INTRODUCTION In the Mediterranean Sea the genus Cantrainea Jeffreys, 1883, is represented only by Cantraineapeloritana (Cantraine, 1835), which was definitely confirmed to be a living species about a decade ago by Babbi (1982). The author in his interesting report com- ments on the taxonomic position of C. peloritana, giving data on some of its synonyms and reasonably guessing that this species could belong to the deep-sea coral bio- coenosis (Peres & Picard, 1964) present in the MediterraneanSea. According to Babbi (1982), C. peloritana, based on conchological characters only, shows two distinct morphs which in turn represent the two nominal species Turbo peloritanus (typical form) and Turbo carinatus (carinate form) originally created by Cantraine (1835) for fossil specimens. These two shell forms are both present in the Atlantic Ocean; on the con- trary, only the carinate form occurs in the Mediterranean Sea. Living specimens of C. peloritana from the Mediterranean Sea have been reported rarely, the first time by Jeffreys (1882), who published a small note about some molluscs dredged between Sar- dinia and Naples at a depth of 307 m, during the scientific expedition carried out by the V. -

Population energy budgets estimated on the assumption of steady state conditions for C. testudinaria (Linnaeus, 1758) on the rocky shore of Ohoiwait, are presented. Large difference in population structure, and hence energetics, occurred at different localities along the rocky shore. Relatively high proportions (98 %) of the assimilated energy was lost via metabolism. Assimilation efficiency is 39 %, net growth efficiency is 1.8 %, and ecological efficiency 0.3 %. Production (P), energy flow (A) and total energy consumption (C) were expressed as functions of animal size, in order to facilitate gross estimations of the energy component for which data on size frequency and density are available. Aceptado el 23-IV-2008 ABSTRACT Shell morphology and characters of the living animal of the poorly known, Atlantic Moroc- can species Anadema macandrewii (Mörch, 1864) are described and illustrated, based on beach collected specimens and a single live-collected specimen. The genus is mono- typic and is assigned to the Colloniidae rather than Turbinidae because of the dome- shaped profile of the shell, open umbilicus, symmetrical tooth rows of the radula, lack of cephalic lappets, and the non-bicarinate juvenile shell. Within the Colloniidae, it unusual for its relatively large mature shell, juvenile shell with a keeled profile, and the lack of the secondary flap above the rachidian tooth. The species is regarded as sexually dimorphic, with the female shell having a raised periumbilical rim comparable to that of other tro- choideans modified for brooding by means of an enlarged umbilical cavity. RESUMEN Se describe e ilustra la morfología de la concha y del animal vivo de Anadema macan- drewii (Mörch, 1864), una especie poco conocida de la costa atlántica de Marruecos. El género es monotípico y se asigna a la familia Colloniidae, en lugar de a los Turbinidae por la forma abombada de la concha, el ombligo abierto, las filas de dientes radulares simétricas, la ausencia de lóbulos cefálicos y por su concha juvenil no bicarenada. -

Poppe INTRODUCTION The publication of Philippine Marine Mollusks, Volumes 1 to 4 has been a revelation to the conchological community. Apart from being the delight of collectors, the PMM started a new way of layout and publishing - followed today by many authors. Internet technology has allowed more than 50 experts worldwide to work on the collection that forms the base of the 4 PMM books. This expertise, together with modern means of identification has allowed a quality in determinations which is unique in books covering a geographical area. Our Volume 1 was published only 9 years ago: in 2008. Since that time “a lot” has changed. Finally, after almost two decades, the digital world has been embraced by the scientific community, and a new generation of young scientists appeared, well acquainted with text processors, internet communication and digital photographic skills. Museums all over the planet start putting the holotypes online – a still ongoing process – which saves taxonomists from huge confusion and “guessing” about how animals look like. Initiatives as Biodiversity Heritage Library made accessible huge libraries to many thousands of biologists who, without that, were not able to publish properly. The process of all these technological revolutions is ongoing and improves taxonomy and nomenclature in a way which is unprecedented. All this caused an acceleration in the nomenclatural field: both in quantity and in quality of expertise and fieldwork. The above changes are not without huge problematics. Many studies are carried out on the wide diversity of these problems and even books are written on the subject. -

ABSTRACT Marine endolithic and wood-boring bivalve mollusks living in rocks, corals, wood, and shells were surveyed on the Caribbean coast of Venezuela at Isla Margarita between 2004 and 2008. These surveys were supplemented with boring mollusk data from malacological collections in Venezuelan museums. A total of 571 individuals, corresponding to 3 orders, 4 families, 15 genera, and 20 species were identified and analyzed. The species with the widest distribution were: Leiosolenus aristatus which was found in 14 of the 24 localities, followed by Leiosolenus bisulcatus and Choristodon robustus, found in eight and six localities, respectively. The remaining species had low densities in the region, being collected in only one to four of the localities sampled. The total number of species reported here represents 68% of the boring mollusks that have been documented in Venezuelan coastal waters. This study represents the first work focused exclusively on the examination of the cryptofaunal mollusks of Isla Margarita, Venezuela. The mariculture industry in China has obtained break through in the all artificial nursery and cultural technique of shrimps, mollusca and fishes of high commercial value since 1950s, which has advanced the development of mariculture industry. The first major development was seaweed culture during 1950s, prompted by breakthroughs in breeding technology. By the end of the 1970s, annual seaweed production reached 250,000 metric tons in dry weight ( approximately 1.5million tons of fresh seaweed ). Shrimp culture developed during the 1980s because of advances in hatchery technology and economic reform policies. Annual shrimp production reached 210,000 tons in 1992. Disease outbreaks since 1993, however, have reduced shrimp production by about two-thirds. Mariculture production increased steadily between 1954 and 1985, but has been exponential since 1986, mostly driven by molluscan culture. Molluscan 1 culture in China began to expand beyond the four traditional species: oyster,cockle,razor clam and ruditapes clam in the 1970s,Mussel culture was the first new industry to emerge ,followed by scallop aquaculture in 1980s. Abalone culture has become a major industry in 1990s. Traditional oyster and clam cultures have also advanced and expanded in recent years.Now more than 30 species of marine mollusks are cultured commercially in China. Because of the rapid development in recent years, molluscan culture has become the largest sector of the Chinese mariculture industry, accounting for 81% of the total production in weight. -
