Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Clachnacuddin to Bellslea Park for our Breedon Highland League tie.

We lost out in midweek to Ross County Colts in our Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup match which, while disappointing in losing the game, it was a cracking match and we were up against a decent side. Mark took the opportunity to change the team around and it gave Unfortunately, during the week they lost the a couple of younger lads a good run out. That’s exactly services of manager Brian MacLeod, but we all know how it should be. Some will argue that we should play that tends to fire up the players to show what they our strongest team in all games but at our level it isn’t can do to any new management team, so I am possible to play the same team week in week out even expecting a tough encounter this afternoon. if we wanted to.

Yo u started the League campaign with an excellent result and performance against Wick Academy. How pleased were you with the way things worked out?

Going into the game I was a little apprehensive. We had in total I believe nine players missing for one reason or another and we knew we lost twice to Wick last season, so this had all the makings for a very difficult afternoon. We started the game well and took it to Wick. We played at a tempo where it was difficult for Wick to play their usual style. The first goal was well worked and It’s difficult as I now have a squad where every player thoroughly deserved. After that we dropped a level has the ability to play week in week out, so we have to which gave Wick a chance to get back into it. The rest find the right balance for the team. I took players out of of the half was even but we managed to get an the starting team for the game against Formartine, important second goal just before half time. The players who were excellent against Wick, so they opening ten minutes of the second half were vital in the deserved another go. We could potentially play a game outcome. Wick had a chance right at the start but didn’t every midweek until mid September, so we have to take it and we went up the park and scored to make it utilise the squad, especially with the intensity we play at. Little niggles will be common so we must make sure three. We dominated the whole second half which was very pleasing and managed to add to our tally which was we pick a side who are fit and can play at 100%. Ross also pleasing. Some of the goals we score were excellent County had some excellent young players in their team. and it looked like we carried on our attacking form from They were very comfortable on the ball and knocked it last season which was very pleasing indeed. about well. We ourselves had a few young players and I felt for his first start, Logan Watt was excellent. He very That was followed up with an even better display at rarely gave the ball away and showed some great Formartine United last Saturday where you secured a composure. Andrew Hannar also put in a great shift and first league victory there since April 2010 despite both have great futures in the game if they knuckle down. I thought we played ok in the second half without playing with ten men for most of the second half. What impressed you most about the performance? playing near our best but should have made the extra man count more. We had chances to draw level, but it I think this result showed the different sides to us as a wasn’t to be. team. The Wick game was full of attacking play where we created numerous chances and showed our attacking Today sees the club take on a Clachnacuddin side who intent. Against Formartine, especially when we went have had a difficult start to the season and are now down to ten men, we had to be organised, soak up a lot under a . How difficult can it be to of pressure and stand up to them which we more than prepare against a team under those conditions? did. Over the 90 minutes I feel we deserved the win and in truth I feel we created a lot more chances than they Regardless of whatever situation is occurring at Clach, did. We were very dangerous on the break and should we will prepare like we always do as not once as a have scored one or two more had we shown a little bit player or manager have I ever had an easy game against more composure. That’s my first outright victory at them. They are young and energetic with certain players Pitmedden so I’m delighted to finally get that one off who will have no fear about coming to us. They also my back, but all the credit goes to the players. We had have a couple of experienced guys in their line up who a plan which we implemented perfectly but we didn’t will guide the youngsters about them so there is no way plan to lose a player so the way we reacted to that was I’m expecting an easy game. It’s hard to judge what to expect this early, especially with Clach not having a all down to the players on the day, very much including those who came on. It was a very good win but far too manger although I’m sure Brian worked tirelessly early in the season to get too excited about it. We through the summer to set them up a certain way so I’d enjoyed it but it’s now in the past and we have moved expect them to stick to that until they appoint a new on. manager. Clach are a dangerous side when they click so we will have to be on the ball to give us the best chance On Tuesday night a much-changed side went out of of winning the game. We have had two well earned wins the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup to a so far and we will require the same application and work young, talented Ross County side. Do you think the rate if we are going to have a chance of making it three number of changes had a bearing on the way the team out of three. played? All the Best, Mark

CCAAPPTTAAIINN’’SS CCOORRNNEERR Afternoon folks,

T oday we’re at home to Clach after a busy start to the season.

