The research presented begins the construction of a DNA barcode reference library for this phylum, presenting records for nearly 25% of the Canadian fauna. This work confirms that the COI gene region is an effective tool for delineating species of marine molluscs and for revealing overlooked species. This study also discovered a link between GC content and sequence divergence between congeneric species. I also provide a detailed analysis of population structure in two bivalves with similar larval development and dispersal potential, exploring how Canada’s extensive glacial history has shaped genetic structure. Both bivalve species show evidence for cryptic taxa and particularly high genetic diversity in populations from the northeast Pacific. These results have implications for the utility of DNA barcoding both for documenting biodiversity and broadening our understanding of biogeographic patterns in Holarctic species. E-mail: [email protected] 2, 3 Pacific Northwest Shell Club SUMMARY The intertidal Japanese snail, Hima fratercula (Dunker, 1860), was most likely introduced to Washington and B.C. from Japan along with Pacific oyster seed, Crassostrea gigas, over the period from the 1920’s to 1960’s. Previously, it has only been reported from isolated sites in Washington and at Boundary Bay, B.C. Both the native Western lean nassa, H.mendica and the non-native Japanese nassa, H. fratercula were found at numerous sites at the head of Ladysmith Harbour, B.C. over the period April to October, 2014. Bubble-shaped or bulliform egg capsules of H. fratercula, with 4 to 7 eggs per capsule, were found in May and June, 2014 at Ladysmith. H. fratercula were common and abundant in the mud under rocks, shells and wood debris. The limited distribution of the non-native species, H. fratercula at isolated sites may be attributed to a limited dispersal of crawl-away larvae. In contrast, the widely distributed native species, H. mendica has 28 to 33 embryos per capsule and planktonic larvae. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was a clear, sunny spring day in April, 2014. MacGinitie in the vicinity of Point Barrow, Alaska. His work on the invertebrates of the region (see G. E. MacGinitie, 1955j was spon- sored by contracts (N6-0NR 243-16) between the OfRce of Naval Research and the California Institute of Technology (1948) and The Johns Hopkins L^niversity (1949-1950). The writer, who served as research associate under this project, spent the. periods from July 10 to Oct. 10, 1948, and from June 1949 to August 1950 at the Arctic Research Laboratory, which is located at Point Barrow base at ap- proximately long. 156°41' W. and lat. 71°20' N. As the northernmost point in Alaska, and representing as it does a point about midway between the waters of northwest Greenland and the Kara Sea, where collections of polar fauna have been made. Point Barrow should be of particular interest to students of Arctic forms. The effects of commercial bottom trawling for yellowfin sole Limanda aspera on benthic communities were investigated in a sandy habitat exposed to high wave and tidal disturbance at 20–30 m depth in the southeastern Bering Sea. We compared an area that has been closed to commercial trawling for 10 years with an adjacent area that is now open to commercial trawling. In addition, we examined the immediate effects of experimental trawling on benthic community structure in the area closed to trawling. The fished area was characterized by reduced macrofauna density, biomass, and richness relative to the closed (unfished) area, but diversity was not different. Interannual variability of macrofauna assemblages was high in the system, yet assemblages in the two areas were distinguished using multivariate analyses and dominant taxa. After 10 years, sessile taxa (e.g., Maldanidae polychaetes) were prevalent in the closed area, and mobile scavengers (e.g., Lysianassidae amphipods) were more common in the fished area. Immediate responses of macrofauna to experimental trawling were subtle (i.e., reduced richness, absence of rare taxa, and patchy changes in assemblage biomass), but no differences were detected relative to controls for density, diversity, or total biomass. -
