Rockquest Polarised

A MASSIVE congratulations to Polarised who have made the NZ Top 20 bands for Rockquest. There were over 600 entries into Rockquest this year from all over NZ so to reach the top 20 is outstanding. 3 Southland Interschool Japanese Speech Competition

Students of Japanese participated in the Southland Interschool Japanese Speech Competition on August 11th. The Year 9 students performed a role play in pairs in Japanese. The Year 10-13 students presented between a 1 and 3 minute speech and then answered 2 questions in Japanese about it. Junior Campus Congratulations to the two James Hargest College teams that participated in the Otago Southland Intermediate Chess Tournament in Dunedin. James Hargest A (Liam Graham, Hector O’Rourke, Peter McIntyre and Hasnula Hawera Barbaranda) were placed 6th. James Hargest B (Ben Whelan, Thehas Perera, Pax Talbot and Cora O’Rourke) were placed 12th.

Enviro Group Update

There have been several activities going on throughout Terms 2-3. Firstly 80 students including the Enviro group, the Junior campus Enviro group, the Junior Te Reo Maori class, a PE class and several home schooling families helped plant 400 plants alongside the Waihopai River bank regeneration area. One day it is hoped that it will be a community native forest walk.

This week Bronwyn - the Otatara Native Plant nursery educator visited school to teach a small group of students at the senior campus how to grow native plants - Broad Leaf and Manuka from cuttings and from seed. The aim is to start doing this in the correct seasons so that the group can plant out their own trees along the Waihopai forest walk.

10 Innovation Projects Junior Campus Room 1

Room 1 students have been working on their Innovation projects for 8 weeks. Room 4 visited to learn about the innovations and give feedback. Projects ranged from a heated pillow to a moving rubbish bin. This was a challenging project as there were many problems to solve along the way and not everyone was able to complete their prototype. All part of learning about the design process!

I was incredibly proud of the regret is that this team of wonderful people could cast who worked so hard to get performance ready… not play to the size of audiences they deserved and have done it twice! Room 4 Junior Campus

Room 4 shared their Real World Problem Solving Innovations to the junior classes. They had so much positive feedback and the prototypes were amazing.

EiS Technology Challenge Junior Campus

We sent 2 teams of 4 to the EiS Technology Challenge in Waianiwa on the 12th of August to compete against other schools within Southland. One of our teams was placed 2nd overall. Congratulations to Brock Smith, Neve Templeton, Hasi Babaranda and Emma Steele for a fabulous effort.

13 Dance NZMade 2020

On Monday 27 July, a group of 13 James Hargest students took part in the Dance NZMade Workshops and Competition. The workshops consisted of three different genres - Musical Theatre, Jazz/Lyrical & Hip Hop. It was a great experience for dancers from our school to have and gave them a chance to have a go under some very experienced NZ dance teachers. Following the day workshops, Lucy Thomson, Ivy Turner and George Shirley both took part in the evening competition where they both performed original pieces in their Year group. George and Ivy came away as runners up in the Year 9 section, Netball which is outstanding. Congratulations to both of you for amazing performances. We are all excited about 2021 and we are looking forward to what Hargest can take to the competition next year.

14 Canoe Polo SISS Competition

James Hargest had a successful time at the South Island Secondary School Canoe Polo Competition with the Senior Girls team winning Gold. The team won all of their games with the final, which went to Golden point, being the most exciting of the competition. Well this Yellow Brick Road has taken the Junior Campus Production cast and crew on quite a journey this year! Our talented cast have performed 4 separate shows to

meet the audience demands (and the requirements of Level 2). They have practised nearly every Sunday this term and have sung, danced and acted their hearts out. We’ve loved every minute of our time in Oz and are so thankful to everyone who has helped us along the way!
