Program Description Program description An Adventurous Ride in Oberwiesenthal – 5 Days Suitable for Grades 6-13 Welcome to Oberwiesenthal, the highest-lying town in Germany. The k1 sporthotel is your base for an experience-rich class outing to the Fichtelberg in the Ore Mountains. The k1 sporthotel lies at the foot of the Fichtelberg Mountain and offers spacious rooms with bathroom and television. Their in-house facilities include table-tennis, foosball, a party- and a seminar room, everything that is needed for a class trip of a different type. A volleyball and football field are within 10 minutes walking distance. We will keep boredom at bay with our activities, ranging from Monsterrollern, to archery and the trendy sport Wave boarding. The focus in this package is on nature experiences in the Ore Mountains and the pleasure and enjoyment of exercise, which will uplift the team spirit and togetherness of the class. The countryside in the Czech-German-Polish Triangle at the begin- ning of the 1990s was seriously damaged by a high concentration of mining and industry sites (dumps, mine shafts, extensive erosion from surface mining) as well as suffering from one of the highest emission densities in Europe. The con- sequences for nature were se-vere (forest damages, water contamination etc.). In view of these problems, cross-border development concepts were drawn up, helping to signifi cantly improve the environ-mental situation. The IOER is cur- rently evaluating the development of the environ-mental situation from 1990 to 2006, looking at such issues as landscape and nature pro-tection and the effects of the cross-border collaboration. Some results are presented in this article.     DEUQUA excursions Edited by Daniela Sauer From the northern ice shield to the Alpine glaciations A Quaternary field trip through Germany GEOZON From the northern ice shield to the Alpine glaciations Preface Daniela Sauer The 10-day field trip described in this excursion guide was organized by a group of members of DEUQUA (Deutsche Quartärvereinigung = German Quaternary Union), coordinated by DEUQUA president Margot Böse. The tour was offered as a pre-congress field trip of the INQUA Congress in Bern, Switzerland, 21– 27 July 2011. Finally, the excursion got cancelled because not enough participants had registered. Apparently, many people were interested in the excursion but did not book it because of the high costs related to the 10-day trip. Because of the general interest, we decided nevertheless to finish the excursion guide. The route of the field trip follows a section through Germany from North to South, from the area of the Northern gla- ciation, to the Alpine glacial advances. It includes several places of historical importance, where milestones in Quaternary research have been achieved in the past, as well as new interesting sites where results of recent research is presented. The field trip starts at Greifswald in the very North-East of Germany. The first day is devoted to the Pleistocene and Ho- locene Evolution of coastal NE Germany. The Baltic coast with its characteristic cliffs provides excellent exposures showing the Late Pleistocene and Holocene stratigraphy and glaciotectonics. The most spectacular cliffs that are located on the island of Rügen, the largest island of Germany (926 km2) are shown.

    a n d Old Mountain Meteorological SpofL e k Station Milesovka (Donnersberg) in Central Europe Abstract The foundation of the old mountain meteorological station Milesovka (Donnersberg) in western Bohemia and its operation since 1904 is described with special reference to its unique location in central Europe. The data presented might serve as important documentation of the intense industrialization of the surrounding region during the past 80 years. Milesovka (Donnersberg)—837 m above mean sea level (MSL) 50°33'N, 14°56'E—belongs to the family of old mountain meteorological stations in central Europe that played an important role in characterizing the climate trends for almost a century. Among the oldest of those stations are Snezka (Schneekoppe), at 1603 m MSL (operating since 1881), Fichtelberg, at FIG. 1.
