The Brunei Rebellion: December 1962 the Popular Uprising
The Brunei Rebellion: December 1962 The Popular Uprising Prepared by: Dato’ Haji Harun Bin Haji Abdul Majid MPhil. (King’s College, London) In any league tables of rebellions, the events that took place in Brunei between December 1962 and May 1963 are somewhere near the bottom of one of the lower divisions. The critical period of the Rebellion can be measured in days rather than weeks, the numbers involved were small, the scale of the activity was low-key, the effects on people’s lives and livelihoods were limited, and the effort needed to put down the Rebellion was not great. Things might to some extent have been different if the planning had been more efficient and if more support had been forthcoming from neighbouring Sarawak and North Borneo. But even so, it would still be a fairly minor sequence of events, in a region riven since 1945 by major wars, revolutions and rebellions If, however, we look at the consequences of the Rebellion, the perspective changes quite significantly. George McTurnan Kahin, one of the most eminent of American Asian scholars, put it rather dramatically in his memoir of fifty years of study of the region: “….. it was the rebellion that broke out on 8 December 1962 in the Sultanate of Brunei – slated at the time to be a component of the Malaysian federation – that precipitated the opposition of the Philippines and the Republic of Indonesia to it. Prior to the Brunei rebellion there was no clear indication that Indonesia or the Philippines would oppose Britain’s evolving plan for the creation of Malaysia, even if that federation incorporated the northern Borneo territories. -

Konfrontasi: 1963
BACKGROUND & MECHANICS GUIDE KONFRONTASI: 1963 2 BACKGROUND GUIDE WELCOME FROM THE DIAS Hello Delegates, My name is Yue Ting Kong, and welcome to the SSICsim 2019 JCC, Konfrontasi. Set during the Cold War in Southeast Asia, where Indonesia and the Commonwealth were in a quasi-war over the fate of the unification of Malaysia. In this committee you will encounter counter-insurgency tactics, guerrilla warfare and terrorism. However, you’ll also see the issues brought forth by the Race Riots that took place in Malaysia during its federation and the divide between communists and the non-aligned movements in Indonesia. This two-faced committee will explore an area of the world going through nationalism, decolonization and the Cold War, hoping to advance your nations by achieving a balance between political manoeuvring and military force. History has largely forgotten this conflict and its surrounding events which helped shape the world we live in today. This conflict led to the formation of the Association of Southeast Asian States (ASEAN), and fermented the independence of Malaysia in the international community. The Race Riots that occurred during the war led the independence of Singapore under Lee Kwan Yew and its evolution into a strong Asian Tiger. In Indonesia, it led to the collapse of an increasingly communist regime and the creation of a country who would become incredibly important to the non-aligned movement. A bit of background on myself, I’m a Second Year History Specialist at the University of Toronto and this will be my 7th year doing Model United Nations. Best of luck delegates and I look forward to meeting you all at the conference. -

The British debate about Maritime Air Power in the 1960s Gjert Lage Dyndal Doctor of Philosophy dissertation 2009 University of Glasgow Department for History Supervisors: Professor Evan Mawdsley and Dr. Simon Ball 2 Abstract Numerous studies, books, and articles have been written on Britains retreat from its former empire in the 1960s. Journalists wrote about it at the time, many people who were involved wrote about it in the immediate years that followed, and historians have tried to put it all together. The issues of foreign policy at the strategic level and the military operations that took place in this period have been especially well covered. However, the question of military strategic alternatives in this important era of British foreign policy has been less studied. -
University of Perpetual Help System-DALTA College of Law
University of Perpetual Help System-DALTA College of Law FOREWORD Philippines maintains a dormant claim over the sovereignty of eastern Sabah based on the claim that in 1658 the Sultan of Brunei had ceded the northeast portion of Borneo to the Sultan of Sulu; and that later in 1878, an agreement was signed by the Sultan of Sulu granting the North Borneo Chartered Company a permanent lease over the territory. Malaysia considered this dispute as a "non-issue", as there is no desire from the actual people of Sabah to be part of the Philippines or of the Sultanate of Sulu. As reported by the Secretary- General of the United Nations, the independence of North Borneo was brought about as the result of the expressed wish of the majority of the people of the territory in a 1963 election. This research will determine whether or not Philippines have proprietary rights over Sabah. Jennylyn B. Albano UPHSD- College of Law 1 | P a g e INTRODUCTION This research will focus on the History of Sabah and determination of whether who really owns it. As we all know even before our ancestors are already fighting for our right over this state however, up until now dispute is still on going. Sabah is one of the 13 member states of Malaysia, and is its easternmost state. It is located on the northern portion of the island of Borneo. It is the second largest state in the country after Sarawak, which it borders on its southwest. It also shares a border with the province of East Kalimantan of Indonesia in the south. -
