DEMOS’ 2012 PARTY CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

Demos at 2012 Party Conferences

ABOUT DEMOS Demos is a think-tank focused on power and politics. Our unique approach challenges the traditional, 'ivory tower' model of policymaking by giving a voice to people and communities. We work together with the groups and individuals who are the focus of our research, including them in citizens’ juries, deliberative workshops, focus groups and ethnographic research.

Through our high quality and socially responsible research, Demos has established itself as the leading independent think tank in British politics. Our work is driven by the goal of a society populated by free, capable, secure and powerful citizens.

DEMOS’ PROGRAMME AT PARTY CONFERENCES As the think-tank leading the progressive agenda in the UK, Demos has a reputation for delivering an incisive and broad-ranging programme of events across the three main party conferences.

Our 2011 programme was the largest and most impactful programme of any single organisation, constituting fifty events across the three conferences. With fresh formats and the most interesting speakers, we deliver intellectually stimulating events that are attended by key stakeholders and are relevant to contemporary policy debates.

Our programme of fringe events at the 2011 Party Conferences was among the most comprehensive and successful of the season (see below for our full 2011 listings). Highlights included:

Flagship events Demos also hosts a number of flagship events at each party conference, including:

• The Demos Grill: At each Conference, the Demos Grill pits senior politicians against leading intellectuals on key elements of each Party’s policy agenda. These events are some of our most successful. In 2011, they featured Chuka Umunna MP and Channel 4 News’ Krishnan Guru-Murthy; Danny Alexander MP and ’ Philip Collins; and Tim Loughton MP and the New Statesman’s Rafael Behr

• Demos Receptions: Our popular drinks receptions bring together our partners, speakers and friends with leading figures in the UK political and media world. We are joined at these events by senior politicians: MP joined us at our 2011 Conservative Party Conference Champagne Reception, and MP spoke at our Labour Conference Reception.

WHY DEMOS

Thought leadership Our conference events seek to address the issues that are important to our research, our partners’ interests and society in general. What sets us apart is our ability to combine political networks and policy expertise to create events that deliver our unique perspective on contemporary political issues. All of our party conference events are grounded in research and credible, evidence-based analysis of crucial political and policy issues.

Collaboration To achieve maximum impact from party conference events, we work closely with partners to co-design innovative fringe events and roundtables. We work with our partners to develop themes and conversations that link their policy agenda to contemporary political issues.

Media Our reputation for cutting-edge research means has created strong relationships and networks within the media. These ensure that our events always attract wide press coverage and significant visibility. To guarantee this, we support all our events with extensive media work and listings in advance of events.

Networks We are proud that our high-profile networks generate ideas and contribute to progressive debate. We identify and attract the key thinkers and actors of the moment, including rising stars on the backbenches and key advisors.

It was great doing fringes together with you again this year. You always put 101% into your work - and it really shows in the results.

Alison Marshall, UNICEF UK, 2010 and 2011 partner

Cross-party influence Demos is ideally positioned to create conference events with genuine cross-party appeal. We regularly work with partners to host events across all three Party Conferences. The independence of Demos research is mirrored in our events that cut across party political lines, as our key research themes are strongly focused on issues germane to all three Parties.

• Demos’ Progressive Conservatism Project looks at how progressive ends can be achieved using conservative means. The project is chaired by David Willetts MP, Minister of State for Universities and Science and the advisory board includes Greg Clark MP and Zac Goldsmith MP. We are proud to have hosted a number of keynote speeches by senior Conservative MPs including George Osborne and , who also provided the foreword to the publication Recapitalising the Poor and called for people to ‘sit up and listen’ to evidence from Demos highlighting the importance of Building Character.

Nick Clegg
