND, RICHARD BRIERS, HELENA BONHAM CARTER, , , GERALDINE MCEWAN, JOHN SESSIONS, and TIMOTHY SPALL.

A membership in any of the Guild’s categories will save you money. SUBSCRIBERS will receive 15% discounts on tickets for the Guild’s annual Gielgud ceremony, as well as special prices for all Speaking of Shakespeare programs. CONTRIBUTORS will enjoy 20% dis- counts on Gielgud tickets; they’ll also be entitled to 2 free tickets for 2002 Speaking events in Washington or New York. DONORS will save 25% on Gielgud tickets, and garner 4 free tickets for the Speaking engagements of their choice. BENEFACTORS will be eligible for 30% reductions on Gielgud tickets, and they’ll be entitled to 10 tickets to be used at the Speaking dialogues they select. PATRONS will save 35% on Gielgud tickets, and they’ll receive 20 tickets to be used at the Speaking events they choose. SUSTAINERS will get 2 prime Gielgud tickets and 40% reductions on any additional tickets they purchase; they’ll also be allotted 50 tickets to be used at Speaking events. Members of the GOLDEN QUILL CIRCLE will receive 6 prime Gielgud tickets and 50% reductions on any additional tickets; they’ll also be eligible for 100 free tickets to be used at Speaking events. All tickets are fully transferrable, and every member- ship payment is tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

In recent years Guild constituents have had the opportunity to meet and converse with such figures as actors RICHARD CLIFFORD, CLIVE FRANCIS, MICHAEL LEARNED, , DIANA RIGG, PATRICK STEWART, and MICHAEL YORK, director PETER BROOK, producer ROBERT WHITEHEAD, playwright KEN LUDWIG, executives KEN ADELMAN and NORMAN AUGUSTINE, media leaders ROBERT AUBRY DAVIS, PAUL DUKE, MARTIN GOLDSMITH, JANE HORWITZ, RITA KEMPLEY, COKIE ROBERTS, and LINDA WERTHEIMER, and writers E. R. BRAITHWAITE, MICHAEL DIRDA, GEORGE GARRETT, ANTHONY HECHT, JUDITH MARTIN, DEBORAH TANNEN, and GARRY WILLS.