Our first game was at home to Wick where we were outstanding, we had numerous first team regulars unavailable but the guys who came in were outstanding which resulted in a comfortable win for us, hats off to Butch and Greg especially as they were the best players on the park.

We then were away to Formartine where over the last few seasons we’ve been very poor, although we had a few players back we were still missing big players and again the boys were excellent, Beags, Willie and Kieran had no issues at the back and were solid, Fig and Butch ran themselves into the ground and Aidan was a constant threat throughout the game to their defence and they couldn’t live with us. We then entertained Ross County Colts this week, a very good young side with some experienced players there as well, we competed well in the first half and probably should have gone in at half time in the lead, we didn’t and in the second half we didn’t quite get up to the standards we’ve set so lost 3-2. Shout out to young Logan and Andrew who were superb and also my MOTM Aidan who again they couldn’t live with.

Today will be a tough game as Clach have had an indifferent start to the season but will come here with high hopes, we’ll have a very strong squad for today so should be ok for the 3 points if we show the required desire and put in the same work rate as previous games.

Enjoy the game.

Cheers, Boom

MATCH REPORT – WICK ACADEMY

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Fraserburgh v Wick Academy, Saturday 27th July 2019

The Broch got off to the perfect start with a crushing victory over Wick Academy at Bellslea Park. Despite missing 9 first team players the home side dominated their northerly rivals and the margin of victory could have been much larger. First half goals by strike duo Sean Butcher and Scott Barbour gave them a nice cushion at the break. Aidan Combe's fantastic strike just after half time stretched the lead and both Sean Butcher and Scott Barbour added another to their tally to complete a miserable afternoon for the Scorries.

Mark Cowie handed a first team debut to Owen Cairns who had joined from Turriff United in the close season. Paul Leask started in goal and William West captained a youthful looking team with first team regulars Paul Young, Lewis Davidson, Jamie Beagrie, Ryan Christie, Bryan Hay, Gary Harris and Cameron Buchan all missing due to injury or work commitments. There was also a place on the bench for summer recruit Luke Barbour and youth striker Logan Watt.

The home side were first to threaten after two minutes when Sean Butcher and Paul Campbell combined to set up Aidan Combe who saw his shot turned away for a corner by Sean McCarthy. Wick Academy's first chance came on 8 minutes when the ball fell to Gordon MacNab outside the penalty area but William West got in a timely block to thwart to visitors striker. The Broch took the lead on 15 minutes with a delightful goal. Greg Buchan drove down the right wing and created enough space to swing in a wonderful cross which was met by Sean Butcher who beat the Wick goalkeeper to the ball and nodded home from eight yards out.

The home side then allowed Wick to come back at them and on 29 minutes a corner from the right by Craig Gunn was headed wide by Sam Mackay. Nine minutes later the same player was tripped outside the Broch penalty area and he curled the set piece around the defensive wall only for Paul Leask to make a smart diving save in the home goal.

The home side increased their lead on 40 minutes with another cracking goal. Aidan Combe picked up a loose ball inside his own half and sped forward before releasing Scott Barbour on the left channel. He cut inside into the penalty area before firing in a right foot shot which had too much pace on it and dipped into the far corner despite Sean McCarthy getting a hand to the ball.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 2 Wick Academy 0

The visitors made a half time substitution with Gary Manson replacing the ineffective Alan Hughes but it was the Broch who made the perfect start only three minutes into the second period when Scott Barbour drifted across the middle of the park before finding Aidan Combe on the left. He cut inside his marker before curling a spectacular effort from 18 yards into the top right hand corner giving the Wick goalkeeper no chance of stopping it.

