Signed:________________ Name:____________________ Date:_______________ The southern African pheasant shell species. i GENERAL ABSTRACT The taxonomy and biogeography of the southern African pheasant shell fauna are poorly known. Thirty–one nominal taxa referable to Phasianelloidea have been described or recorded in this region, but no systematic revision of these has ever been undertaken. Morphological evidence suggests that 16 taxa represent valid species, 13 are synonyms and two represent incorrect identifications. DNA sequence data from mitochondrial COI and 16S markers are used to assess the validity of the described nominal southern African Tricolia species. Phylogenetic analyses recovered seven distinct clades. Tricolia adusta, T. elongata, T. formosa, T. kochii, T. saxatilis and T. neritina were recovered as distinct species. Tricolia africana and T. capensis are genetically indistinguishable. However, morphological characters of the shell are clearly diagnosable. This could be due to incomplete sorting (ancestral polymorphism) reflecting recent speciation with rapid morphological and ecological divergence co–incident with geographical separation. Similarly, there is little genetic differentiation between T. bicarinata, T. insignis and T. kraussi. In this case the similarity is also supported by morphological data as the three species are conchologically close with intergrading shell characters, and might even be one species exhibiting ecogeographic variation in shell form. -

Numerous important studies on seaweed communities including these phytal animals have been so far carried out mainly in European seas from various biological view-points by many authors (Colman, 1940; Dahl, 1948; Wieser, 1952; Chapman, 1955; Ohm, 1964; Hagerman, 1966; Nagle, 1968; and other authors). On the other hand, in Japan, seaweed communities were studied mainly in the Zostera and the Sargassum regions by Kitamori and Kobayashi (1958), Kitamori et al. (1959), Kikuchi (1961, 1962 and 1966), Fuse (1962a and b), Harada (1962) and others mainly from the view-point of fishery resources, especially for the relation between fishes and phytal animals as their food organisms. In these studies, however, most meio- or microorganisms, such as harpacticoids, nematodes, etc., were omitted or disregarded despite of their predominant existence in these communities. Therefore, Mukai (1971) recently made a quantitative investigation of phytal animals including meiofauna in the Sargassum region in the Inland Sea of Japan and described their seasonal fluctuations of abundance. -

Composition, size and relative density of diatoms in the stomach of 4, 7, 10, 13, 17, 21, 27, 35, 50 and 75 day-old tokobushi were evaluated to characterize their diatom intake. Stomach in glycol methacrylate resin was sectioned and examined under the light microscope, then analyzed using an image processing software. The diatoms present in the stomach of tokobushi were Thalassiosira , Melosira , Triceratium , Odontella , Asterionella , Licmophora , Thalassionema , Cocconeis , Navicula and Nitzschia . Only four varieties of diatoms were observed in 4 to 10 day-old tokobushi which coincided with initial feeding. The number and size of diatoms increased in 13 to 75 day-old juvenile, which were exhibited in its exponential growth pattern. -

New data on intertidal biota of Russky (Sea of Japan), Kunashir (Kurile Isl.) and Jeju Islands (Korea) were obtained, and recent changes in the species composition and abundance are described. In total, 2211 species of marine biota are known for China. Data on the ship fouling in the Russian sector of the Sea of Japan collected since 1975 are reviewed and sum- marized, and altogether 16 species-invaders of bottom invertebrates (cirripede bar- nacles, amphipods, hydroids, polychaetes and bryozoans) have been registered. -

In the rocky and bouldery intertidal zones, communities dominated by barnacle Chthamalus dalli and a gastropod species Littorina sitkana with the poor species composition of the macrobenthos are typical for the upper intertidal subzone. The middle intertidal subzone is occupied by fucoid assemblages. The dense beds of laminarian algae dominate in the lower intertidal subzone with the total macrobenthic biomass up to 100 kg wet wt m−2. On wave-exposed sandy beaches formed by clean sand, populations of the macrobenthic organisms are very poor, and macrophytes and the other attached forms are absent. The communities dominated by eelgrass Zostera japonica and a gastropod species Batillaria cumingii are found only in the sandy intertidal zones of the southern coast of Kunashir Island, in Izmeny Bay.
