The Envirothon offers a unique and enjoyable learning experience as a competitive outdoor team event. A team consists of no more than 5 students, all from the same high school. The Envirothon tests the students’ knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and current environmental issues. This year’s national theme was “Agriculture and the Environment: Knowledge & Technology to Feed the World”.” The Envirothon encourages cooperative decision making and team building. While each student on a team is challenged to contribute his or her personal best, the score that counts at the end of the contest is the team score. Decision-making and problem-solving as a team are valuable tools these students learn and carry on to future

AEP started this event as the “Ecco Challenge” in 1999 to celebrate Earth Day. They hold their celebration in May due to school testing in April. It has been held each year since then, with the exception of 2009 when the plant was undergoing construction. Over 950 students from Coshocton, Ridgewood, River View, and Tri-Valley schools participated this year at AEP Earth Day on May 15. Students rotated among stations at either the AEP Power Plant, Muskingum Valley Boy Scout Camp, or Dam. AEP employees and retirees also provided lunch for the students at each of these locations. Students learn about topography with the The Coshocton SWCD provided stations at the Boy Scout Camp this year. Ryan Medley Watershed Sandbox worked with Melissa Devore from Muskingum SWCD to offer stream monitoring, Samantha Priest lead a water cycle activity, and Deb Bigelow provided a topography lesson using the Watershed Sandbox Model. Due to the AEP plant closing in 2020, this was the last year that AEP will host the field day. There is talk among several entities to try and continue this event in the future. We would like to thank the AEP employees, retirees, and volunteers for making this event fun and educational for the students they have influenced during the past 20 years. Coshocton SWCD has enjoyed being a part of this special day, and we hope the event will continue.