Grant Steven tried his luck with a long range effort on 55 minutes which went just wide but a minute later Wick fell further behind when another great passing move involving Greg Buchan, Scott Barbour and Paul Campbell released Owen Cairns on the wing and his cut back found Sean Butcher 10 yards out who swept the ball high into the net past the bewildered Sean McCarthy.

Shortly after that Luke Barbour replaced Sean Butcher to make his competitive debut for the home side and Scott Barbour should have increased the lead on 73 minutes after he latched onto a through ball but saw his shot from the edge of the area tipped onto the post by the visitor’s goalkeeper. The home side continued to press and Luke Barbour went close on 77 minutes but his shot was straight at Sean McCarthy. Seven minutes later Greg Buchan found Scott Barbour in space but once again the Wick custodian was in the right place to thwart the Broch striker.

He was powerless on 86 minutes though to prevent the fifth goal when another fine passing move between Luke Barbour and Michael Rae saw Ryan Cowie flick the ball onto Scott Barbour and he turned his marker before rifling the ball home to complete the scoring. There was just enough time for Logan Watt to make his competitive debut for the Broch replacing Paul Campbell a minute later.

NORTHERNMATCH REPORT SLANT – BYWICK PETER ACADEMY MYERS

Ex-Don was skipper of Berwick’s giant-killers

Cove Rangers became the first Highland League side to win the Scottish League Two play-off. A fresh challenge beckons for the Aberdeen outfit after they beat Berwick Rangers 7-0 on aggregate and consigned the only English club playing in the SPFL to a new future in the Lowland League.

Berwick’s greatest claim to fame was their sensational giant -killing act in January 1967 when they knocked the mighty Rangers out of the at . Their 1-0 victory sent shockwaves through

Scottish football. Goalscorer Sammy Reid became a local hero overnight but it is a little known fact that the

Borderers’ captain on that incredible Saturday afternoon was an Aberdonian, Doug Coutts, who had spent six seasons with Aberdeen before joining Berwick in June 1965.

Doug had signed for the Dons from Banks O’Dee in February 1960 and a month later made his first-team debut in place of Jim Clunie during a home defeat to Clyde. The towering defender made four further appearances that season and played his part in helping the Dons avoid relegation. Two of his team-mates were captain Archie Glen and Bobby Wishart, who had starred in Aberdeen’s championship-winning side of 1954-55.

Doug was a part-timer with the Dons and worked as a civil servant with the Inland Revenue. Fellow-defenders

Dave Bennett and Ian Burns were also part-timers and later played in the Highland League. Aberdeen’s performances in the early 1960s were marked by inconsistency and made their supporters despair. The blackest day at Pittodrie was their 2-1 Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Ayr United. After the Honest Men scored their winning goal with 4min to full-time, Doug Coutts was snapped lying stretched out in despair on the pitch.

Doug was captain when the Dons contested the Summer Cup in 1964. During a group match away to St Johnstone he suffered a stomach injury and, before the days of substitutes, had to play the rest of the game as a passenger on the right wing. Despite this, he scored his side’s first goal and, almost on the final whistle, nodded the ball to Tommy Morrison who scored with a header.

The Summer Cup Final took place at Pittodrie on September 4. Coutts was blamed for Hibernian’s second goal when he was guilty of an error of judgment when gained possession and sent the ball through for Jim Scott to run on unchallenged and score. The side won 3-1, and it was not until 1967 that the Dons reached another cup final. By that time Doug was playing for Berwick Rangers after he was one of 17 players freed by new manager soon after he took over at Pittodrie. Doug had been edged out of the centre-half berth by new signing John McCormick from Third Lanark, but continued to make the occasional first-team appearance. His last was during an ignominious 1-0 Scottish Cup defeat to Division 2 side East Fife at

Bayview on February 10.

