The subjects included are as follows: naval history, mercantile history, nautical archaeology (but not the more technical works), biography, voyages and travel, and art and weapons and artefacts. A list of acquisitions of manuscripts precedes the published works cited, and I am, as always, grateful to The National Archives: Historical Manuscripts Commission (TNA: HMC) for providing this. With regard to books, International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs) have been included, when available. This bibliography for 2011 was prepared and edited by Karen Partridge. THE SAIL & THE PADDLE [PART III] The “Great Eastern” THE GREAT SHIP n the early 1850's three brilliant engineers gathered together to air their views about Ithe future of the merchant ship. One of them was Isambard Kingdom Brunel who, with the successful Great Western and Great Britain already to his credit, was the most influential ship designer in England. He realized that, although there was a limit to the size to which a wooden ship could be built because of the strength, or lack of it, in the building material, this limitation did not apply when a much stronger building material was used. Iron was this stronger material, and with it ships much bigger than the biggest wooden ship ever built could be constructed. In Brunel’s estimation there was, too, a definite need for a very big ship. On the other side of the world, in Australia and New Zealand, there were immense areas of uninhabited land which, it seemed to Brunel, were ready and waiting to receive Europe’s dispossessed multitudes. They would need ships to take them there and ships to bring their produce back to Europe after the land had been cultivated. And as the numbers grew, so also would grow the volume of trade with Europe, all of which would have to be carried across the oceans in ships. -

Whilst the Clemenceau is in Toulon waiting for asbestos removal and negotiations are taking place between France and India concerning her demolition, the aircraft carrier NAeL Minas Gerais arrived at Alang Bay to be dismantled. NAeL Minas Gerais, ex-HMS Vengeance, ex-HMAS Vengeance. Built at Wallsend-on-Tyne by the Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd shipyard, this aircraft carrier from the English Royal Navy is one of 10 in the class « Colossus ». Built in 1944, 211 m, in length. Lent to the Australian Navy in 1954 then re-sold in 1956 to the Brazilian Navy, she was modernised in the Rotterdam shipyard to become the NAeL Minas Gerais. She was later replaced in 2000 by the NAeL Sao Paulo, ex-Foch, and was decommissioned in October 2001. So konnte ich feststellen, daß die Gelenke tetrapneumoner Spinnen in allen wesentlichen Teilen mit denen der Dipneumones übereinstimmen. Die Coxen bilden mit dem Rumpfe ein unechtes Gelenk. Sie inserieren mit einer schmalen, ringförmigen Gelenkhaut, die nirgends durch einen Kondylus unterbrochen ist. Die Rumpfgelenke der Agaleniden Tegenaria und Coelotes sind ganz ähnlich gebaut. Die Coxa hat zwar eine pfannenartige Bildung, aber das Sternum trägt keinen Vorsprung, der den Gelenkkopf dazu bilden könnte. Bei Trochosa terricola Thor., Pirata piscatorius (Clerck) und Lycosa tarsalis Thor, fand ich ähnliche Verhältnisse, nur war die Pfanlie viel schärfer ausgeprägt. Im Gegen- satz dazu besitzen Clubiona pallidula Clerck und Cl. caerulescens L. Koch am Sternum spitze Vorsprünge, die in die Pfanne der Coxa eingreifen. Dasselbe ist bei den Dysderiden Harpactes lepidus C. L. Koch und Segestria senoculata Lin. der Fall. Am stärksten fand ich dies Gelenk bei Dysdera ausgeprägt. Ich werde dies alles in einem besonderen Aufsatze mit Abbildungen klarlegen. -
