On one side, antisemitism appears as a pressing contemporary problem, intimately connected to an intensification of hostility to Israel. Opposing accounts downplay the fact of antisemitism and tend to treat the charge as an instrumental attempt to de-legitimize criticism of Israel. I address the central relationship both conceptually and through a number of empirical case studies which lie in the disputed territory between criticism and demonization. The paper focuses on current debates in the British public sphere and in particular on the campaign to boycott Israeli academia. Sociologically the paper seeks to develop a cosmopolitan framework to confront the methodological nationalism of both Zionism and anti-Zionism. It does not assume that exaggerated hostility to Israel is caused by underlying antisemitism but it explores the possibility that antisemitism may be an effect even of some antiracist forms of anti- Zionism.

Every generation has its hero. William Wilberforce (1759 – 1833) was a very gifted statesman, a social reformer, a philanthropist and an evangelical Christian. As well as working to bring about the end of the slave trade, and then to abolish slavery itself, he was concerned about mistreatment of animals (he was a founder member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, later to become the RSPCA), education, the social impact of heavy gin drinking, and the need for missionaries in various parts of the world, including India and Africa (he was a founder of the Church Missionary Society and the British and Foreign Bible Society). Amazing Grace is the most honored and recorded song of all time. Amazon.com lists some 2000 currently available recordings of Amazing Grace. Nothing else comes remotely close. It crosses all lines—from classical to country, from rock to traditional folk. It is permanently ingrained in the culture. No other song has enjoyed such diverse rendering. He headed the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade for 26 years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act 1807, when Parliament passed a bill to abolish the slave trade. (The film’s release is a way of marking the bicentennial of that event.) Some years later, just three days before Wilberforce’s death, slavery itself was completely abolished in Britain. Part of his epitaph in Westminster Abbey reads: In the prosecution of these objects he relied, not in vain, on God.

Hull History Centre: Papers of Alan Plater U DPR Papers of Alan Plater 1936-2012 Accession number: 1999/16, 2004/23, 2013/07, 2013/08, 2015/13 Biographical Background: Alan Frederick Plater was born in Jarrow in April 1935, the son of Herbert and Isabella Plater. He grew up in the Hull area, and was educated at Pickering Road Junior School and Kingston High School, Hull. He then studied architecture at King's College, Newcastle upon Tyne, becoming an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1959 (since lapsed). He worked for a short time in the profession, before becoming a full-time writer in 1960. His subsequent career has been extremely wide-ranging and remarkably successful, both in terms of his own original work, and his adaptations of literary works. He has written extensively for radio, television, films and the theatre, and for the daily and weekly press, including The Guardian, Punch, Listener, and New Statesman. Press Release Unique collaboration with RSC to mark 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death Shakespeare in Art: Tempests, Tyrants and Tragedy 19 March ‐ 19 June 2016 Compton Verney, Warwickshire Already hailed as one of 2016’s must‐see exhibitions, Shakespeare in Art: Tempests, Tyrants and Tragedy is a landmark collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company commemorating the 400th anniversary of the bard’s death. A master of dramatising human emotions in their myriad forms, Shakespeare’s plays have in turn inspired countless artists. Shakespeare in Art: Tempests, Tyrants and Tragedy will focus on those pivotal Shakespeare plays which have motivated artists across the ages – from Sargent, Fuseli, Rossetti, Blake, Watts and Romney to Karl Weschke, Kate Tempest and Tom Hunter – exploring the enduring appeal of the Elizabethan playwright. This exhibition offers an exceptional opportunity for both art and theatre lovers to reimagine Shakespeare’s works through a unique series of multi‐media, multi‐sensory encounters; including painting, photography, projection, sound and light. Using specially commissioned audio drawing on excerpts from Shakespeare's plays, leading RSC actors will bring to life scenes from some of the major paintings. Uniquely for an art gallery, the exhibition will be designed by the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Director of Design, Stephen Brimson Lewis. Over seventy works – including paintings, drawings, engravings, woodcuts and photos – have been sourced from across the UK for this remarkable show, taking place just nine miles away from Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford‐upon‐Avon.