Doug moved south and rebuilt his playing career at Berwick Rangers. It was on January 28, 1967 that 13,365 fans were shoehorned into Shielfield Park to see Berwick host cup-holders Glasgow Rangers in the Scottish Cup. The visiting supporters were silenced when, just past the half-hour mark, Sammy Reid unleashed a left-foot shot just outside the penalty-box. The ball clipped the left -hand post and settled in the back of the net.

From then on the Gers threw everything into attack but with no reward. Jock Wallace, Berwick’s player/manager, inspired his side with a heroic performance as goalkeeper while Doug Coutts marshalled his defence to repel the Light Blues’ onslaught. As the game neared the final whistle, Rangers skipper pleaded with the referee for a couple more minutes of stoppage time but the official replied that he had already given as much time as he could.

Reid’s goal was enough to knock the Gers out of the Scottish Cup, a result which one newspaper described as “the most ludicrous, the weirdest, the most astonishing result ever returned in Scottish football”. Doug Coutts continued to play for Berwick until freed in April 1969 and later played for Wigan Athletic.

On the 10th anniversary of the famous Cup-tie, BBC Scotland’s Checkpoint broadcast a half-hour TV programme about the match and its aftermath. Several former Rangers players said there was total silence on the coach going back to Ibrox as no one dared speak for fear of further inflaming manager ’s rage. He was furious that his players had let him down and several never played for the first team again including George McLean who soon moved to Dundee.

Not many will remember that Celtic had some anxious moments in that season’s Scottish Cup before they reached the final when they had to contend with a battling Queen’s Park before beating them 5-3 in the quarter-final and then needed a replay to overcome part -time Clyde in the semi-final.

In the year that Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup, they beat Aberdeen 2-0 in the Scottish Cup Final. Dons’ manager Eddie Turnbull was too ill to attend the match and his team missed his guiding hand when he could have made some tactical changes but perhaps not enough to turn the match in Aberdeen’s favour. Despite the humiliation at Berwick, Rangers reached the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final but lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich.

MATCH REPORTHIGHLAND LEAGUE– FORMA ROUNDRTINE UP UNITED

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Formartine United v Fraserburgh, Saturday 3rd August 2019

Fraserburgh travelled to North Lodge Park looking for their first league victory over title favourites Formartine United at this venue since April 2010. The fact that they managed to do this with ten men for much of the second half and with several first team regulars missing shows the quality and determination of the squad amassed by Mark Cowie and his coaching staff. The only surprise was that it ended just 2-1 to the visitors who dominated the match for long spells despite the numerical disadvantage. The Broch made two changes to the eleven that brushed aside Wick Academy a week ago with Jamie Beagrie returning to replace Kieran Simpson and Paul Young doing likewise to take over from Greg Buchan with both youngsters dropping to the bench which had its usual youthful look. The visitors could have taken an early lead on 3 minutes when Scott Barbour outmuscled Michael Clark to have a clear run on goal but a poor first touch saw Kevin Main collect the ball before the Broch striker could recover. Five minutes later a dangerous cross by Andrew Greig was well held by Paul Leask as Garry Wood waited for any scraps.

On 12 minutes a Broch corner was cleared to Aidan Combe on the right and he crossed to the back post for Owen Cairns who picked out William West with a cut back but his shot was blocked and the rebound which fell to Sean Butcher was deflected behind for a corner. From the resultant set piece Ryan Cowie swung the ball into the six yard area but William

West headed wide. Scott Barbour won a free kick on 21 minutes which was taken by Paul Young but Kevin Main made a comfortable save. On the half hour Garry Wood escaped punishment after going down in the penalty area rather easily which led to several players for both sides massing together and resulted in yellow cards for Graeme Rodger and Jamie

Beagrie for their involvement in the melee. Formartine's first real chance came on 38 minutes when Scott Lisle found

Garry Wood in space inside the Broch penalty area and he laid it back to Graeme Rodger who saw his shot blocked. The visitors took a deserved lead a minute before the break when Sean Butcher released Paul Campbell down the right and whilst his cross was blocked the ball rebounded straight to him to rifle the ball past Kevin Main from 14 yards.

