Art in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf has developed into an important centre for in recent years, with both estab- lished museums and countless new ones being characteristic features of the city on the Rhine today. The world-famous Kunstakademie (art academy) acts as the central core for Düsseldorf’s highly contrasting art landscape. Internationally renowned artists either teach or were taught in its halls. Countless represen tatives of the younger generation of artists, who are now recognised names in the context of international exhibitions, had their beginnings in Düsseldorf. And Düsseldorf gallery owners also enjoy the highest reputations internationally; their galleries are the forums of the lively local art scene.

The exhibition is dedicated to the motifs of “veil” and “curtain” and thus also to fundamental questions around painting and visual art: What do we get to see in the picture? What does it conceal? The appealing and artistically vir- tuoso interplay between showing and hiding, concealing and revealing, is exemplified in the high-calibre loans from international museums – from Titian to Rubens to Gerhard Richter, and with paintings ranging from the Renaissance and to modernism and the present day.

Otto Dix (1891–1969) spent the ex- plosively creative years 1922–1925 in Düsseldorf. During this period, as a member of the revolutionary art- ist’s group “Das Junge Rheinland (Young Rhineland)”, he developed the critical handwriting that made him an unmistakable figure within 20th century German art. For the first time, Kunstsammlung Nord- rhein-Westfalen presents with “Otto Dix – The Evil Eye“ at K20 a monographic exhibition that focus- es on these crucial years in Dix’s development.

As if stepping through Alice’s looking glass, the visitor enters a panopticon with observation technology that creates an asso- ciative assemblage of allegedly historic pictures and apparatus.