Nuclear Illusion, Nuclear Reality Nuclear Weapons and International Security Since 1945
Nuclear Illusion, Nuclear Reality Nuclear Weapons and International Security since 1945 Series Editor: Professor John Simpson, Mountbatten Centre for International Studies, University of Southampton, UK During the second half of the last century, the practical aspects of national nuclear weapon policies remained shrouded in state secrecy laws. This was an area where political and technical issues were intertwined, and understanding required knowledge and expertise of both. Archival material was sparse and most writings on the subject were based on information provided to well-placed journalists and confidential interviews with some of those involved. The result was that for the academic analyst, separating truth from fiction was a very difficult task, especially in the case of the United Kingdom. With the end of the Cold War, archival material became available from all of the five declared nuclear-weapon states on their activities and scholars were able to discuss the previous century’s nuclear reality. A small community of scholars and former practitioners in the UK therefore started to rethink this history by producing a new series of volumes on the evolution of the United Kingdom’s nuclear weapon policies from 1952 onwards, the date of the explosion of its first nuclear device. Thanks to a grant from the UK Arts and Humanities Research Board to the Mountbatten Centre for International Studies at the University of Southampton, Professor John Simpson and his colleagues were able to start a systematic study of the post-1952 period, and to engage with those directly involved in its many aspects. What soon became clear was that in the period 1958–64 the course was set for UK nuclear policy in the next half-century. -
The Thor Irbms and the Cuban Missile Crisis by Stephen Twigge
The Other Other Missiles of October: The Thor IRBMs and the Cuban ... http://www.history.ac.uk/resources/e-journal-international-history/twig... Home » Publications » Electronic Journal of International History Electronic Journal of International History - Article 3 ISSN 1471-1443 Introduction | Contents The Other Other Missiles of October: The Thor IRBMs and the Cuban Missile Crisis by Stephen Twigge (University College London) and Len Scott (University of Wales, Aberystwyth) Abstract The Cuban missile crisis of 1962 occurred when the USSR deployed nuclear missiles in Cuba, within range of the USA. Yet by 1962 the US had deployed Thor missiles in the UK and Jupiter missiles in Italy and Turkey, within range of the USSR. The story of British-American negotiations to deploy Thor has already been told, as has the story of the Jupiter deployment in Turkey and Italy. This article tells the story of the Thor deployment, in particular in the context of the Cuban crisis. During the crisis the operational condition of both the Soviet missiles in Cuba and the Jupiter missiles were major concerns of the US government. The article demonstrates the very high state of Thor missile readiness, and clarifies several controversies concerning the operational readiness of Bomber Command in October 1962. It then shows that despite their military importance, and potential diplomatic value, the Thors were of nugatory political significance. 1. In October 1962, the discovery of Soviet Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) and Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) bases in Cuba took the world to the brink of nuclear war. The clandestine deployment of Soviet nuclear missiles capable of striking military and urban-industrial targets in the United States with little or no warning presented the United States with a military and political challenge which, it decided, could not be tolerated. -
President Macapagal and the Maphilindo
THE DREAM OF MALAYAN UNITY: PRESIDENT MACAPAGAL AND THE MAPHILINDO Augusto V. de Viana University of Santo Tomas Manila, Philippines Abstract In July 1962, a proposal to form a greater Malayan Confederation was proposed by President Diosdado Macapagal. This proposal was to include the Philippines, the Federation of Malaya and the British territories of Singapore, Brunei, Sarawak and North Borneo. The proposal would have been a realization of a Malaya Irredenta which was dreamed of by visionaries like Wenceslao Vinzons who once made an oration advocating for the unity of Malayan people working toward a common destiny. The opportunity came near as colonial powers were liquidating their possessions in post-World War II Asia, Already an earlier association, the Association of Southeast Asia was formed in 1961 and this association included non-Malay countries. The Malayan confederation which would be called MAPHILINDO was to be different. On August 5, President Macapagal issued his declaration calling for the creation of MAPHILINDO. The formation of the MAPHILINDO was met with jubilation as it was the realization of a centuries-old vision and the culmination of the anti-colonial struggle. The organization however floundered because of significant problems among the three countries. It led into a diplomatic crisis that had the possibility of widespread armed conflict. MAPHILINDO floundered and was later superseded by the present Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Despite its stillbirth the formation of the MAPHILINDO demonstrated fraternal relations in dealing with problems and issues among the three states of Malay origin. Key words: Malay union, Confederation, Sabah Claim, Konfrontasi The dream of a united Malayan homeland traces its origin to the colonial era. -