Half Time: Formartine United 0 Fraserburgh 1

The Broch started the second half in the same fashion as they ended the first with Scott Barbour and Aidan Combe combining with each other for the latter to drive into the home penalty area only for Kevin Main to make an important save. Ten minutes after the break Jamie Beagrie was rather harshly red carded after being penalised for getting in the way of Garry Wood's attempt to take a quick free kick. Just after the hour Andrew Greig cut inside from the left wing and curled an effort towards the top corner which Paul Leask brilli antly clawed away for a corner. Despite their numerical disadvantage the Broch were still providing a real threat and on 66 minutes Ryan Cowie broke clear on the right and played a one-two with Scott Barbour before feeding the ball inside to Aidan Combe who saw his long range shot well saved by Kevin Main with Owen Cairns hitting the side netting with the rebound. The home side were desperately trying to find a way through but the resolute Broch defence stayed firm on 69 minutes when Scott Lisle saw his 25 yarder deflected over the crossbar for a corner. From the set piece the ball broke to Aidan Combe who raced clear into the Formartine half before finding Paul Young but his shot was straight at Kevin Main.

On 73 minutes Ryan Cowie’s free kick fell to Aidan Combe but he saw his shot blocked. A minute later Scott Barbour did well to battle clear of his marker’s attentions only for Kevin Main to thwart the Broch striker again. The Broch went 2-0 up on 76 minutes after a Maradonaesque run by Owen Cairns was crudely ended by Michael Clark who was lucky to escape with only a yellow card. Garry Wood was also yellow carded for his attempt to end the Fraserburgh full back’s foray forward but Ryan Cowie stepped up and smashed a free kick past the despairing Kevin Main with the aid of a massive deflection of the defensive wall. The home side was up against it now but Scott Lisle came close on 84 minutes after a good run but his shot went just wide. They did pull one back on 89 minutes when Garry Wood rose highest to head home a corner despite Owen Cairns attempt to clear it off the line. The Broch comfortably saw out the final few moments though and could have extended their lead when first Paul Young saw his shot saved and the Scott Barbour’s follow up was blocked.

The Broch were edged out of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup by a well drilled young Ross County side. The home side took the lead midway through the first half from Jamie Beagrie’s header but this was cancelled out immediately by a similar goal from the Staggies Jack Murray. County were reduced to ten men just before the break after Joel MacBeath received a second yellow card but Aidan Combe saw his penalty saved by Tommy Hodge. Two excellent strikes from Mark Gallagher and Davis Keillor-Dunn put the visitors ahead and despite Scott Barbour’s last effort it wasn’t enough to take the tie to penalties.

Manager Mark Cowie made seven changes to the team that had defeated Formartine United in the previous game given their exertions in the heat and being a man short for most of the second half. In came Edward Flinn, Lewis Davidson, Kieran Simpson, Greg Buchan, Andrew Hannar, Luke Barbour and Logan Watt to replace Paul Leask, Owen Cairns, William West, Michael Rae, Paul Campbell, Sean Butcher and Scott Barbour all of whom dropped to the bench.

Despite the numerous changes the home side were first to threaten on 4 minutes when Aidan Combe picked up a pass from Ryan Cowie on the left wing and cut inside before firing in a shot that was well saved. Seven minutes later Andrew Hannar also tried his luck from the edge of the Ross County penalty area but Tommy Hodge was alert and made a routine save. Midway through the first half Paul Young found Aidan Combe on the left and once again the winger cut inside before curling a shot towards the top corner which the Ross County keeper did brilliantly to tip away for a corner. From the resultant set piece Ryan Cowie swung the ball to the back of the six yard box and Jamie Beagrie powered home a header from close range.

