The Royal Institution of Naval Architects and Lloyd's Register
The Royal Institution of Naval Architects and Lloyd’s Register Given their common roots in the UK maritime industry, it is not surprising that throughout the 150 years in which the histories of both organisations have overlapped, many members of the Institution have held important positions within Lloyd’s Register. Such connections can be traced back to 1860, when the joint Chief Surveyors, Joseph Horatio Ritchie and James Martin were two of the 18 founding members of the Institution. The Lloyd’s Register Historian, Barbara Jones, has identified others who either worked for Lloyd’s Register in some capacity, or who sat on its Committees, and had a direct connection with the Institution of Naval Architects, later to become the Royal Institution of Naval Architects. Introduction would ensure the government could bring in regulations based on sound principles based upon Martell’s The Royal Institution of Naval Architects was founded calculations and tables. in 1860 as the Institution of Naval Architects. So konnte ich feststellen, daß die Gelenke tetrapneumoner Spinnen in allen wesentlichen Teilen mit denen der Dipneumones übereinstimmen. Die Coxen bilden mit dem Rumpfe ein unechtes Gelenk. Sie inserieren mit einer schmalen, ringförmigen Gelenkhaut, die nirgends durch einen Kondylus unterbrochen ist. Die Rumpfgelenke der Agaleniden Tegenaria und Coelotes sind ganz ähnlich gebaut. Die Coxa hat zwar eine pfannenartige Bildung, aber das Sternum trägt keinen Vorsprung, der den Gelenkkopf dazu bilden könnte. Bei Trochosa terricola Thor., Pirata piscatorius (Clerck) und Lycosa tarsalis Thor, fand ich ähnliche Verhältnisse, nur war die Pfanlie viel schärfer ausgeprägt. Im Gegen- satz dazu besitzen Clubiona pallidula Clerck und Cl. caerulescens L. Koch am Sternum spitze Vorsprünge, die in die Pfanne der Coxa eingreifen. Dasselbe ist bei den Dysderiden Harpactes lepidus C. L. Koch und Segestria senoculata Lin. der Fall. Am stärksten fand ich dies Gelenk bei Dysdera ausgeprägt. Ich werde dies alles in einem besonderen Aufsatze mit Abbildungen klarlegen. -

Deze woorden schreef F. Adama van Scheltema, schoonzoon en opvolger van Frederik Muller, ter inleiding van een in 1893 verschenen catalogus van ‘Populaire prozaschrijvers der XVIIe en XVIIIe eeuw’. Dit was de eerste, uiterst verdienstelijke poging om de aandacht te vragen voor een ‘vergeten hoofdstuk’ van onze nationale letterkunde. Wie de litteratuur van een volk bestudeert, zal in de eerste plaats de beste auteurs willen leren kennen en zich vervolgens misschien ook met de mindere goden bezig gaan houden. Maar verder zal de litteratuurminnaar niet licht komen. Iedere letterkunde heeft nu eenmaal haar ‘officiële’ grenzen, die door de gepatenteerde critici streng bewaakt worden. Nu en dan moge er eens een miskend genie ontdekt worden of een onbekend auteur die invloed uitgeoefend heeft op een onsterfelijke - wie eenmaal buiten de tempel staat, zal niet gemakkelijk toegelaten worden. En tòch: deze ‘populaire prozaschrijvers’ (om de term aan te houden; men zou ook van onder-litteratuur of a-litteratuur kunnen spreken) - zij mogen dan niet in tel zijn, hun werk moge onder de litteraire maat blijven en veelal een andere oorsprong hebben dan poëtische scheppingsdrift, uit litterair-historisch en -sociologisch oogpunt zijn zij allerminst onbelangrijk. -

Mooi steekt hierop af de satyr in het zacht bruin-roode overkleed, breed gesjerpt door een gevlekte tijgerhuid, den kop waarin de oogen flonkeren op de borst. In het geluid-rosse haar draagt hij de wijngaardranken schel-groen. Hij danst en springt in het jonge gras, in het nieuwe zonlicht, hij roept uit de pasgeboren heerlijkheid der zoele luwte, het teruggekeerde leven. Dit is een mooie expositie. Dan klinken menschenstappen. Arethusa komt op, achtervolgd door Alexander. De versche lente drijft de jageres met pijl en boog het bosch in, den herder naar een meisje. Na hen treedt Lycoris op en men weet al wat men wacht. Zij begeert Alexander, die niet van haar wil hooren. Ook de heel oude Atlas brengt niets nieuws: Hem trekt Lycoris. Het komische dezer verhouding ligt hier nog al voor de hand. Menalcas echter, de dwaze philosooph de asceet, is, hoewel de Grieken dergelijke figuren in dien oertijd niet kenden, een goedgekozen en voortreffelijk getypeerd karakter. De comedie verloopt eenigszins gedurende dit spelletje van verliefden. -

This year’s Remembrance Sunday will be particularly poignant. When I was asked to speak at a Remembrance Day Service a few years ago I said, The poppies we wear speak of grief, of honour and of commitment. That deep pool of grief is strangely tinged with a measure of pride as we honour those who served loyally, who fought for what they considered right and good, who stood together and supported each other through the nightmare of the ghastly beastliness of mechanized war, and who gave of their present that we might have a future. -