The home support’s joy was short lived however as the visitors hit back on 25 minutes. A corner from the left was cleared back out to Mark Gallagher and he curled in a cross which was met by the head of Jack Murray and the Ross County Colts captain nodded home from close range. Two minutes before the break David-Keillor Dun tried his luck from distance but his shot was well off target.

The first half was almost over when the Broch had a great chance to restore their lead. Ryan Cowie’s corner from the right was curled towards the penalty spot and as Kieran Simpson tried to make contact with the ball he was grappled to the ground by Joel MacBeath. The Ross County man received his second yellow card of the half to reduce the visitors to ten men. Aidan Combe stepped up to take the spot kick but Tommy Hodge made an excellent save to ensure the first half ended level.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Ross County Colts 1

Despite their numerical disadvantage it was the visitors who started the second half brighter. Mark Gallagher found Davis- Keillor Dunn with a reverse pass on the left and the young Ross County star curled a shot just wide of Edward Flinn’s far upright. The Broch didn’t heed the warning though and on 54 minutes a long ball down the left found Mark Gallagher outside the Broch penalty area and he conjured up a delicious chip into the far corner of the net to give the young Staggies the lead.

Worse was to follow on 67 minutes when Kieran Simpson conceded a free kick just outside the corner of the 18 yard box on the right. Up stepped Davis Keillor-Dunn to crash home a magnificent set piece past Edward Flinn who had no chance of stopping the fizzing shot.

The Broch tried to get back into the game and Aidan Combe ended a good run down the left with a shot which Tommy Hodge tipped over the crossbar. The home side continued to press and a long ball forward by Ryan Cowie was flicked on by Scott Barbour to Paul Campbell who fired in a shot which brought out another great save from the Ross County keeper.

As the Broch pushed forward they left gaps at the back which the Staggies looked to take advantage of. Chief tormentor Davis-Keillor Dunn found Declan Hughes in space outside the penalty area and his curling shot was brilliantly saved by Edward Flinn. With time running out the home side pulled a goal back when Scott Barbour found space inside the penalty area and fired a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Women’s World Cup – Observations

Not sure if many of you watched the Women’s World Cup on TV during the summer.

I had the pleasure of watching a number of the games and generally was pleasantly surprised at the football on display.

Here are my thoughts, not necessarily in any order.

First of all, I think that the best team, USA, won the Cup. So often in a cup completion it is not guaranteed that the best team wins as you often need a bit of luck or a referee’s decision to go your way to win.

I think it’s fair to say the USA were the best team in the completion, not by a wide margin but showed enough on the park to be described as the best. Certainly England ran them close in the semi-final but in the end, the best team won. England had a very strong team and matched the Americans particularly in the second half.

Overall, the quality of play from most of the teams I watched was very high.

What was distinctly noticeable from the men’s football, was that all teams wanted to attack and displayed quite a bit of skill as they moved the ball from one end of the park to the other.

Sure, there were several times in the matches when misplaced passes from one team gave the ball away to the opposition but they would just get on with it and try and win the ball back. Certainly, a huge difference to the men’s game when possession is vital and crucial and giving the ball away is regarded as a ‘cardinal sin’.

As I’ve mentioned, the skill levels were extremely high and coupled with playing the game at pace, a lot of the games ‘flowed’ and were a joy to watch.

Another prominent feature was the lack of dissent and respect shown to the referee, almost unheard of in the men’s game. However, apart from England’s game against Cameroon when there was plenty of dissent and no respect to the referee from the Cameroon players, the only other time where some dissent reared its head was following some of the dreaded VAR decisions.

I voiced my strong concerns in one of last season’s programme articles that VAR is wrong and should be eliminated from the games that they are used in. Football, in my opinion, has been totally ruined by the introduction of VAR.

If I can give one major example of the VAR nonsense, it was in the USA/England semi-final when England were awarded a controversial penalty at a crucial stage in the game.

During an England attack, I think they were 2-1 down at the time, a ball was played into the box and a USA and England player went for the ball but both, in my view, missed the ball and ended up on the turf. The referee, who was reasonably placed to observe the incident, thought nothing wrong and correctly waved play on.

However, VAR then came into play!

After what seemed a really lengthy delay, fully six or seven minutes or so, the referee was ‘forced’ to give a penalty to England, which subsequently they missed.

The referee viewed the incident many, many times and still seemed unsure judging by her facial expressions but was then ‘forced’ to give a penalty because, VAR, in my opinion, is designed to ‘work’ and award penalties 100% of the time.

Scotland were also victims of a VAR penalty decision and then the ‘double whammy’ of the Scotland goalie (Alexander) who after making a great save was deemed to have moved and the penalty re-taken and scored.

Alan Brazil, ex Ipswich and Scotland star from many years ago, made an excellent comment in his weekly article in The Sunday Post regarding VAR a couple of weeks ago.

He said: ‘imagine a Celtic/Rangers cup final or a match to decide the league championship and in the very last minute, with the scores level, a controversial decision goes to VAR and after several minutes delay, one of teams is awarded a penalty kick and scores to win the game.

Can you imagine the mayhem that would ensue? The mind boggles!

On Scotland, yet again we, as a nation, managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Cruising at 3-0 up against what looked like a very poor Argentina side out on the their feet with 15 minutes to go, Scotland then

‘collapsed’ and ending up drawing the match 3-3 and missed out on qualification to the knock-out stages of the tournament. It was heart breaking for the girls.

Generally, Scotland acquitted themselves very well and if they had the ‘rub of the green’ against England and Argentina would have progressed. Don’t know what it is about Scotland, at any sport, it seems, we always seem to come up with a new way to lose, we are ‘masters’ at it.

One of the Scotland stars was centre forward Erin Cuthbert, what a buzz bomb she was! She’d certainly give Scott Barbour and Paul Campbell a run for their money!! Mark, get the cheque book out and sign that girl!

One of the few disappointing features of the World Cup was the ‘timewasting’ or ‘game management’ as it seems to be called these days, going on at the end of some of the games. It is very frustrating and in my opinion against the true spirit of the game. The commentators on TV seemed to think this was a great tactic but I’m not so sure.

Speaking of ‘time wasting’ or ‘game management, call it what you like, it can come unstuck on occasions. I was at the Peterhead/Stirling Albion game at Balmoor on the second last Saturday of the season. Peterhead needed a win to secure the title and promotion to the next tier.

However, with Peterhead 1-0 up and well into stoppage time (must been 6 or 7 minutes over time), Peterhead had the ball at the corner flag in their half of the field and just needed to ‘hold out’ a few more seconds to win the game.

Subsequently, they lost possession, Stirling broke up the other end of the pitch and scored to draw the game 1- 1 , Peterhead got their just desserts! They did, however, clinch the title the following week at Queen’s Park.

A brief comment about England at the World Cup, they were a very good side and certainly merited their top 4 finish. I was quite impressed how their manager, Phil Neville, handled himself before and after games. He was honest and spoke a lot of sense.

The one thing I didn’t like about England was the fact that the English media labelled the England team the Lionesses, that annoyed me! Yes, it’s true that England has 3 Lions on their badge but doesn’t Scotland have the Lion Rampant on their badge?! Surely, we were entitled to name our girls the Lionesses as well?!

To sum up, I was very impressed by the fitness, speed, skill and determination of the players, good show girls!! I wonder if the men’s game could turn out to be so attractive or maybe I’m dreaming……..!!Enjoy today’s game.

Match Programmes During the summer I have been compiling a list of Broch programmes from games where I know they were issued. I have managed to identify those games from more recent times where one exists but have lots of gaps going back further. If you have or know of any Broch supporters that might have programmes dating back to the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s please let me know so I can update my records. Also if you have any that you would be willing to sell I would like to hear from you. My email address is [email protected] Thank you
